Be sure to bring your checkbook to Sundance on Sunday. Because director Kevin Smith is publicly auctioning off the rights to his religious horror film, Red State, according to Variety.
Smith has been talking about this for months, and it seems he’s serious. The film’s producer, Jonathan Gordon, told the trade that a deal will be made for the $4 million film before they leave the theater.

I like the confidence but this has the potential to backfire in embarrassing fashion for him. Hoping it’s good though!
Though Smith likes to over-promote his works on the Smodcast Network, I’ll admit that Red State sounds interesting. Smith sounds genuinely excited about this film and proud of what he’s been able to accomplish with a limited budget.
It’s an embarrassment for anyone involved in a church to have the small bunch of hateful fanatics from WBC be described as a “church group.” Please call them what they are, hate-mongers, and don’t loop them in the with majority of church/synagogue/temple attending believers.
Sounds interesting. Kevin Smith should win a prize for best marketing.
Clever marketing, indeed, but Smith’s films have a limited audience who’ll be there for him regardless. He doesn’t have such a terrific box-office record, so I hardly sense a hit in the making.
Smith’s limited audience grabs him around $30 million per flick (he’s never lost money) and millions more in the home video market. On a $4 million dollar effort that he’s trying to sell for under $8 million that’s still a pretty healthy profit.
Actually, he lost money on Mallrats. Apart from that, he’s done fine. I just hope this is better than Cop Out.
