Oscar nominations: What will be tomorrow's biggest surprise?

Tags:

Hailee-SteinfeldImage Credit: Wilson WebbWe’re now mere hours away from the Academy Award nominations. You can check me out tomorrow morning on Oscar.com at 8:30 am Eastern/5:30 am Pacific where I’ll react live to the announcement with Road to the Oscars host Chris Harrison (I have many Bachelor questions for him). Until then, let’s guess what tomorrow’s biggest surprises might be. Here are some unexpected outcomes that may have us all talking. These are not necessarily predictions, just things that could happen.

1. The Academy nominates True Grit‘s Hailee Steinfeld in the Best Actress category despite her supporting campaign.
2. Blue Valentine earns surprise nods for Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams (a man can dream!).
3. Biutiful‘s Javier Bardem knocks out Get Low‘s Robert Duvall for the fifth Best Actor slot.
4. Winter’s Bone costar John Hawkes bumps out The Social Network‘s Andrew Garfield in Best Supporting Actor.
5. Another Year‘s Lesley Manville scores a surprise nomination…for Best Supporting Actress.
6. The Coen brothers snag a Best Director slot over DGA nominee David O. Russell.
7. A movie outside the Broadcast Critics, Producers Guild, and AFI lists — possibly Another Year or Shutter Island — lands a Best Picture nomination.
8. Both Mila Kunis and Barbara Hershey score supporting actress nods for Black Swan.
9. Julianne Moore joins her Kids Are All Right costar in the Best Actress race.
and…
10. Black Swan ties The King’s Speech for the most nominations with 11.

Which surprise are you most hoping to hear tomorrow morning?

Hoping for Blue Valentine – please!

    • whatever

Lot of love for Blue Valentine please then I’ll weep. That’s all I cared for Williams and Gosling.

    • LOL

Hailee Steinfeld in the Best Actress category. It’s where she belongs.

      • Alex

        Won’t happen tho.

      • Brian

        I totally agree with that.

      • lalaland

it could happen tho…keisha castle-hughes got nominated for Whale Rider when she was only 13

      • Tye-Grr

        I think this will happen.

      • Karen Babyak

        Agreed and would be great!

    • bambam

marion cotillard, supporting actress, inception — that would be a heck of a surprise, even bigger surprise than the studio not running a campaign for her — she would have been a shoo-in for a nom had she been promoted. that would have possibly pushed inception’s oscar chances higher in other categories.

      • jgl is love

joseph gordon-levitt as best supporting actor. <3

      • Really?

The biggest surprise being that anyone from Inception could get a nom. None of them put in career best performances.

      • Japanese Japanese HIROSHI

I enjoy so much watching Inception – even on DVD for the first time (unfortunately). Just to amuse myself and other Inception fans, it would be great if INCEPTION (as Best Picture) would get the golden guy! : ) As for Mademoiselle (Madame) Cotillard, IMO, the only scene that she was allowed to shine in re Oscar-friendly “dramatic” performances is the one in which (***SPOLIER[?] ALERT***) Cobb has met his own projection of Mal for the last time and she is trying to convince him to stay for good in limbo with her (and their children). Simply put, I think her chance is slim.

      • Japanese Japanese HIROSHI

(Cont.) But I think Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s character in INCEPTION) somehow stood out more or less (not in a “showy” way). Wouldn’t mind a big(?) surprise if he got nominated, though.

  • MARCIA Cholodenko

“ANOTHER YEAR” – LESLIE MANVILLE — YOU’VE GOT
TO BE KIDDING. THE MOVIE WAS THE BIGGGGGEST BORE EVER!!!

    • DJ

I’m sure it was boring to people with subpar intelligence like you.

      • craig

        good call dj

      • RT

Movies like “Another Year” are, sadly, lost on people who are unaware that life involves people having actual conversations instead of car chases and explosions.

      • Verona

Right… Because ad hominem arguments are a much greater display of intelligence.

      • Ethan

Also, no movie is really a measure of a person’s intelligence, particularly a Mike Leigh movie, many of which are brilliant, and many of which are REALLY BORING. I haven’t seen Another Year, and really want to, but there’s no doubt there are passages in all of his movies that are excrutiatingly long and hard to sit through. And even if that wasn’t the case, smart people sometimes get bored at movies too.

      • Adui

Thank you, Ethan. But to be fair, smart people usually don’t write their comments in all caps.

      • JB

Not if the conversation is boring as watching paint dry!

    • Japanese Japanese HIROSHI

      Good one, Verona & Ethan. : )
Anyway, Marcia, in case you don’t know (just as I didn’t, when I first started blogging, etc.), writing in all caps is equal to “SHOUTING”.

  • Amanda

Just saw Blue Valentine and really hope Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams are nominated. They were terrific.

    • BluerValentine

Sure does Mr. Karger think so

  • anahera

That “THIS WAY OF LIFE” has been nominated in the doco category

  • poop

REALLY hoping the last one does NOT happen.

  • 4k4k

Noomi Rapace for Best Actress nomination…..can only hope.

    • samantha

Agree! I would personally nominate her over Hailee from True Grit..but alas Noomi was from a foreign language film and that gets little notice

    • anonymous

Agreed. A nomination for Noomi Rapace would make me very happy indeed.

  • del taco

    I have psychic powers
Hailee Steinfeld will be nominated for best actress.
biggest suprise nomination will be Ben Affleck best director for The Town

    • Meg

i will literally die of happiness if either/both of these things happen

      • stacy

Then I guess you won’t be watching the show…….

      • stacy

Oh please don’t do that Meg. Then the world would literally be short one more person who doesn’t understand the meaning of literally.

    • stella

ben affleck over the coen brothers or david o russell? pleaseeeeeeee. ben affleck is about to become overrated.

    • lalaland

LOL…i hope ur psychic powers come true…at least for Hailee

  • Crystal

Hoping Javier Bardem boots Duvall. Get Low is great, but…

I think Pete Postlethwaite or John Hawkes have the chance to bump someone but I sure as hell hope it’s not Andrew, who I think should *win*

    • Tye-Grr

I don’t know about winning, but I certainly hope he gets nominated. If he doesn’t, I’ll be pissed.

      • tori

I agree. I’ll be so upset if he doesn’t get nominated. His role was kind of tough if you really disect it. He and Eisenberg really had to harness themselves to give such controlled performances. Too bad Garfield won’t win though. No one’s beating Bale who gave such a huge performance. Still, I’d love if an understated role would win, like Garfield’s.

  • Sam C.

I’m betting The Town is totally ignored.

    • Karen Babyak

      Me too.

      • sydney

Jeremy Renner still seems a likely nom

  • j

Nominations for King’s Speech, Tangled and Social Network for best movie. Tangled > Toy Story 3

    • M

You’re DELUSIONAL if you think Tangled even compares to Toy Story 3.

      • j

I didn’t write compares. I stated it was greater (or better) of a movie than Toy Story 3. I didn’t have an equal sign under my inequality sign moron.

      • genie

        toy story 3 is overrated.

      • Mike

What? You could argue ALL of these movies are over rated.

I liked Tangled but Toy Story 3 was hands down better. Hell, even How to Train your Dragon.

      • dd

        Toy Story 3=overrated
How to Train your Dragon>Toy Story3

      • Mike

Agreed. Tangled and HTTYD >>> TS3. It’s been long accepted that if Pixar animated the taking of a sh*t, it’d still win this shot. Oh wait they already have. Cars 2

      • Beepela

Oh, when did you see Cars 2?

    • lalaland

tangled surpassed all expectation but i doubt it will even win best animated let alone get nominated for best picture…

  • ADL

#2 – I still think Michelle has a chance! But I guess its not looking good, I can only hope.

  • shdrew

The absolute best surprise for me would be if Noomi Rapace gets a Best Actress nomination for “The Girl Wit the Dragon Tattoo”.

    • thin

That really would be a surprise, considering it was released in 2009.

  • efrain

Halle Berry Frankie & Alice Best Actress!

    • Woot

      No

      • Karen Babyak

        Ditto – No.

  • justin

NO! Andrew Garfield has to be nominated. he should win too

    • Maho

Not going to happen…I predict Jesse Eisenburg will be the only acting nomination as for Garfield perhaps a presenter.

      • Jennifer

Which is horrible. Garfield was amazing. And that really was a star-making performance for him.

      • bruno

I’m with ya. why should garfield get a nom?? for what?! i think matt damon will get “his” spot, and i think duvall and bridges won’t be in the best actor race, replaced by bardem and dicaprio or gosling.

      • Bonnie

No offense, while I think The Social Network was excellent and the script superb, I can’t say that I thought that the acting was a stretch for any of the actors. However to say that it’s not a stretch is not to say that they are not outstanding, we’re not talking Matthew Perry type of non-stretch, but I just don’t think the actors were challenged in their roles.

      • Mike

        No offense taken.

But I think Eisenburg gave a really great performance. He was able to be a cold character while still being likeable. It was actually kind of a frightning performance, I thought.

    • axn

yes! andrew garfield must be nominated!! he deserves it. okay, I don’t think he’s going to win, but nominated, definately. I’ve never even heard of the guy that Dave says should bump him off. Why Andrew, Dave?!

      • Craig

Dave secretly has it in for The Social Network. He’s been ignoring the constant signs that it’s going to dominate the Oscars (the signs being numerous nominations and wins), because he has a hard on for The King’s Speech. The King Speech hadn’t won any major awards for Best Picture until the PGA, and now he thinks that it’s actually a race (compared to the dozens of Best Picture awards The Social Network has won). Now I loved The King’s Speech (and The Social Network), but sometimes you have to let your bias aside and actually SEE the race for what it is. Garfield will get nominated, Dave. Get over it.

      • Mike

I’m a little worried for Garfield as well. He didn’t make the cut for the SAG which lined up almost perfectly last year with the Oscars.

I hope he does get nominated but with 3 supporting actors trying to get in with the Social Network, it is possible they will cancle each other out.

But reall at the end of the day the only guranteed actors to be nomianted in that catagory are Bale and Rush. Any of the other actors I could see left out

      • Taylor

If John Hawkes is nominated, I hope it is at the expense of Renner or Ruffalo, and not Garfield. No one stands a chance against Christian Bale but I really do not think Renner or Ruffalo deserve noms.

      • Mac

Rush stands a chance against Bale. I shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone if he wins.

      • mark

if Karger has a hard on for ‘the Kings Speech’ then count me jealous of movie. Karger is so hot.

      • Really?

ew Mark. and I’m not referring to the magazine.

  • hope

I hope that John Malkovich and Mary Louis Parker get surprise nominations for Red!!!! They did great in that movie.

    • MCS

And Johnny Depp for The Tourist! He was so funny in that movie!

      • hope

^^That WASN’T me that wrote the Tourist comment. That person just happened to comment reply under my comment. I just want to make that clear.
