Mark Ruffalo reacts to his Oscar nod for 'The Kids are All Right'

Mark-Ruffalo-KidsImage Credit: Suzanne TennerMark Ruffalo was surprised by his Best Supporting Actor nomination for The Kids are All Right – but not for the reason you might expect. “I had no idea they were announcing today,” Ruffalo tells EW. “I swear! I was totally taken by surprise. I just dropped the kids off at carpool. I was about five minutes from the school with a car full of kids. With so many kids, I didn’t even realize it was today. I’m glad I forgot about it. It’s made it all the more — I don’t know, just sweet and poignant and unexpected, you know?”

Ruffalo’s also pleased to see that the Academy loved Kids as much as he did when he first read the script. “[This film] struck a nerve in me — and that’s pretty much all I had to go by,” he says. “I don’t necessarily have the best track record for picking movies that will strike the nerve in a big popular way. I know the movies that I love and I think are important. I love this movie and I thought it was important — and it had real cultural significance, which I was really happy to be part of.”

Despite his love for the film, Ruffalo didn’t so many moviegoers would fall for the film as well, especially considering its subject matter. (The film picked up $20 million at the box office.) “This movie has been embraced pretty widely — It’s kind of why I got into doing what I do — this kind of storytelling, these kind of issues being spoken about in a way that’s not polarizing, but uniting,” he says. “It’s unbelievable, man. This little movie, it’s so much further that I could have imagined or hoped for.”

I’m glad he got the nod. I’ve always been a big fan.

  • melanie

I think you are so hot Mark!

  • Riley

Mark Ruffalo does not deserve that fifth slot. Ryan Gosling was robbed.

    • Riley

      Andrew Garfield**

      Gosling was robbed though.

      • Jobless

Agreed, the robber was not Ruffalo though, he was always going to get a spot. John Hawkes stole Garfield’s spot.

I think it’s funny that he was taking the kids to school. It just shows what a down to earth kinda guy he is. Very cool.

    • Greg

My exact reaction. Made me love him even more.

  • Abe

I think his nod should have gone to Andrew Garfield.

Reitero, BUENcdSIMO EL MENSAJE, sfaper recomendableeeeeeee

Sorry. Call me cynical but I just do not believe that he didn’t know they were announced today. I just don’t buy it. His agent, manager, friends, anyone didn’t let him know?

  • Tiffany

I think the Academy finally realized they screwed him on ‘You Can Count On Me’. Fantastic in that movie. Also, he went from my hot list to my panty dropper list when he spoke about the director of TKAAR not getting the recongnition she deserves.

  • Dana

Mark totally deserved this he’s one of my favs

  • Mark’s name?

Silly question: Does his last name rhyme with buffalo? I’ve never known how to pronounce it.

  • alex

yep. buffalo. ruffalo buffalo potato chips.. would be yum.

i didn’t love the kids are all right but this article was so cute i’m glad he got nominated

  • ann

the social network is a good movie but the best movie of the year..?? NO, acting good but nothing extraordinary, is a movie about facebook come on! even David Fincher feels that even Zodiac deserve it more attention!

  • ann

and about Mark, he’s a wonderful underrated actor i’m glad he got this nomination, ryan gosling deserve to be in the leading role not supporting role nomination, so jesse eisenberg robbed him

    • zaviar wun

Actually, Javier Bardem robbed him. Eisenberg’s had his slot set since the National Board of Review win back in November.

  • Yolanda C Lewis

Ann,Jesse Eisenberg so deserved his nod. He was a revelation in The Social Network. Mark Ruffalo was excellent in TKAA, but I still wish Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake could have been nominated as well

  • Kriso

Mark Ruffalo finally gets the Academy love and it’s long overdue. He is always great! I just watched TKAAR a second time and found his performance both extremely moving and hilarious, a tricky thing to pull off.
