If the trailer for the new Judd Apatow-produced film Bridesmaids (embedded below) seems a fair shade bluer than your average female-centric comedy, well, that’s by design. “The whole goal of making this movie was to make a very funny, very honest movie about women in a way that they’re not normally made,” director Paul Feig (who created the beloved Freaks and Geeks) tells EW exclusively. “Both Judd and I feel women are very much underserved by modern comedy, because it’s all so guy-centric.” Saturday Night Live‘s Kristen Wiig — who also co-wrote the script — stars as the somewhat hapless maid of honor scrambling to help celebrate the wedding of her best friend (Maya Rudolph) while dealing with her four wildly disparate bridesmaids, played by Rose Byrne (Damages), Melissa McCarthy (Mike and Molly), Wendi McLendon-Covey (Reno 911!), and Ellie Kemper (The Office). Check out the trailer for the film — out May 13 — here:
As you can see, their banter can and does get rather ribald. “If you’ve ever overheard a group of women together, it’s not a tea party most of the time,” said Feig. “It was important for us to do that so when women come to see the movie, they would go, like, ‘Oh god, that’s just like my friends – maybe a funnier version of my friends.’” But Feig also cautions that the film isn’t a wall-to-wall raunch-fest. “It’s a hard movie to sum up in a trailer because it’s also very emotionally honest,” he says. “There’s tons of comedy but there’s also very relatable honest moments that are real and not always reaching for a laugh.” So what are we to make of the final, shameless shot of Jon Hamm (as Wiig’s quasi-boyfriend) shirtless in bed? Feig laughs. “I think we all want to see that!”

Kristen Wiig is not the maid of honor in a movie just kidding she is and Rose Byrne is a bridesmaid

DON DRAPER. I will see this.
Looks funny. I’m in.
Who does Hamm play? This looks awesome!
I laughed out loud at john hamm’s line reading in that – so amazing. i will for sure see this
Poor Jon – couldn’t Ellie or Wendi been his girlfriend?
I love it–it’s the female version of The Hangover
Raunchy female driven comedy? Yay!! I loved “the Sweetest Thing”. Can’t wait.
Absolutely. My friends drink heavily, talk dirty, and don’t hold back. We aren’t the dainty, frilly girls you normally seen in chick flicks and that’s why I hate chick flicks. I can’t wait to get the girls together for this!
“The Sweetest Thing” was the first movie I thought of when I saw R-rated women comedy. I love that movie. This looks like fun too! I’ll be watching.
That’s what I immediately thought when I saw the trailer!
That was my first thought, too! This should have been the sequel to the Hangover, cause I heard Hangover II is gonna suck. This looks hysterical. Definitely gonna see this!
Most raunchy male centric comedies have ample female nudity. Will this female centric comedy have ample male nudity. I hope so!
There will be dongs a-plenty. They say it’s gonna be like The Hangover meets Last Tango in Paris, hairy balls and mushroom capped sausages for all!
These days, it seems most of the male centric comedies have more male nudity than they do female nudity.
That said, I’m looking forward to this. Hopefully it won’t disappoint.
Actually looks really funny and the cast is stellar, but I’m still kinda annoyed that this movie for women is directed by a man. Where are the female comedic directors?
Jon Hamm!!! Will see.
There needs to be more movies about and for women that are not rom-coms. Not all of us like rom-coms, okay. And it’s true that women are so underrepresented in comedy. But I don’t know about this one. It doesn’t seem very funny to me. Although the shot of Jon Hamm in bed does convince me a little
I’m in.
jon hamm AND Chris O’Dowd. I’m in…
eh, hopefully a redband trailer will be put out because this trailer isn’t very funny
Yeah, this trailer is not that great for a movie that could potentially be funny. Kristen Wiig is coming off as super boring and annoying as well.
I’m in
I’d totally see this. Maya Rudolph, Kristen Wiig, Rose Byrne, Ellie Kemper…sounds good to me. And I really love seeing Rose Byrne do comedy. It’s refreshing since I’m so used to seeing her be serious on Damages. She was funny in Get Him to the Greek.
It would have been pretty fantastic if they got some of the other SNL ladies to do cameos in this, like Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Rachel Dratch.
I loved the trailer, the movie and cast look great. BUT, I totally agree, what if they would’ve got Maya, Kristen Wiig, Tina, Amy and Rachel Dratch for the whole cast?!? I know that’s just like an SNL reunion, but still. . .
Rose was unexpectedly the best part in Get Him to the Greek so can’t wait to see her in this!
Agreed!
Women being funny, raucous and rude?! And…JON HAMM shirtless…oh yeah….me and the Queens are coming to see this!
“Me and the Queens”…apart from the dubious grammar of your statement, it’s a shame it also reinforces the really boring fem-related stereotype of gay men who spend their time watching Sex and the City or their Showgirls deluxe edition. So much for advancement and individuality.
geez Natalie… not everybody needs to constantly promote their own advancement and individuality. If Jim refers to his friends as Queens… who really cares? If he’s comfortable calling them that, and for whatever reason you’re not, why does that make him a boring stereotype? Also this is a site about ENTERTAINMENT.
Granted, he’s perpetuating a stereotype, but why do you care? To each his own. Also, Showgirls is actually a pretty entertaining movie.
Amen to Bridget…if Chris O’Dowd is in it I’m going to see it. He’s awesome!
They need to get a better-looking, funnier trailer out FAST.
I loooove Kristin Wiig, and I adore Ellie Kemper, and I was truly looking forward to this… but this trailer really disappointed me. It doesn’t look any good! I heard from test screenings that it was hilarious & awesome… but everything looks unimpressive and weak. That last line was the best one they could choose from? No way, even if it’s R, do they have THAT lame of material to pick out.
It looks like THE SWEETEST THING meets BRIDE WARS, guys. I’m sorry. They better redeem themselves ASAP. I only laughed at the female Fight Club part.
We all have keep in mind this a trailer the “general audience”. The producers can’t go an show raunchy details not kosher and not MPAA approved.
I meant to say, We all have to keep in mind this a trailer the “general audience” can see.
Actually the trailer works for me – doesn’t need to be dirty to be funny after all… Kristen Wiig is the real draw for me – everything else (including some great other casting) is gravy.
It look’s hilarious and thank god, about women. All these men-centric comedies are funny, but only about men. We gals love to laugh at ourselves too.
