This will be a waste of time. You will never top the original. The casting was perfect and the direction spectactular. Don’t mess with perfection!!!
Why the swipe at Woody Allen? Just wondering…….. PS: Gary Sinise was the best Stu ever and Rob Lowe was brilliant as Nick. Now and forever Rob Lowe will always be Nick in my heart.
Remaking this is just dumb.
Sorry Mr. King, but the mini series for The Stand was not good and anyone who doesn’t appreciate the genius of Kubrik’s take on the Shining is a cinematic moron.
you are a moron. Did you even read The Stand? Gary Sinise, Rob Lowe, they were brilliant in this movie.
You should be sorry, John Bata. The mini-series was very good, albeit not perfect and Kubrick’s Shining was great, if you didn’t read the book. How could King possibly like that version of his story when the two had almost nothing in common?
The original mini-series was perfect. I remember a group of my friends getting together to talk about it after each night it aired. I thought most of the character choices were super, and I have to say this was one time where I really didn’t mind a film adaption of a book that I loved! It’s the book that made me love Stephen King’s ability to build or rather layer characters.
When it was released the original dust cover said the rights to it had been purchased – I’m sure that’s it. He no longer owns the movie rights.
Anyone remember the buzz about “Cell” a few years back (cellphones that turned people into monsters).
How it was to be a film project with a huge budget (just the 1st 35 pages would be something to watch).
It died in development hell.
This will too.
Michael Clark Duncun would be a great Tom Cullen….yes I know in the book he is a white guy, but I think he would be perfect.
Leonardo Dicaprio nailed the mentally challenged role in Gilbert Grape …..he is now old enought to play Tom Cullens…just saying
Excellent idea except that he is too old now. As I recall Tom Cullen is maybe 20 years old. Playing this man/child is tricky and will definitely require perfect casting.
I love the mini series and the kubrik film
Believe it or not, I’ve been thinking how I would cast a new version of this for about 8 or 9 months now, not knowing it would actually happen. I listed the character, original, and my choice now… 1.Stu (Gary Sinise) Josh Holloway 2. Frannie (Molly Ringwald) Molly C Quinn (Castle’s daughter on Castle) 3. Randall Flagg (Jamey Sheridan) Ron Perlman 4. Lloyd Heinreid (Miguel Ferrar) Jackie Earle Haley (Guerrero on Human Target) 5. Larry Underwood (Adam Storke) Timothy Olyphant 6. Nick Andros (Rob Lowe) Joshua Jackson 7. Judge Farris (Ossie Davis) Morgan Freeman 8. Trashcan Man (Matt Frewer) Woody Harrelson 9. Tom Cullen (Bill Fagerbakke) Jason Suplee (Earls brother on My Name is Earl) 10. Julie Lawry (Shawnee Smith) Allison Scagliotti from Warehouse 13 that’s all I had…other roles I had no choices yet…
Woody Harrelson=epic win.
my take on Stephen King: please stop writing books. Please stop allowing people to take those books and turn them into movies or TV shows or TV mini-series or what have you. Please take the gadzillion dollars you have undoubtedly made during your career and eff off. Thank you.
J-E-R-K. That spells UncleWalty.
C-R-A-P. That spells Stephen King.
UncleWalty: You don’t HAVE TO read the books if you don’t want to. Leave the reading to us who love and salivate the moment a new Stephen King book comes out.
I’ve just got one phrase with which to leave all of you:
“Molly Ringwald IS ‘Mother Abigail.’”
I love Stephen King even more now. I completely agree with him on everything.
What’s with all the Molly R. hate. I’m sure she brought in quite a few viewers if nothing else. I think Josh Holaway would be great as Larry not Stu Josh Brolin as Stu sounds good to me and lets have some Lost crossovers just like Lost used King’s books in the series
I can’t speak for anyone else, but Molly Ringwald is just not who I pictured as Frannie. I thought Robin Tunney would’ve been a good Frannie.
I loved the mini-series and thought the casting was spot on except for Molly Ringwald – hated her! Cannot believe they couldn’t find any other actress to play Frannie. Loved the book. I agree the Shining miniseries was truer to the book but the whiny-ness (sp?) of the married characters was really apparent in the mini-series (though they do whine a lot in the book too)
I always thought Jodi Foster would of made a good Frannie instead of Molly
