The man absorbing the hug is Shane Black, screenwriter of Lethal Weapon and writer-director of the cult-favorite detective thriller Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which co-starred Downey back at a time when his personal troubles made him a far less bankable star. (This shot is them at the 2005 premiere.)
EW has confirmed Black is one of several directors currently talking to Marvel about the Iron Man threequel, and a source close to the negotiations say his solid friendship with Downey is obviously considered a plus by producers. The identity of the other filmmakers isn’t yet known, though Marvel will likely make a decision soon. Iron Man 3 is already scheduled for a May 3, 2013 debut — which may seem far off, but is just around the corner in terms of blockbuster production timelines.
Jon Favreau directed the previous two Iron Man movies, and said that was enough. His next project is this summer’s western/sci-fi mashup Cowboys & Aliens.

They need to lose the cheese/campiness that ruined 2 and truely embrace the “Demon In A Bottle” storyline that they lightly tapped into in the last one. Bring back the seriousness.

I agree. I hoped they would delve into his alcoholism on a serious level, rather than a cheesy/campy level. What made the first movie so great was that his character was so well developed. I want more of that, and I hope a different director can do it.
I loved the pacing of KKBB. It felt high dollar even though it was an indie. Sure, why not?
Given the friendship between Downey and Black I think that he’s got the inside track for the job.

Yes! I loved Kiss Kiss Ban Bang. It was hilarious, and had a similar tone to Iron Man (with a little more dark humor). Bring these two back together!

Isn’t Favreau finished with Cowboys & Aliens? That’s not really his “next project” if he’s kinda done working on it. That would be his current or his last project. Isn’t his next project Magic Kingdom? Or was that just gossip?
At first I thought this was casting and it was a Val Kilmer reunion. Because, bless Val, but he ain’t a fighting form to do a action film.

Hopefully they will have a new ending than the lazy one iron man 2 had. Same plot…man in another iron man suit fights iron man…almost like the 3 spidermans…spider man fights villain who hold mary jane hostage..

I saw the title of this article and nearly jumped for joy thinking it was Val Kilmer. Loved KKBB (one of my favorites), so I think he’d be a fantastic choice to direct, but I was really disappointed to hear that it didn’t mean VK was going to be the next bad guy…
