'X-Men: First Class' trailer: Professor X, Magneto, and...JFK?

So, it turns out President John F. Kennedy may have had a little help during the Cuban missile crisis: Mutants. The just-released trailer for X-Men: First Class, the June 3 prequel to the Fox’s X-Men franchise — directed by Matthew Vaughn (Kick Ass, Layer Cake) and starring James McAvoy (Wanted) and January Jones (Mad Men) — reveals that the film will revolve around the 1962 nuclear stand-off that almost ended the world. In fact, President Kennedy’s famous televised speech announcing an embargo of Cuba — “One path we will never choose, and that is the path of surrender…” — provides the trailer’s ominous voice-over as mutants fly in U2 spy planes and submarines are sucked out of the ocean with the metal-manipulating power of Erik Lehnsherr (Michael Fassbender), a.k.a. Magneto. As JFK might have put it, Ich bin ein mutant. Check it out below:

  • Mr. Correcto

I do believe you mean Magneto…

  • Heather

Oh wow! This movie looks promising.

    • ew-bot

      agreed

    • Brian

Suprisingly, yes it does. Not interested in most of the characters, but at least since it’s a prequel I know the ones I care about (Magneto, Mystique, Xavier) will survive and this won’t be X3 all over again.
I’m betting Havok is Cyclops’ father in this version rather than his brother, given the time difference.
Also betting the Hellfire Club is orchestrating the Crisis to make the humans attack each other with nukes so mutants can inherit the Earth, like SPECTRE used to play the US and USSR against each other in the old Bonds.

      • storm

time line or not “Havok” might be his dad but cyclops did have a brother and well they should eventually somewhere show nightcrawlers birth… i mean y cut the film up at least make all the movies tie in before u produce them dont be sloppy but great movie a must see!!! and also if anyone knows who plays that song when professor x is at the bar, that irish pub song please tell me the name i want to listen to that for the rest of my life

    • Color Me Impressed

Wow, after the sh*t that was Last Stand and Wolverine, this actually looks pretty d*mn good! I really didn’t care to see this film and now I really want to!

    • KRibbons

seriously. Its about time McAvoy was in something big again. He kind of dropped of the radar for a bit. So excited about Fassbender!! I hope January Jones does well…

      • Leo

I LOVE Michael Fassbender. Hope this film garners him a lot of attention.

  • Laura W

Why has it got a watchman feeling about it? Hmm?

    • A J

Damn this does have a “Watchmen” vibe. I think that can be a good thing though

  • Mike

Awsome i goin to see this

  • Rashad

This movie is gonna be GREAT!!!

    • Hope

It’s gonna b HORRIBLE!!!! Only die hard nerds who at times tape utensils to their fingers without a shame and ride those segways to X-Men conventions r gonna care about this! We lost interest in this when the 2nd one came out.

      • laura

I enjoyed the first two X men, not the third and I’m not a die hard by any means, never read or plan to ever read any comics. But I’m sure, based on the interest the Wolverine Origin movie (which I didn’t see) had…you don’t make 373 million purely because fanboys are going to see it..that this movie too, will do plenty of business and that more people than just “die hards” will care to want to see it. So get your head out of your ass and don’t use “we” to describe your opinions. I think this looks better than Wolverine and I love James McAvoy so this one I might be willing to go see.

      • Marianne

I’m not a die hard fan by any means. In fact I started watching the XMen movies later. The only one did I see when it was first released was the Wolverine prequel. Which I didn’t think was too bad. No not the greatest, but not a complete pile of crap everyone makes it out to be. But when I heard about this movie. I was excited. And no I’ve never been to Comic Con with comics in tow, and I haven’t taped utensils to my hand either. But nice try.

      • kat

        Laura… you are awesome…

  • Sam

Was Rose Byrne the woman with the umbrella?! This movie just got about 4x more exciting to me!

    • Michael

      Yes and yes!

  • Mac

I the Brunette with fairy wings in a go-go bar? That’s kinda lame…

    • Dirk

That’ll be the mutant known as “Pixie”, and that’s not a go-go bar, it’s a mutant brothel.

  • Dave

    Rose Byrne!
I’m actually surprised that I’m excited to see this, seeing as how I hated X Men 3 and Wolverine.

  • Sith Lord J

In the comic Magneto hair is white after his time in a Nazi death camp. Other than that the trailer looks good.

    • Grumpster

Maybe that was about the time they introduced Grecian Formula for men…and he decided to try it.

  • whatnowsucka

Oh my God, I am totally fangirling out right now. I can’t wait!

  • The Blur

Is there a name for the piece of music used in this trailer?

    • Phox

methodic doubt & kopius few – half the man

  • Cece

    excuse *ahem*
    Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!

    as you were

  • weaponX

    now thats a great 1st trailer…
    consider me on board

  • Nemo

Love, love, love. Hopefully this will live up to X-men 1 and 2 (Last Stand and Wolverine weren’t that great in my opinion).

    • Clarice

X-Men 3 Last Stand was just god awful. Watching it actually broke my hear.

      • Clarice

        heart.

      • BigBOO

X-Men 3 was a HUGE letdown after the two Singer films, but still not on the OMG HORRIBLE level of Spider-Man 3 or Wolverine. This trailer doesn’t rise to the level of the Thor or Green Lantern ones, but it’s certainly not in the vein of those former films either. A very good thing.

      • Nelly

        ITA with BigBOO.
