Image Credit: Todd Williamson/WireImage.comTom Cruise is bringing the ’80s back, with or without a Top Gun sequel. The actor is closing a deal to star as womanizing rocker Stacee Jaxx in Adam Shankman’s big-screen adaptation of the Tony-nominated Broadway musical Rock of Ages, his rep confirms. In the stage show, the character sings Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead or Alive” and is a part of other numbers including “I Wanna Know What Love Is.” He also receives a lap dance, and takes more than one punch. News of Cruise being courted for the film was first reported in October.

I know this development will get lots of hatred and “OMG, horrible casting blahblah blah” but I think Tom will surprise. At least I hope so. If he taps into the same manic, loose, comic energy he accessed to do that Grossman guy in Tropic Thunder, he could do well in Rock of Ages.
Agree. I was thinking along those lines too. I bet Tom will be just great but I’m a fan of TCruise and not afraid to say so: A Few Good Men, MI1, 2 & 3, Jerry Maguire, Minority Report and The Last Samurai all rocked, far as I’m concerned.
Yeah, I think he’s a great movie star, so I’m looking forward to it.
I found the Tropic Thunder character studendously UNfunny, but as much as I dislike him, he has proven his comic chops, and (on stage anyway) it’s more of a supporting part so…
Hey, Awesome website silpmy a heads up that I was getting immediately redirected to your home-page whenever I looked at this internal webpage; It appeared to be a browser hi-jack or something, I’m not too sure but imagined you might be made aware of it. Take care
Who knows maybe he will be good. Johnny Depp amazed me in Sweeney Todd. But then Gerard Butler was so horrible in Phantom of the Opera that it became part of the many reasons I hate that movie. Could go 50/50. But then this is a rock musical of 80′s music & Tom Cruise was big in the 80′s so maybe it will be a perfect fit; you never know until he opens his mouth & sings.
He opened his mouth and sang in “Top Gun…” It wasn’t pretty.
I’m with you. Cruise as Stacee Jaxx will not work. Then again, I’m not even sure “Rock of Ages” as a film will work.
I actually thought Gerard Butler kicked a$$ as the Phantom…Michael Crawford’s voice just annoys me, Butler’s was alternately strong and vulnerable, seductive and sad.
Wow, what great casting. Who’s more rock n’ roll than Tom Cruise?
for shizzle!!!
I would think that the role of Stacee Jaxx would go to someone like Kevin Bacon or Joaquin Phoenix.
Dang it! I really wanted to see this movie… You won’t be able to pay me to see it if he is in it.
Worst casting news since John Travolta got the part of Edna Turnblad in Hairspray!!!!
Katie, right there with ya. Boo
Katie won’t let tom out of cage….. screwed

I’m with you. I love musicals and was pumped to hear this was being made into a movie, but if he’s in it, I’m not seeing it.
I think Tom rocks,but then i grew-up in the 80′s….
Wow, what perfect casting. Who’s more rock n’ roll than Tom Cruise?
Sounds interesting! I’ll see it!
That freak is just desperate to try to make people forget how creepy he is.
he is not creepy.
Creepy.
I didn’t know rock stars could be so short. Hmm, what’s that? Prince? Well, he’s more of an R&B star, but I get it. Still, I’m betting that the female dancers will all tower over him…unless they have to try to find short dancers too. By the way, what’s a lap danc?
Great Ronnie James Dio
Since when does height have anything to do with it? BTW, Billie Joe Armstrong (Green Day) is only 5’7″.
Please tell me you guys are not putting Tom Cruise in the same category as Prince, Dio, or Armstrong. Really?
Prince’s music crosses all genres. He’s not just an R&B star.

OK It depends on what you are using the PBR (phrase to broad match) irmetc for.You should use PBR in conjunction with SEOT. Because if SEOT is 2000 a day and PBR is only 30% you are still looking at 600 phrase searches a day which might be better than going for a phrase which only gets 10 searches a day and PBR is 100%.Note: instead of calculating this you can actually set the Match Type to = Phrase or Exact and then sort the data by SEOT. Market Samurai pulls back all this info.
Isn’t Tom a bit long in the tooth to be portraying Stacee Jaxx ?
…and short in stature. Architectually challenged.
Was rather hoping that David Lee Roth would play himself, but…
People seem to get all wound up over Cruise because of all the personal stuff. Well, I don’t care about that. When I watch Tom Cruise in a movie I’m watching a great actor who has been fairly consistent all his career in giving great performances. Regarding the rock star character, wasn’t Cruise astonishing on the MTV Awards show when he literally assaulted the stage as Lou Grossman? Did someone here say, long in the tooth? Well, I don’t know about anyone else, but there were some pretty wild moves in that dance number, and Cruise did them, and did them as if born to the beat. I’m not a Scientologist, just a film goer, and I say Tom Cruise could probably play anything if he put his mind (and body) to it.
I agree completely.
Nick, if you were least bit familiar with the play “Rock of Ages,” you would know that Tom Cruise is too old to play Stacee Jaxx.
Risky Business : “Old Time Rock N Roll ”
Cruise pulled that off
There is hope for this new project
Hate to bring up this “long in the tooth” thing, but “Risky Business” came out in 1983. And Tom didn’t have to sing the number, just dance. And he danced very well too, it was a fun number. Well I guess they could always dub a voice in!
