'Something Borrowed' trailer: Kate Hudson and Ginnifer Goodwin are BFFs in love with the same man

Because it’s been almost 15 minutes since Kate Hudson made a romantic comedy, we present to you the trailer for Something Borrowed (out May 6), in which Hudson once again gets mixed up in a boy-meets-girlfriend’s-best-friend plot line. This time, Hudson plays Darcy, obnoxious man-chasing BFF of Rachel, the meeker, nicer character played by Ginnifer Goodwin (He’s Just Not That Into You, HBO’s Big Love). Rachel has secretly been in love with Dex (Colin Egglesfiled of ABC’s All My Children), since, like, forever. But when Dex and Darcy start dating, and then, six years later, plan for marriage… Well, given the big ole spoiler about Rachel and Dex that the trailer (and that photo to the left) spills, we’re betting Hudson won’t be walking down the aisle in the end. John Krasinski (NBC’s The Office) also has a role, either as Rachel’s friend or Darcy’s ex, or both. Hopefully, it’ll be made more clear in the film. Check out the trailer below:

As far as “chick lit” goes, this is such a great book. Relatable characters, very honest and real. Can’t wait to see the movie.

Btw – John Krasinski plays a role as Rachel’s good friend.

i read the book and i’m pretty sure john krasinski’s character is rachel’s friend from london. i hate when the movies screw up the original version

I’m mad that he isn’t in London! If this movie is any good, and they want to do Something Blue the sequel, how are they going to get around that? I mean I guess he and Darcy can go over at the end of this one…

I will reserve judgment about Ethan having a bigger part in the movie. When they cast John Kraskinski I knew they would do this but I love him so I think it could be good. The preview makes it look like they are going for a different tone than the book did. More comedic.

I agree about the book… not really a genre that I gravitate towards but I loved the book. The character of Darcy, I absolutely hated, it was hard to get through the book BC I hated her so much… but I do not think this is regular rom-com @ all, should be interesting

Same here, but have read Something Blue? I hope the movie does well enough to make the sequel. Would love to see that character grow.

I loved these books! Something Borrowed and Something Blue! And it looks like they messed it up. John K. from the looks of it is playing Ethan, who grew up with Darcy and Rachel. But guess what…in the first book…Ethan is in….wait for it…London!

    • Ashley

Also…Darcy in the book came across as WAT selfish but in a nice way. Kate Hudson isn’t giving off the vibe.

Kate Hudson makes as many rom-coms as I make bowel movements…and they both stink about the same.

    • Allison

That is so wrong… and hilarious.

Loved the book and love the author having been getting to know her on her facebook page. BUT this trailer sucks! huge disappointment considering who the director I was expecting it to be better but it looks like it’s going to be another typical rom-com chick flick.

Heh, I follow her on facebook too, and I really like that she responds and replies to fans in her threads. She seems very down to earth. This trailer, though, is pretty icky. And I’m not into Ginnifer’s wig :S:S:S:S

Ooooh one of my favorite beach-read books! I hope they do it justice because it could be a fantastic romcom if they do….if not, it’s just a messy story full of unlikable people. It’s much to Emily Giffin’s credit that the book works as well as it does, hopefully the movie will too!

The book is one of my favorite summer reads. Yes, its chick-lit, but its beautiful written. The trailer looks awful! I feel it takes away from how wonderful the story in the book really is. *sigh* i have a feeling they just destroyed it.

Loved the book, but this movie looks horrible. Typical rom-com. So disappointed.

I’m a man, and (but) I also enjoy watching “Chk” flicks, too. While I hate to break the flow of virtually all the positive comments up there on the movie and/or – as I’ve just learnt here — the book (?), at least on the trailer this flick looks “out of place” to me. In NO regard to the book (if any), as Dex seems a good man (reading: not a womanizer), Rachel, played by Goodwin, looks like good-hearted girl with ZERO tendency to break her best friend’s heart, not to mention being (looking) relatively homely and – sorry – unappealing compared to Darcy, . . .I simply couldn’t buy it the overall premise (reading: I have a problem being convinced by GOODWIN to be the third-party here, given the premise itself and Kate Hudson as Darcy, etc.). Meanwhile, Kate Hudson doesn’t look her best; but that’s another story.

(My point for all the rambling here is . . .) I’m hoping. . . in the end it turns out well “FOR” KATE HUDSON, as she’s always one of my favorite actresses.

PS: I’m NOT talking about real life in which anything happens; this is NOT only about homely girl vs hot girl, by the way. And thanks to Benjamin for a good read.

When are Kate Hudson and Katherine Heigl finally going to make a movie together? It can be called “Butters Kills Himself”.

  • Sarah

This trailer just reminds me of all the reasons I HATE when they turn books into movies.

  • Pamera

The books are really good but I am not sure I will like the movie adaptation. My guess is John Krasinski will be the best part of a bad movie…as he often is

  • Lori

Loved all of Emily Giffin’s books. I really like both the lead actresses. Can’t wait for the movie!

  • rick

awesome book…awesome trailer that captures the essence of the themes expressed in the book

  • darci

I can’t wait for this movie – I’ve always loved the book and I think that this could be the best role for Kate Hudson since Almost Famous (and not just because the character has the same name as me!)

Also, really thought it was awesome that they used the song “Fireflies” by Search/Rescue in the first half of the trailer – hope they have more Search/Rescue in the movie, too. Does anybody know the song at the end of the trailer, though? Loved that as well but can’t find it.

So I read the book after seeing the trailer. I really wanted to read the book before seeing the movie, but I was really, really disappointed with the book. I thought it was boring and horribly, horribly predictable. I read it in a day hoping, praying that something would happen. I was very confused as well. I think I’m going to like the direction the movie is going in. Ethan (John Krasinski) seems to have a much bigger part. I’m calling right now that he’s secretly in love with Rachel. I thought Ethan would have a bigger part in the book, but he was barely even in it. I was honestly hoping that Rachel would go to London and wind of with Ethan. Hell, I would have been more satisfied if she ended up with James! I just found it so boring and predictable. I was hoping for some kind of twist, but got none. I found it really impossible to root for Rachel and Dex because they were so deceitful. Dex should have called it off with Darcy from the beginning. I don’t know. I just really hope the movie is a lot different from the book because the book was boring and predictable. I hope John Krasinski has a bigger role in the movie not only because I absolutely adore him, but because he might make the story more interesting.
