Image Credit: Charles Eshelman/FilmMagicThe Nerdverse has been whipped into a tizzy ever since Ridley Scott first announced that he would be making a prequel to his 1979 sci-fi epic Alien – the deep-space masterpiece that brought us H.R. Giger’s creepy facehuggers, Sigourney Weaver’s alpha-female Ripley, and one of the greatest scenes ever made with a monster exploding out of a man’s chest. Then, last month, Scott and co-writer Damon Lindelof (Lost) threw a wet blanket on Alien fans’ giddiness by saying that the film, called Prometheus, would actually not be an Alien prequel, but cryptically added that “keen fans will recognize strands of Alien‘s DNA” in the film. So which is it? READ FULL STORY »

'Apollo 18': Details on the super-secret new sci-fi flick -- EXCLUSIVE
The Internet has been buzzing for the past week about the trailer for Dimension’s new science fiction/horror flick Apollo 18, which claims to be found footage of a secret moon landing in 1973. MTV even did a scene-by-scene breakdown of the preview. In its first six days, the trailer has been viewed a whopping 4.3 million times. With this movie and the success of Cloverfield and Paranormal Activity, it’s apparent that “found-footage” films are becoming a popular trend for studios. “People intrinsically know there are secrets being held from us,” explains Dimension head Bob Weinstein. “Look at WikiLeaks: There are secrets that are really true to the world. It’s not bogus.” Weinstein also balks at the idea that this is a work of fiction. “We didn’t shoot anything,” he says. “We found it. Found baby!” Uh huh. READ FULL STORY »
Warner Bros. plans a new version of 'The Bodyguard': Is this the kind of remake we want to see?
Scratch beneath the shiny, Oscar-glammy surface and the ugly, unavoidable truth is that the movie business has some serious problems these days: Ticket sales were down five percent last year, DVD revenues continue to evaporate, and last month was the worst January for the industry in 20 years. In this week’s issue of Entertainment Weekly, we offer 10 fixes to help Hollywood get its mojo back — among them, Don’t remake good movies; remake bad ones. READ FULL STORY »
'The Hangover Part II' trailer: Three men and a monkey
A man with a shaved head, a man with a face tattoo, a clothed monkey, and Bradley Cooper walk down the streets of Bangkok. What’s the punchline? We don’t know yet! (Twist!) The first teaser for Todd Phillips’ follow-up to his 2009 hit, The Hangover, has hit the Web — and it looks like the director is still attempting to keep the film’s plot under wraps. (Even when baited by EW, Phillips remained mum on details.) I will say, though: If we can’t have Carlos in The Hangover Part II (out Memorial Day), I will settle for the monkey. But where’s Justin Bartha’s Doug? Dude’s gotta start wearing a bell. See the trailer after the jump! READ FULL STORY »
'Paul' red band trailer: Seth Rogen's alien is a baller
What do we learn about alien Paul (Seth Rogen) in the March 18 film’s new red band trailer? Well, he’s “kinda rude,” according to Kristen Wiig’s character, he (naturally) enjoys Reese’s Pieces, and earthlings are oddly fixated on his “spaceman balls.” Seriously, Paul’s groin gets not one, not two, but three mentions in the trailer — and, since I’m a 13-year-old boy, I’ll admit I giggled. Paul could be a film, like Rogen’s Pineapple Express, that benefits from a promising red band trailer — the sheer silliness of Paul‘s plot is bolstered by some R-rated gags. Tame, somewhat predictable jokes seen in previous trailers made me worry I’d be unable to focus on anything other than bad CGI. Watch the new red band trailer for Paul below. READ FULL STORY »
'Source Code' teaser trailer: Train jumping, time traveling, and pretty blue eyes
It’s not typical for teaser trailers to be released after the trailer, but I’m not complaining in this case. Because when it comes to piecing together Source Code‘s convoluted plot, I feel like every little bit helps.
Unfortunately, if you’re efforts have resulted like mine, you’ve probably watched this new teaser 10 times and gained no further understanding. Oh, high-brow, futuristic movies, how you baffle me so. Those attending SXSW won’t sit in confusion much longer — the movie opens there March 11. So I’ll just wait patiently until they spoil it all for us, which is not to say I still won’t go see the movie. You can take the mystery out of a plot, but you can’t take it out of Jake Gyllenhaal’s blue steel. Mmmm.
