'The Hangover: Part II' trailer -- the case of the missing teen brother-in-law

A new trailer for The Hangover: Part II premiered Thursday in the place that started it all: Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

Thousands gathered here for the final day of CinemaCon, wrapping up the week-long convention of theater owners with a presentation on the upcoming sequel, as the Wolf Pack reunites in Thailand for Ed Helms’ character Stu’s bachelor party and wedding. Unfortunately, his smoking hot wife-to-be asks them to take her teenage little brother along, and guess who vanishes without a trace this time?

Check out the footage and an exclusive Q&A with director Todd Phillips below, where he discusses Mel Gibson’s scrapped cameo, Bill Clinton’s rumored cameo, and how crazy is too crazy for these stories.  READ FULL STORY »

Box office preview: 'Hop' to leap over the competition

Categories: Box Office, Movie Biz

Moviegoers, brace yourself for The Insidious Hop Code, this weekend’s triple threat consisting of the possessed-child horror film Insidious, the Easter Bunny comedy Hop, and the multiverse thriller Source Code. One of these movies (Source Code) is receiving much better reviews than the others. But the charms of an anthropomorphic CG rabbit that sounds like Russell Brand and poops jelly beans will be too hard to resist, so expect Hop to collect the biggest box-office egg this weekend. The overall box office, however, should once again trail last year’s tally, when Clash of the Titans debuted to a staggering $61.2 million. Here are my predictions for the top five: READ FULL STORY »

'Everything Must Go' trailer: Will Ferrell and the never-ending yard sale

Selling old books, appliances, and other tchotchkes from his front lawn appears to be the best free therapy in the world for Will Ferrell’s character in the quirky dramedy Everything Must Go. Making his latest foray into more dramatic territory, following Stranger Than Fiction and Winter’s Passing, Ferrell plays an alcoholic salesman who, after losing his job and being left by his wife, moves all of his possessions onto his suburban front lawn and decides to hold a yard sale in an attempt to start anew. The modestly budgeted indie, which is based on a Raymond Carver short story and co-stars Rebecca Hall and Laura Dern, premiered at last year’s Toronto Film Festival and is scheduled for release in select theaters May 13. Check out the trailer below:

Sony Pictures Classics to release Gus Van Sant's drama 'Restless'

Sony Pictures Classics announced today that it will release director Gus Van Sant’s latest drama, Restless. The film — a coming-of-age story about a terminally ill teenage girl (Mia Wasikowska) who falls in love with a boy (Harry Hopper, son of the late Dennis Hopper) who likes to attend funerals — was originally slated to be released by Sony Pictures this past January 28 but was pulled from that date and will now be released by Sony’s specialty division some time this fall. A fall release would presumably give the offbeat film (which also involves the ghost of a World War II kamikaze pilot) a better shot at building awards-season buzz. Van Sant’s last film, 2008′s Milk, earned eight Academy Award nominations.

Here’s the trailer for Restless:

Tyler Perry, he of the successful Madea films and the upcoming star of I, Alex Cross, has extended his partnership with Lionsgate with a multi-year deal for films and home entertainment. Lionsgate has distributed Perry’s films since 2005′s Diary of a Mad Black Woman, and three more Madea films are on the way, including next month’s Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family.

“Together, Lionsgate and I have built the ideal filmmaker/studio relationship, and I’m thrilled that it will be continuing,” said Perry, in a statement. “We share an entrepreneurial spirit and have a great business rapport. transformers-3

Here is some news that should make Transformers: Dark of the Moon live long and prosper in the hearts of sci-fi fans.

Mr. Spock himself, Leonard Nimoy, has joined the film as the voice of Sentinel Prime, the predecessor of Optimus Prime whose wrecked body is seen in the teaser trailer, found crash-landed on the moon by the Apollo 11 astronauts in 1969. Later, after being brought to earth, he takes the disguise form of a fire engine in the movie’s massive, climactic battle through Chicago.

Apart from his obvious Star Trek cred, Nimoy also has a history with Hasbro’s shape-shifting alien robots: READ FULL STORY »

'Bad Teacher' Cameron Diaz earns an A at CinemaCon -- for @$$#*!&

Cameron-Diaz

In Bad Teacher, Cameron Diaz stars as a pot-smoking, profanity-spewing, inappropriately slutty would-be molder of young minds. Footage of the June 24 comedy screened for theater owners at the annual CinemaCon gathering, where she was honored by the group as its female star of the year.

The actress sat down with EW to discuss the world’s worst educator (see the film’s NSFW curse-filled red-band trailer below), as well as her upcoming role in the Joel and Ethan Coen-scripted Gambit remake, and the fake reports that she’s making a baseball movie with boyfriend, Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: So we’ve got Bad Teacher, but there have also been movies like Bad Santa, and Bad Lieutenant. How about getting them to join forces in one film, like the superheroes in The Avengers?
CAMERON DIAZ: Definitely. Sure. [Laughs] We could have a series of Bads who team up. READ FULL STORY »

'Thor' clip: Don't tase me, bro!

When your immortal father wants to punish you, he knows exactly where to banish you: the realm of New Mexico. At least that’s what happens to Thor in this summer’s superhero movie, out May 6. A new clip teases a little more of that first moment when the strapping Norse god first lands on earth and meets the women who will help him in his new environment. Natalie Portman is the level-headed one — a woman of science — and Kat Dennings is a tad more flighty — she goes from volunteering to provide CPR on a “hammer’d” Thor to tasering him in panic. Take a look. READ FULL STORY »

'Super 8' sneak peek: A mysterious little tease of J.J. Abrams' mystery film

J.J. Abrams, you are such a tease this week. A couple days ago, the Star Trek helmer was at Cinemacon to talk up — and show off — his new flick Super 8, igniting much buzz for the Steven Spielberg-inspired coming-of-age/monster-in-a-small-town tale opening on June 10 Today, a mysterious package arrived at EW HQ containing a small, slightly-weathered, so-very-seventies orange box of Kodak Kodachrome 40 super 8 film. Outside the box: An expiration date of “08/1988″ and the numbers “761 7820″. Inside the box: A white plastic cartridge, holding a short reel of film offering about 30 frames of footage – a literal little tease of film. Holding the film strip up to our window, we can see a presidential-looking dude sitting at a desk with a U.S. flag behind him and talks directly to camera. The box also contained an instruction to send an email with a separate code to an address at super8-movie.com. After doing so, we headed over to the website, clicked on the feature labelled “Editing Room,” and there was our strip of film, dangling from a dark room hook. You can see it here — along with other strips of film, as well. My guess is more and more of these films strips will be added to the site’s “Editing Room” in the days or weeks to come, and taken together, will add up to a scene offering some backstory for/insight into the movie. (Shades of: The Lost Experience.) More to come as more is revealed.
