'Star Wars: The Phantom Menace' gets 3-D release date

A long time ago (last September), Lucasfilm announced plans to begin re-releasing the Star Wars movies in 3-D, starting with The Phantom Menace. Today, 20th Century Fox announced that the movie will be released on Feb. 10, 2012.

To paraphrase Darth Vader  — will this be a day long remembered?

None of the Star Wars movies were shot in 3-D, so they are undergoing a conversion overseen by Industrial Light & Magic and digital pioneer, John Knoll, who is also the co-creator of PhotoShop. During the original announcement, Lucasfilm spokeswoman Lynne Hale said they were holding back on selecting a specific date because they wanted to provide enough time to do the 3-D reprocessing properly and not rush to meet an artificial deadline.

Though the prequels were shot more recently than the original Star Wars trilogy, they include many more complicated visual effects, which makes converting them much trickier, Knoll told USA Today in September. “There are thousands and thousands of flying images,” he says. “But the nice thing about stereo (visuals) is you get this wonderful immersive effect if it’s done right.”

Knoll said George Lucas wasn’t planning on changing anything else about the films, as he did in the ’90s when the original trilogy was re-released in theaters with upgraded special effects and a controversial Greedo-shoots-first story alteration.

Geez… how much MORE money does George Lucas need?

And come on now… 3D sucks. We should have left the technology back in the 80’s, where it firmly belongs.

even messa think Lucas hasa sheet fo brains

I agree. The best director of day, Christopher Nolan, along with a lot of other ones regard 3D as a gimmick, Lucas is just a hack looking for a buck, the Redlettermedia reviews detail how laughably bad the prequels were, who would pay money for this?

I, for one, look forward to paying $12 (at least) to watch a movie they already play all the time on basic cable. Yay!

  • Jeremy

Jar Jar in 3D? No way am I shelling out any more cash for George and his garbage. Too bad Chris Nolan can’t reamke the Prequels.

  • Dave

Should I decide to see any of the Star Wars movies on the big screen again, it certainly won’t be the prequels, at least not Episodes I and II. Maybe I’ll see Revenge of the Sith. But I’ll probably just wait for the original trilogy to be released. And even then, I’ll only see them if there is good feedback about the 3D.

  • Tim

Plus we have to wait through the release of the first three crappy movies until we get to the good stuff.

  • A

Not going to waste more money, especially with the extra cost for 3D, to see the prequels again.

  • Nathan

I’ll probably go just to see the pod race in 3D, could be fun but I still hate that kid that played Anakin and that worthless floppy eared Jamaican Binks.

  • Brandon

If you are really tired of all this madness, then send George Lucas a message. Don’t go see ANY of the Star Wars films in this 3D re-do. Let them flop. Maybe he will wake up then.

  • Lizardy

If by remaking them in 3-D means coming out with an entirely different movie than the overrated, atrocious original prequels, then sign me up! Otherwise, no thanks to getting smacked with Jar Jar’s ears or watching some pointless pod race.

  • Rob

If Lucas had really been bad-ass he would have made the prequels in 3D to begin with. THEN he’d have been a real revolutionary.

  • Wayne Campbell

Jar Jar in 3-D. Meesa no pay money for that.

  • Ricky

I’ll be there. 3D Pod Racing for the win.

I am pumped to see them in 3D. ALL OF THEM! So many haters…but you know the hair ill stand up on the back of your neck every time you see the green sparkling “LucasFilm” come on the screen…then it goes black…and the magic happens.

  • The Dolt

When is Lucas going to give us what we want?

When will we get our Howard The Duck 3D sequel, starring Gilbert Gottfried as the voice of Howard, along with Sweet Kate Gosselin as his love interest? Who cares about this Star Trek nonsense?

  • LAJackie

I love Star Wars but I’m not going to see the movies in 3D. I don’t like it and I’m not paying extra for it.

  • Brett

    Phantom Menace in 3D?
