New 'Water for Elephants' trailer: More love triangle, more drama, no Hal Holbrook

I’d like to think whoever cut the new trailer for next month’s Water for Elephants is playing a cruel little game with us: They know some of us will start out drooling over the sight of Robert Pattinson in a suit … and then feel guilty when his character abruptly finds out that his parents have been killed in a car accident. Well done. You got us. The trailer below teases more of the love triangle that develops between Pattinson (a veterinary student in charge of caring for a traveling circus’ animals), Reese Witherspoon (the beautiful performer he falls for), and Christoph Waltz (Witherspoon’s husband, the troupe’s animal trainer), as well as the consequences. The music is different this time, but still pitch perfect. Hal Holbrook, who was the emotional center of the first trailer as Pattinson’s aged character recalling the story of “the most famous circus disaster of all time,” is absent, but it’s good to know the film packs a punch even without him. What do you think?

I think it looks fantastic! Can’t wait for the movie.

Looks terrific, so looking forward to this film. This will be a great breakout role for Robert Pattinson.

ITA with your commentary. When I saw the trailer, I wondered where Hal was and the thing is I think Hal is the glue that binds this story. That one small scene in the first trailer where he looks at a framed picture, which I would believe is his beloved wife and the pain we see on his face as he looks at the photo is heartbreaking. I could see Hal getting an academy award nomination from that one scene alone. The cast looks amazing, maybe this film will give some credibility to Robert Pattinson’s acting skills. Only time will tell or at least the release date of the film whether audiences will embrace this movie or not. I hope this film lives up to many Robert Pattinson fans expectations and also expands his fanbase to men as well. I think Cosmopolis will do that if this one does not. His acting will also be key to winning new fans, it is not all about the looks anymore.

    Where’s Uncle Al?

    • StewyFan

Uncle Al and August have been merged into one character in the script.

This trailer is much better than the last one. I do agree that I wished there was a least one clip of Hal in this one, but at least we got him in the last trailer. Visually, everything looks stunning, and I particularly like that they showed some more of Jacob’s backstory and some of August. Regardless of whether people don’t like Robert for his Twilight background or not, he is bringing it in this movie. I think he looks amazing.

As someone who HATES R-Patz’s acting in the Twilight films, I have to say, I’m actually impressed by what I see here. I love this book, hope the film does it justice.

I actually thought he was very very good in Remember Me. Don’t know why people hated on that movie- other than those who natch hate romances and have a bug up their butts over any moving on from 9/11- because I thought he was surprisingly good in the movie.

The idea of Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson together is laughable…DOLLAR MOVIE

  • Janice

I loved the book but I won’t see the film. Pattinson is woefully miscast in the role. Too bad because it is a great story.

    • StewyFan

How is he miscast? Not trying to argue, but I am very curious as to why you think this. Robert Pattinson was MADE to play Jacob Jankowski, in my opinion.

    • C

Would it kill you to give him a chance?

    • Cara

How do you figure he’s miscast? He’s the right age, look, has the vulnerability, etc… he’s perfectly cast. Gosh people, stop talking out of your asses.

    • sarah

lol, out of the entire cast, he’s the MOST well-cast. He fits his character perfectly. Reese and Christoph are stretches.

  • C

After watching this trailer, there is no doubt in my mind that the movie will do the book justice. The casting is phenomenal and I hope people stop being biased and give all the actors the recognition they deserve.

  • Chelsea

I dig Christoph Waltz and I’m sure he’ll do the role justice, but I imagined August SO differently when reading the book. More like a Christian Bale/Hugh Jackman type. But like I said, CW is so good it doesn’t really matter.

    • jasmine

are you kidding? there is no one else that can play august than christoph waltz! besides the fact that i’m in love with the book; he is the only reason why i’m going to see the movie.

      • Chelsea

No I’m not kidding. August is described as 30 years old and deadly attractive. I love CW, but that’s not him. Maybe you already knew this casting when you read the book but I sure didn’t.

  • Meg

The visuals were the most memorable thing for me… the elephant, the horses, the circus? Really striking.

  • Pam

This move looks incredible, the casting, the color the lighting the costumes all of it. I hope it is as good as it looks. This is one of my favorite books and I cannot wait to see it on the big screen.

  • Anitamargarita

Wow. I only liked this book, but this trailer makes me think the movie might be better. AND because the author brought it up, I thought the old Jacob was the best part of the whole story so I hope it is more like Princess Bride than just bookends at the beginning and the end of the film.

  • nelson

i can already tell Waltz is gonna steal the show

    • Kate

If you think so you`ll get it… LOL

  • Emily

    This looks awesome.
