Julianne Hough on 'Rock of Ages' casting: 'It's just a dream come true' -- EXCLUSIVE

Julianne-HoughImage Credit: Arnold Turner/Wireimage.comDirector Adam Shankman tweeted the news that he’d cast Julianne Hough as the female lead in his film adaptation of Rock of Ages, and the former Dancing With the Stars champion now says she can’t wait to get started. “Words can’t even express how thrilled I am to be a part of this film,” Hough tells EW, in an exclusive statement. “Between Adam and the cast and the material, it’s just a dream come true. I’m so grateful to Adam and the studio and everyone that believed enough in me to make this amazing opportunity possible. I can’t wait to start work!”

Hough will play Sherrie, the small-town Kansas girl who comes to Hollywood to make it big, and Tom Cruise will play the callous rock star who she falls for. Hough, who left Dancing With the Stars after season 8, made her film debut in last year’s Burlesque and will star in the remake of Footloose in October. She will also receive the Rising Star of 2011 Award at CinemaCon (formerly ShoWest) on March 31.

She is perfect for the part.

    • Joe

I think it’s really charming that she reacts in such a way to having gotten the part. Rarely do we see an actor act humbled and humbly by being chose for a big part, they feel entitled. But her “Oh, my God, thanks for giving me this chance!!” reaction is adorable, and speaks a lot about her. I hope she never loses this.
Can you imagine a huge star like Angelina, getting a role today, and actually stating in public about how grateful she is for the studio to choose her?

      • Jillian

Great point, agreed! I also hope she never loses that.

I’m loving this cast so far. This part was made for Julianne. And Tom is a great pick – love it when he does these quirky roles (like Tropic Thunder). The age difference doesn’t matter to me – it’s still Tom Cruise. He’s nutty, but he’s still a hunk and a phenomenal actor. I think he and Julianne will have great chemistry. Very anxious to see who will play Drew!

      • Brenna

That’s really well-said. I totally appreciate that about her, too.

      • Megan

I concur with both Joe and Jillian. Julianne seems to be a humble, down-to-earth gal, and I also hope she doesn’t lose that, even if she becomes a big fim star down the road. And yes, Tom Cruise may be a tad weird in real life, but on-screen he is still kickass and a hunk. I hope this film is a hit.

  • googie

    Good for her!

  • RCB

Who will play Drew? Is it Constantine?

    • Chelsea

I just hope not Zac Efron!

    • TC

Tom Cruise is the word, can you say bomb.

    • Joy McBride

I hope not Constntine he is really ugly and too tall

  • Justmyownself

Now that I know Tom Cruise will be starring in this movie…I won’t be seeing it…it’s too bad

    • jury’s out

Also, he’s 48. Way too old for this role.

      • kahuna

I don’t have any thing personal against Tom, but I just don’t get his casting. They should’ve cast the original Staxx from the off broadway show. He was awesome.

      • Heidi

I also loved the idea of Gavin Rossdale or someone of his ilk. Tom Cruise? really?

      • Megan

Right. The studio is gonna spend millions of dollars producing and marketing a musical film based on a not-that-well-known property (we are not talking Mamma Mia! or Phantom here), and of course they are gonna choose an unknown theatre actor over a superstar who’s grossed a combined 1-billion dollars plus? Dream on…

      • JT

I thought Cruise was playing her father?

  • REASON

this sounded like a credible project with names like Alec Baldwin, Tom Cruise, Gwyneth Paltrow and Anne Hathaway flying around. Now, not so much.

  • Mark Eggan

She is a stunner. Saw her on infomercials…The question remains would we care at all about some of these movies if the actors weren’t incredibly easy on the eyes? Bring back weird Coen Brothers movies. Get the disease of Spielberg out of their new stuff. I.E. True Grit…

  • Chelsea

I’m at a loss as to who should play Drew. Ryan Gosling has a pretty good singing voice but not sure he’d fit the part(as well as, and no offense to RoA, be above this film). Can Emile Hirsch sing?

  • Cathy boyle

I feel this young woman will go far in life!!
She seems like such a sweet thing.

  • TorontoTom

Her career has really picked up since she began playing the role of Ryan Seacrest’s “girlfriend”.

  • Too Beautiful

Julianne is one sweet dancer with a voice to match. I wept when she left DWTS hoping she wasn’t makin a mistake but I was wrong.she landed on her feet. She is making the Hough family mighty proud, much better than that no good brother of hers Huck.

    • Lila

That “no good” brother is an amazingly creative choreographer and an extremely talented dancer. When he’s not busy with the dance world, he’s also a good singer. What do you excel at besides snark? Never mind, don’t tell me.

  • dee123

Sorry but if Tom’s in, i’m out.

I was fortunate enough to meet Julianne in person at a concert in NC. She actually remembered my name after the concert. I got several autographs from her and she did not complain one bit about sighing some of the things with her picture on it. She actually stayed after the concert and signed autographs for all of her fans, many of whom were young girls who could not wait to meet her. You show me any other young female, blond singer that would do that for her fans. I’m talking to you Christina and Britney. I always thought she looked a lot like Christina Aguilara, but now that Xtina career is in the toilet, its time for Julianne to take control of the limelight. I wish her much luck in her career. I really miss her on DWTS, but she deserves all the success she is receiving now. She is multitalented and a very nice person to boot. I just cant stand that she is with Ryan Seacrest, but who knows how that will work out. Look forward to anything that she is in,. Just don’t have meltdown like Lindsey, Christina, or Britney. Stay cool , Julianne.

Julianne Hough is probably one of the most talented 22 yr olds any of us will have the pleasure of seeing. At the age of 15 she won the title of International World Youth Latan
dance Championship, ( the only American female to ever do so). At ages 18 and 19 she won Dancing With The Stars 2 yrs in a row. Her 1st country album went #1 on Billboard charts. Her 2nd album is finished and ready to go. She filmed Burlesque with Cher and Xtina and The new FOOTLOOSE movie comes out Oct. 14th 2011. Name any other 22 yr old you know that has accomplished that much. I would also like to say that Julianne has too much integrity to ever be a beard for anyone. Get over it people, Ryan Seacrest is a wonderful man and is not gay!! And about her brother Derek, he is probably just as talented as Julianne, we will see soon, he is about to start filming his new movie COBU 3D. These two are going places, just watch.

  • Bob

Julianne is great to watch, but Tom Cruise, ICK, won’t see it. He plays the rock star. R U JOKING! Can you say April Fools.

  • Sally

TOM CRUISE, wrong, wrong, wrong type casting. He should retire.
