Summit Entertainment acquires rights to 'Deepwater Horizon'

DEEPWATER-HORIZONImage Credit: U.S. Coast Guard via Getty ImagesSummit Entertainment has announced that they, along with Participant Media and in association with Imagenation Abu Dhabi, have acquired the film rights to the New York Times article “Deepwater Horizon’s Final Hour.”

The article — published last December and written by David Barstow, David Rohde, and Stephanie Paul — chronicles the hours leading up to the events of April 20, 2010, when the oil rig tragedy resulted in the deaths of 11 people, injuring 16 more, and became the worst oil spill in U.S. history.

Erik Feig, Summit’s President of Production, says in the official release, “This film will portray the great heroism that took place last year on the Deepwater Horizon rig and how colleagues so courageously came to each other’s aide. This piece in The New York Times evoked the raw emotion these brave men experienced and endured throughout the tragedy that took place in April of last year and we hope to evoke the same emotions for our audience with this movie.”

The film will be written by Matthew Sand (American by Blood, Brothers in Arms) and Summit is currently in negotiations with Lorenzo Di Bonaventura (Transformers) to produce.

I’d rather see a movie about the spill, what went wrong and BP’s negligence. Along the lines of Dead Ahead: the Exxon Valdez Disaster (fabulous TV movie). I suppose that will be coming after a few more years.
