The man who once found his dead dad in a Midwestern cornfield is about to find himself a son in another. Field of Dreams star Kevin Costner is finalizing a deal to play Clark Kent’s adopted dad Jonathan Kent in director Zack Snyder’s 2012 Superman reboot, said to be titled Superman: Man of Steel. He’ll join Diane Lane, who’s been cast as Martha Kent, and of course Henry Cavill, tapped to play Clark Kent/Superman.
“Jonathan Kent is the only father figure Clark has ever had, the man who was there to help Clark understand what he was meant to do in the world as Superman,” said Snyder in a statement. “Kevin will be able to communicate the quiet strength of this rural American man who raised the greatest super hero of all time.”
Christopher Nolan, Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, and Deborah Snyder are producing the film, and David S. Goyer is penning the screenplay. The movie is slated for release Dec. 2012.

Won’t compare to the greatness that John Schneider did with Jonathan Kent
He really won’t.
So true!
Well of course your opinion is biased, John did play the role for what, 7 seasons? I have no doubt Costner (real talent) would give John a run for his money. Diane Lane, ohh not so much.
John Ford beats all of their brains out. Schneider would come in second though
With the exceptions of the Untouchables, Costner is nothing but a hack. And that film had a few other major league stars to carry his slack at that. Speaking of the “major leagues”, Field of Dreams is one of the most over-rated films of ALL time.
Did you just say Kevin Costner is real talent but Diane Lane not so much? HAHAHAHAHA, kevin Costner has only done one role (Mr. Brooks) I would consider him actually ACTING and not just being himself, whereas Dine Lane has a harder time choosing roles but can actually ACT. Your not at all sexist.
agreed
Agreed
Yes, I have to agree with you there. John Schneider really defined the role of Jonathan Kent.

Field of Superdreams
It definitely won’t – for the 18 people who watched Smallville.
LMAO!!!! Josh, that’s funny! And how dare people compare an Oscar-winner with some TV himbo who played a frickin’ Duke of Hazzard? Costner will be fine, trust me…
Nancy – Costner won an Oscar for Directing and Producing, not acting. Costner is not a strong actor. I don’t feel that Schneider would be a better choice, but there are other actors from Costners age group who would do a better job.
Wow! 18 people kept Smallville on the air for 10 seasons! Amazing! they must be real important Neilson families! Or mayhaps you are just a fool. Latter.
I agree he can’t live up to Schneider’s perfection as Jonathan Kent.
I can buy Costner as Jon Kent, but it does seem like too small a role for someone who was once an A-List actor. Or has his star tarnished so much from past failures like “The Postman”? Diane Lane is too hot for a midwestern farm wife. They should have gotten Amy Madigan (the wife from Field of Dreams) as Ma Kent if they were casting Costner.
And the film dies a horrible death already. Please!? This hack?! May as well cast Chris Tucker as Pa Kent.
The greatness of John Schneider?
Ah, this generation missed out on Glen Ford’s majestic performance as Pa Kent in 1978′s Superman.
I wonder if Jonathan Kent will build a baseball field on the farm? Lol.
I doubt it.
I can’t stand Kevin Costner!
You’re in luck! Modern movie theaters have seats.
it took me a second but well played sir.
Ziiiinnng! Very well played indeed.
Hmm…. I go back to my argument that Costner and Lane must be playing the Kents as they are today and not two decades ago when they found Kal-El.
This bodes well, as long as the movie doesn’t follow Waid’s Crapright.
But will he better than pa kent from Smallville????????????????????????????? loL
No
Not possible.
Truthfully: No. Those are big shoes to fill and Kevin will only get 10 minutes to try, in a role Schneider perfected for five years. It’s really not realistic.
Not exactly a casting bonanza so far for this one.
this is starting to look like another origin story…..UGHH!!!!
Who cares…what you douches think?
You stole the words right out of my mouth….I couldn’t have said it better…:-)
Eat it…both of you
Finally a good cast…I will probably go see this one…:-)
A good cast? Who are they going to cast for Lex Luthor, Tom Berenger?
Hopefully they will cast your mom
I think that Tom Berenger would kill as a modern Lex Luther. At least he would kick ass and be a contender worth believing rather than some cartoonish overplayed character.
I actually like this casting choice which is weird since I am not a big Kevin Costner fan. Although, I love love love “Field of Dreams”.
So did everyone. Early 90′s they didn’t get any bigger than Kevin Costner.
Cool. But i still miss BRYAN SINGER and BRANDON ROUTH SUPERMAN RETURNS !!!!!!!!!
Please pipe down. That movie had no pulse.
Me too!!!
Kevin Costner will do great, but John Schneider will always be Jonathan Kent to me.
Yeah, I think that is the general consensus.
No, it isn’t.
It doesn’t necessarily mean an “ORIGIN” film. Remember in some tellings, Jonathan was alive early in Superman’s hero days. This could be what they are doing here. He may return to Smallville for part of the film and have scenes w/ his parents. Or there may be flash backs to moments with his dad. There are a lot of avenues to take besides ORIGIN using his dad.
Oh and this could be a good part for Costner. He tends to do well in lighter roles. Its his brooding characters that usually don’t go over well.
Glenn Ford is Pa Kent, not Schneider…
Hell yeah!!!!
