Jennifer Lawrence talks 'The Hunger Games' -- and her love of Peeta

Yesterday, Lionsgate officially announced that Jennifer Lawrence is your Katniss Everdeen, Hunger Games fans. Last night, director Gary Ross told EW why both he and trilogy author Suzanne Collins believe she is the right young woman to play the highly coveted role. Today, the Oscar-nominated actress released a statement to the universe of Hunger Games fans: “I couldn’t be happier about being a part of Hunger Games and to play Katniss. I have a huge responsibility to the fans of this incredible book and I don’t take it lightly. I will give everything I have to these movies and to this role to make it worthy of Suzanne Collin’s masterpiece.”

And now Lawrence has responded to a few of EW’s burning questions about the thrill of getting to bring District 12’s scrappy hero alive on the big screen.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What scene from the three books made you the most excited to play Katniss?
JENNIFER LAWRENCE: I don’t think a particular scene made me excited to play Katniss, the entire book made me want that. That being said, I’ve never shot a bow and arrow, so that’ll be cool.

What character besides Katniss are you fondest of, and what is it about them you love?
Peeta. He’s good and nice in a world that’s harsh and unkind.

What heroines from movies past do you think have some of Katniss’ fighting spirit?
Sigourney Weaver’s “Ripley” in Alien is the first that comes to mind.

    I like her

    • Aaron

She’s never shot a bow and arrow. Ummm……..I don’t know how I feel about that. She better figure it out!!!

      • archer

um do you actually know anyone who’s shot a bow and arrow?

      • Typical Internet Guy

I would just like to point out the irony of someone named archer asking that question.

      • Katie G

That’s what pre-filming training is for

      • Riley

Natalie Portman didn’t know ballet before Black Swan. But she learned it and did amazing.

      • WhiteLady

@Riley that’s actually not true, she had been a ballet student until she was fifteen if I recall correctly

      • Dever

who cares she is hot she will be running around and I bet her boobies will be going up and down with some awesome cleavage…who cares about a bow…or the rest of the movie for that matter?

      • Your mom

        Well said Dever… well said.

      • Sylvia

I’ve shot a bow and arrow. Once, when I went to summer camp; a few times during gym class during my public high school education; and multiple times after that when I joined a nearby Junior Olympic Archery Development program. Also, many colleges offer it as a school sport.

        That being said: @Dever: No-just…no.

      • hi

She was an amazing Katniss she couldn’t have been better. So don’t question actresses abilities. Just because she doesn’t look like Katniss doesn’t mean she can’t look like Katniss! I hope Jenifer Lawrence will sing “The Hanging Tree” from book 3 in MockingJay I bet she would be a fantastic singer if she tried!

    • LetTheRebellionCome

Any chance we can hear JLaw sing before the film comes out? I’d like to hear if she can pull off a convincing singing part. I figure she can train to climb trees and shoot with a bow and arrow. I am more concerned about other parts, and I really hope she doesn’t have a lip synched voice over. Ugh! Someone ask her if she can sing and will she sing in the movie?

    • myra

Who will they cast as buttercup?
      a) a very old geriatric cat that is also a great actor because after all in movies and tv old cats always play kittens.
      b) a red or black cat with acting experience and awards nominations because after all color is not important they will dye its hair and acting is more important. Plus it’s impossible to cast a yellow cat that also has acting talent.
      c) a black old cat that became famous not because his acting but its singing but had a 5 minute role in a movie and gary ross liked his acting.
      d) Cate blanchet! She is an oscar winner actress and because of that she can pull off anything. If you don’t think she is the right one watch all of her previous movies. She even played BOB DYLAN!
      e) a yellow mashed-in nose, half of one ear missing, eyes the color of rotting squad.
      f) a squirrel or a dog because there is one thing called makeup and there’s also Hollywood magic.
G)None of the above they will just cut out Buttercup because he is a minor role.

    • Amanda

But katness everdeen has brown hair. Plus katness is sopuse to be 16 not like 23

  • Deb

She is going to be AWESOME!!!

    • JHC

WORD. super excited for this movie!!! Jennifer Lawrence FTW!!

    • bruno

      so awesome. can’t wait.
and i don’t blame her for being vague in her answers either. huge role to fill and thousands of fans to piss off , i’d be vague too. can’t wait to see her transformation.

    • Sammy Shawn

I wish she wouldve answered the favorite scene question… I am curious to know her thoughts on it. I bet she does have a favorite. For me its in Mockinjay when they are getting close to Snow and Katniss kisses the hell out of Peeta and begs him not to let Snow take him from her. I had tears rolling. That is when I knew for sure she loved him back…sigh. I really hope they get this project right.

      • Cash

I have a feeling she hasn’t read the books. Because really there are so many that are acting gold.

      • AB

oh shut up. That’s probably why she couldn’t single out one – as an actress, there are so many for her to choose from, why single out just one? Get over yourself.

      • GPSouth14

i had tears rolling in mockingjay when she watched prim die :**(

  • sunsetsnow81

She got me with the Ripley quote. If she channels Sigourney for inspiration I might actually fork out the money for a movie ticket.

  • jonas

Jennifer is Perfect for the role. Her character in Winter’s Bone has so much in common with Katniss and she was oscar nominated for that role which gives me hope that the movie adaptation is in good hands.

    • cara

oh, i totally agree! i was so worried they were going to go all twilight and cast kristen stewart and make it an angsty teen drama mess. jennifer lawrence is a serious step in the right direction! now who will play gale and peeta? and haymitch? hugh laurie could be haymitch. i don’t know about the others… but that guy from tron could be peeta i think.

      • Dani

I love Garret Hedlund (the guy from Tron) but he’s to old to play Peeta. He’d be a perfect Finnick though.

      • AB

OMG, Hugh Laurie would be great!

    • katie

But she’s sooo OLD. They’re supposed to be KIDS.

By the time they do movie #3, she’ll be 25+.

      • kate

Isn’t anyone thinking of the time passing between films as a good thing with Jennifer Lawrence? She won’t physically change that much as she’s already 20. Now if they’d cast Hailee or Chloe, imagine how much they would physically change going from 14 to 19 over the course of the filming. Not to mention Hailee is already 5’9″ at 14. She’ll be 6 feet or more in 5 years!

      • chris

You do realize the whole “kids fighting kids” thing isn’t even relevant after the first book, don’t you? It won’t matter if she looks slightly older by the end.

      • Anthony

It could be relevant seeing as the series only takes place in about a 1.5-2 year span, if that.

  • mika

i love her already…she’ll be great.

    • katie

EXCEPT that she’s 20 years old. And–I’m just speculating here–based on her answers, I’m guessing she hasn’t even read the books yet. “Oh, I like all parts of the book…”…said the person who couldn’t even mention Rue’s song or the flaming costume chariot ride.

      • katey

I TOTALLY thought the same thing when I read this article. She was so vague.. I was like.. “wow, she hasn’t read the book yet” because, really, who wouldn’t have at least one scene from the book that really stands out? That kind of bums me out.. I was hopeful she’d be a good Katniss. Now I’m not so sure.

      • ash

It doesn’t matter if she hasn’t read the books yet. She will now that she’s got the part.

      • December

Or maybe she just doesn’t want to offend any of the fans by being partial to some scene.

I actually am alright with Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss. She actually seems like she can pull it off.

And, people, get real. So what if she’s 20? At least she doesn’t look 30. Better yet, SuCo (author) is happy with her, so that’s all it takes for me.

      • elcamino

It didn’t seem from her interview at that carpet thing of her knowing of Winter Bone either. It was her mother that read the book and said ut would be good for her. She did great in that movie. Its not likely most actors have read something before they audition. Not even being able to as many times as they try for stuff. I’m not even a Taylor Swift fan but as of music. Does anybody think when the musicians tried out for her band they knew of her and knew any of her music. They went on to sell several million records after that.

      • kimmy

i recall red carpet interviews w/ her mother who said that she was reading the books. i would assume if her mother was r eading them, there’s a chance Jen was reading them.

      • Nesibe

that there is aonther seires that the characters of that one show up in these and these characters show up in them. They are never main characters and they aren’t really important to the plot but apparently it’s really cool and well done.

  • m.

So happy that Jennifer Lawrence is playing Katniss!. I saw Winter’s Bone and thought, wow, Ree Dolly reminds me a lot of Katniss Everdeen and when they start the casting process for The Hunger Games, Jennifer Lawrence should play her and she is!…I’m a happy Hunger Games fan.

  • lalaland

She is so awesome…hollywood finally made a right choice!

    • Andreia

Well I was rllaey rllaey hoping they would choose someone that LOOKED slightly like Katniss so, if they don’t dye her hair, I’m gonna be very annoyed. I must admit; she looks kinda, uh, dreamy, to be Katniss, but, um, we’ll see, I guess. (Although I was going for Hailee Steinfield (she’s a good actress (Nominated for an Academy Award at 14?) and looks like a Katniss) or Emma Roberts)

  • THG fan

Jennifer Lawrence is great, isn’t she.
Hope they announce the cast for Peeta and Gale , ect.

  • fs

i love her .My friends told me a place —Meetriches.c’o-m—I try and find it is great . In there ,I know many rich people and find my love . so I want to introduce it to all s’ingles .

  • Claire

yes!! she’s going to be awesome

  • Flip

    She’s a squirrel-killer. I hate her.

    • Ha :P

Katniss kills squirrels too, and more.

    • chocolateislove

And she didn’t kill the squirrels in “Winter’s Bone.” They were probably already dead.

      • Captain

They were. A hunter brought them frozen. She just skinned the squirrel, and Katniss does too.

      • Flip

        It’s still sickening. Yuck!

      • Liz Lemon

Katniss kills deers and rabbits and all kinds of animals. That’s how her and Gale hunting.
I hope they don’t get too graphic with that stuff in the movie. I love animals, so….

    • Heather P

Katniss kills a lot of squirrels. Already being a squirrel killer is a plus for the part.

  • sam

That’s it? Just three questions? Really EW? C’mon! I want more questions answered!!

    • Liz Lemon

Maybe they thought her answers would be longer.

      • katie

        Or more intelligent…

      • AB

Or here’s a thought, Intelligent Katie – maybe EW EDITED the interview and published more in the print magazine. But I’m sure you’re so smart, you thought of that. NOT.

  • Max

Can we please have a VIDEO interview? LOL xD

  • Carrie

Okay, I like her already. I loved Peeta and I like the fact that she mentioned Ripley.

  • Liz Lemon

I wouldn’t call the books a “masterpiece” she’s definitely sucking up, but it’s nice to know she respects the series and the fans.

    • katie

Doubt she’s even read the books, based on her answers. $10 says she only had Peeta’s name because she’s knows he’s the romantic lead they’re casting.

      • reader

I don’t know why but I totally see the role of Cinna going to William Fichtner. It’s so weird because he is who I pictured in my head as I was reading the book. I guess I’ll see.

      • Liz Lemon

Cinna’s the only role that I don’t have an actor in mind for. He’s going to be a hard one to cast.

      • J

I pictured Cillian Murphy the whole time I was reading it. Very beautiful man, just like Cinna.
