'Mr. Popper's Penguins' trailer: Jim Carrey loves animals (If it gets cold enough!)

The last time Jim Carrey was living with a bunch of penguins, Ray Finkle still held a grudge against Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino. In the first teaser trailer for this summer’s Mr. Popper’s Penguins, Carrey finds himself reluctantly hosting a colony of gentoo penguins, and they are driving him insane! “Pull yourself together,” says Uncle Junior (Dominic Chianese). “Your house is full of penguins.” Too late. Before long, Carrey’s Popper is teaching them the dance steps to Vanilla Ice’s “Ice, Ice Baby.” Take a look below.

My childhood just evaporated before my eyes. I loved this book… I will NOT be seeing this movie. Ugh.

  • Mr. Holloway

Still don’t understand why the filmmakers would throw such a great, original story out the window.

I get that they think it’ll have bigger mass appeal if they make it look like a Jim Carrey movie from the 1990′s, but I think Carrey’s shown the ability to blend in with other storytelling sensibilities.

The “hijinks” in this trailer were just painful.

This was one of my favorite books as a child and the thought of Jim Carrey screwing it up really upsets me. The entire premise to the story has been changed, which takes it to a slapstick level. I always wondered why a movie wasn’t made from this book. However, if this is the best Gollywood can do, I wish they had left it alone.

        What an a$$hole you are.

Michelle, Mr. Holloway and Debi have already said it, but I will put in my own two cents. This is a bastardization of a great story. But Hollywood only seems to know how to do that with classic children’s stories. (Grinch, Horton Hears a Who, Cat in the Hat, and that’s just Seuss)

I’ve never heard of this story before so for the casual reader I’m looking forward to it.

And once again Jim Carrey proves he was never funny

if you think you are funnier, why aren t you in hollywood right now making big bucks dumbass

  • Stacie

Never read the book, but I can tell you I already prefer the penguins in Mary Poppins.

This is so sad. I loved this book as a child, but I don’t even need to see the trailer to know it’s going to be terrible- all hope it would be good went out the window with live action and Jim Carey. Imagine how great this would have been if Pixar had done it instead.

Trailer broken. Might be nice if a ‘professional’ site like EW would be more careful about their links. I would hope your staff would be aware of what movies are copyrighted and not yet available to the public. Do your job. Now, I am mad because I want to see the clip and cannot. Boo to this post’s author.

Why? Why? Why? I must have read Mr. Popper’s Penguins fifty times as a kid. How could they turn such a beautiful story into a mess like this? Well is Jim Carrey is attached to it, it was bound to fail.
