Alrighty then, maybe Ashton Kutcher could play Poirot.

    • Lisa Simpson

The absurdity of this made me laugh until I realized that some suit in Hollywood is probably going “Hmmm, Ashton Kutcher as Poirot…”

  • rocknmovies

I like Jennifer Garner a lot, but this doesn’t seem like a good idea.
How about original scripts and ideas?

  • Troulble

    Worst idea……..EVER!!!!!

  • Virgo

    Fail.

As much as I love Miss Marple mysteries, I won’t be watching this travesty. “A youthful spin?” Give me a break. This is ageism at its very worst. My biggest surprise is that Mrs. Christie’s estate actually agreed to this.

    • Jennifer

I don’t believe the Christie estate has the rights to her works any longer. Unfortunately.

Do the calenders already say April 1st at Disney?

    • Lisa London

      Made me chuckle out loud…

Whose moronic idea was this??? Their name will go down in infamy! Good heavens, is no respected institution safe since Walt Disney died and the thieving inmates took over the lunatic asylum? What an insult to Agatha Christie fans and to the great actresses who have had the honor to play Miss Marple as Agatha would have wanted her portrayed. How embarrassing that an American company is doing this to a British icon of mystery literature. And simply disgusting.

and hubby Ben Affleck as Poirot?

  • bob

no one complains about a sexier, younger sherlock holmes, but they complain about this. i would cry “sexist,” but that would be redundant in hollywood, no?

    • Shar

I think this has more to do with the characters themselves than sexism. Holmes’s ability to solve crimes wasn’t linked to his age, it was linked to his reasoning skills and intellect. Miss Marple’s is intrinsically linked to her age, both in that it was her years of observation that gave her the wisdom needed to solve crimes and that fact that everyone underestimated her because she was an old lady. I think if you made Poirot not French, you’d see the same outcry, same as if they had made Holmes oblivious and bumbling. When you try to change a key part of the character, you’ll get a major outcry.

      • Jennifer

I agree with 99% of your post, with one tiny, but important correction: Hercule Poiret was Belgian, not French, and quite proud of the distinction.

      • Shar

Yeah, realized that right after I posted. But still true, if you took away that aspect of the character, there’d be a major outcry.

      • Natzarse

        Poirot’s Belgian NOT French

    • Lisa Simpson

Shar is correct, it has nothing to do with sexism but with changing the essential qualities of the character that make her successful as both an amateur sleuth and as an endearing character.

Many people complained about the RDJ Sherlock Holmes, me included. But that jackass Guy Ritchie did not make him younger. The first Holmes’ stories start with Holmes and Watson in their twenties. He just made a noisy, frenetic, crap film that chose style over substance at every opportunity and wasted the talents of a wonderful actor. Like he always does.

      • Shar

Am I the only Holmes fan that actually enjoyed the RDJ movie? I will admit I prefer the new BBC series, and Jeremy Brett is still my favorite Holmes, but I actually liked the movie.

      • Jessica

I think as long as you realize you are not watching a Sherlock Holmes movie, it’s not so bad. But I’m not a big Guy Ritchie fan to begin with.

  • Steve Berner

I think it’s a brilliant idea! Second only to Jackie Earle Haley as Nero Wolfe!

  • rae

    Fool!

  • Vighorois

It’s like having Hugh Jackman playing Poirot. I love Hugh and Sydney Bristow, but no, please, no. On the other hand, Kathy Bates might pull it off.

  • Katzell

I’m all for young female detectives being clever and solving crimes, but why can’t hollywood create a new one? There is building on a franchise and then there is simple name stealing.

  • Renee

Jennifer Garner is a lovely actress and I am a big fan of Agatha Christie, and enjoy Miss Marple.
However, I find that the studio trying to make a more youthful spin on the character is upsetting as I like to keep things to fact in the book. I’ll see how it is when it comes out though.
I also agree with what some people are saying. While I enjoy adaptations of my favorite books, I feel that Hollywood studios should come up with something more original.
    Oh well, we’ll see.

  • krissysue

This is the worst idea I have ever heard. What made Miss Marple such a success is that she WAS an elderly spinster whom no one would suspect was really investigating them. Horrible, horrible idea.

  • Jim

What’s next? Zac Efron as Hercule Poirot? While I like Jennifer Garner, I think a more AGE appropriate actress should play Miss Marple…like Helen Mirren, who would be TOTALLY awesome and stunning! That or maybe Meryl Streep.

    • Templar

Any actress portraying Miss Marple needs to be British, not American or Canadian with a put on accent.

      • Natzarse

Oh so true while I admire Meryl Streep she’s def not Marple material.
