Hollywood’s fairy-tale cauldron has been working overtime of late. In addition to a plethora of other fairy-tale movies in development, 14-year-old actress Hailee Steinfeld is now attached to a spec script of Sleeping Beauty, according to a source close to the project. (Deadline first broke the news.)

The script, by development executive-turned-screenwriter Lindsay Devlin, would retell the classic story entirely from Princess Aurora’s point of view. That is, instead of Aurora merely drifting into a deep coma and waiting for true love’s kiss to break the spell, she’ll now enter a hazardous “dream world” from which she must try to escape. The spec script is currently being shopped around every major Hollywood studio.

If picked up, Sleeping Beauty would join a long list of fairy-tale pictures scheduled to unspool in the next few years. Disney is developing Maleficent, which would portray the Sleeping Beauty tale from the villainous witch’s perspective. Also in the works: Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton; Bryan Singer’s Jack the Giant Killer with Nicholas Hoult; a new Peter Pan with Channing Tatum; Sam Raimi’s Oz: The Great and Powerful, starring James Franco; and three different Snow White productions with actresses such as Julia Roberts, Kristen Stewart, and Charlize Theron involved in various iterations.

Steinfeld received a supporting actress Oscar nomination for last year’s Western hit True Grit. The actress is also reportedly attached to the romantic thriller Forgotten, about a teenage girl whose memory is erased every night. Steinfeld’s reps could not be reached for comment.

a new Peter Pan with Channing Tatum?? Oh god no.

    • Buddymoore

After reading this article, that is the only thing I could even think about.

      • miss k

Same. The only one that actually made me say out loud, “Noooo”

    • Strepsi

Channing Tatum can fly in through my bedroom window any time. Any. time.

What the freaking hell is with all these fairy tale movies? I thought that the failure of “Red Riding Hood” would’ve put an end to at least some of them.

    • m1

Apparently, Red Riding Hood was just the beginning.

I LOVE this girl. It’s a shame that the Oscar had to go to Melissa Leo instead of her. But I can see Steinfeld’s not too worried about it. I mean, look at all of these movie roles she’s racking up. As opposed to Melissa Leo doing what? Haven’t heard much from her camp about what she’s doing next.

Melissa Leo is currently in the 5-part HBO miniseries Mildred Pierce with Kate Winslet, which just premiered a couple days ago. She is also in the HBO series Treme, of which the second season is beginning next month. And she is in a new movie called Red State that comes out later this year. So yeah, she’s got some stuff going on. Continue with your ill-informed, snarky ways.

Melissa Leo was also working as a character actress in Hollywood for YEARS with very little in the way of recognition. She flies under the radar but she always does solid work.

  • LM

Loved her in True Grit and looking forward to seeing her in something else!

Oh Disney. Please let Maleficent just be an evil witch. I like Wicked, but let’s not just jump on the bandwagon here. The drama, the high stakes, the danger involved in the original Disney version of Sleeping Beauty will be kind of ruined by a retelling from the witch’s point of view. (I’m assuming she will be misunderstood in some way rather than actually evil…if that’s incorrect, then never mind!)

    • Zach

but then why bother with a remake?

    • Anne

I agree. This trend of turning evil characters into “misunderstood, society-made-me-do-it victims” is bull. Sometimes, people are just. plain. evil.

  • tegan

    sounds a bit like suckerpunch…

    • Anne

      Mixed with Inception.

    • Liz

I was thinking the Nutcracker, especially since she’s so young.

  • Sarah

I think I’m going to be sick….Channing Tatum in a Peter Pan film? HELL NO! J.M. Barrie would roll over in his grave if he heard this crap…

  • James

I agree with Tegan, sounds just like Sucker Punch.

  • jill

Peter Pan is a great story but how many times does it need to be remade?! Where is Hollywood’s orignality and creativity?

  • del taco

prince charming needs to be about 6′ 5″ since Hailee is about 6 feet tall. And still growing.

    • Strepsi

      Alex Pettyfer

  • Lily

Yay for Hollywood for being original!!!!

  • Chris Price

As long as its called 2Peter 2Pan: Ultimate Fighting Edition, then I’m down with the Tatum Pan.

  • Creejay

forget her witch role in Hansel and Gretel, Famke needs to play Maleficient in one of the adaptations of Sleeping Beauty. She was born to play that role.
