'Green Lantern' WonderCon Trailer: Space, above and beyond

Attendees to this weekend’s WonderCon in San Francisco were treated to an extended look at Green Lantern, the Ryan Reynolds-starring superhero film that hits theaters June 17. Now, some of the footage has made it onto the internet in a geek-tastic new four-minute trailer. Besides featuring an extended look at Mark Strong’s Sinestro and Peter Sarsgaard as the heavily-foreheaded Hector Hammond, the trailer gives a better sense of the film’s scope. By which I mean, there are a ton of outer-space sequences and literally hundreds of aliens. (Heck, based solely on this trailer, Green Lantern practically looks like an animated movie. Meanwhile, human co-star Blake Lively is practically a no-show here.) Lantern fans rejoice: There are not one, but two recitations of the “In brightest day” oath in the new trailer.  Check out the video after the jump…

This movie had the chance to be fantastic, except Ryan Reynolds is in it… That guy is a horrible actor and not one bit funny or charming.. Because he’s Canadian

    • Michelle

      Wow. Grow up.

      • Devin Faraci

He’s totally wrong for the character, and just can’t act anyway.

      • Tarc

Yeah, get real. Reynolds is a fine actor, and is bank at the box office.

      • Jango

“bank at the box office”?? I like the guy and all, but in his 7-8 years in Hollywood, he’s only had one true blockbuster (The Proposal), and that can be attributed at least in part to Sandra Bullock.

Guy needs a few more hits under his belt to be qualified as “bank”.

      • miss k

I beg to differ. Definitely, Maybe did pretty well at the box office too. And he’s been in enough movies where he’s recognizable.

      • True Chizz, this news is Jank!!!!!

I am going to give him and the movie a chance, this new trailer is a vast improvement over the first. The space sequences seem really cool. As for the animated aspect, I really feel that aside from Batman, superhero movies are only done justice when they are animated because it is really difficult to tell the story in live action

      • Ellen

Actually, The Proposal’s success can be attributed ENTIRELY to Sandra Bullock. The sleeper smash success of The Blind Side later that year, proved that people loved her.

      • Tarc

Actually, Ellen, how do you know? Is there some sort of actual scientific study about the attribution of success for The Proposal that I missed? Oh, that’s right, you’re just full of hot air.

      • Dave

put aside your personal opinions of Ryan and judge the movie after you see it. Sick of reading everyones opinion that the movie is going to suck just because he’s in it… I could care less what you think. The trailer looked pretty epic, you can’t deny that…

      • Grod

Dave, just come out of the closet already

      • harry

        I agree with Dave.

    • LOL

      Craptastic. It’s going to bomb.

      • Tarc

Look, it’s the LOL troll (again). How… insipid as usual.

      • Lee Harvey

        LOL owns you emotionally.

      • Tarc

Nah, LOL just is another troll.

      • DRG

It won’t bomb because America loves crap.

      • Alamode

A comicbook movie. Who came up with this original idea for a film?

      • Chet

        @Alamode

The same people that adapt novels, songs, Broadway shows, poetry, picture books, plays, and religious tomes into films.

    • avenger

Wrong! He’s funny and charming BECAUSE he’s Canadian…plus he’s uberrr hot!

      • Waity Katy but bitches I got the ring

I hate him and I’m Canadian. I prefer Ryan Gosling any day.

      • blair

        holler

    • DW

I also don’t like Ryan Reynolds at all, but I do love Canadians, so let’s not blame them for his suckitude.

    • DTO

This trailer looks better than the first one, but I’m still not completely sold on this yet. THOR still looks better, and CAPTAIN AMERICA looks even better than that. I’m not a Marvel guy per se. Quite frankly, Nolan’s BATMAN movies still look on a higher level than any of these.

    • Tonic

Totally agreed. Reynolds is acceptable in one genre: Romantic comedy. However, when he’s not trying to be silly he just CAN’T act.

    • Jon

Ryan Reynolds is a good actor but not in this movie. Terribly miscast. He wants to do Deadpool, which is cool because I can see him in that but the movie isn’t working for me when he comes on screen. Everything else looks great, then Ryan Reynolds appears on screen and acts like a snarky goofball. I’ll see the flick but probably not right away. If its still playing after the first week or two. If it doesn’t make it that long, I’ll catch it on dvd.

    • diablo

      Racist f*ggot

  • DRG

I’m so sick of seeing this trailer every time I go to a movie theater.

    • Charlie Sheen Stole My Lunch Money

Try reading. This is NOT the trailer that’s been in theaters. This is a NEW trailer.

    • Tom

Raise your hand if you are sick of stupid comicbook movies and broadway productions

      • Steve

Raise your hand if Tom is an idiot.

  • kremzeek!

why do americans hate canadians so much?

    • Loch Ness

We don’t. We do hate Republicans, though.

      • anakinjmt

Speak for yourself, dude. I’m not particularly fond of Democrats, but why is there politics talk anyway?

      • Vic Nardozza

Anyone with any common sense hates Republicans (and Ryan Reynolds too).

    • DTO

It’s because of Nickelback. But we must also remember you gave us John Fogerty, Neil Young, and most of the founding members of The Band. Still, what have you done for us lately, Canada? Really. :)

    • Tom

      Blame Canada

  • Ellen

Americans don’t hate canadians; it’s just fanboy morons who keep perpetuating this stupid notion.

    • Gojan

      Canadians hate the Dutch.

      Fight the real enemy.

    • Tom

well at least they aren’t polish

  • Radzinsky

Awful. Is this a video game or a movie? The CG Green Lantern costume looks completely laughable.

    • Jon

Yea, that’s the other thing that makes you cringe — Ryan Reynolds in this role in that horrible costume. Why does it have all those lines on it? And that is NOT what the lantern looks like. They even had to change the Lantern. Stupid, stupid WB executives.

  • Yesenia

I think it looks great. Can’t wait.

    • Tarc

Ditto. Awesome. The style they chose for the CGI is spot on. Not every job is for super-realistic effects, and they chose well for Lantern.

    • Brian

      Totally agree, this looks great!
The mask looks cartoony, but it’s supposed to be an unreal construct, so that’s not an issue. Some of the other aliens look a little cartoony too, but these aren’t all the final effects. I’m sure they’ll be better looking in the final edit.
Also, this has an awesome scale that Thor is totally lacking IMO. Love that they’re taking the time to show off this entire world.

    • Mike

Agreed, obviously they got past the rough editing. This looks fantastic. Hopefully it will be.

  • MWeyer

Have doubts but seeing Sinestro and Tomar Re is great and the presence of GL writer Geoff Johns promises it’ll stick close to the material.

    • Jon

Actually, the presence of Geoff Johns is off putting. He’s burned himself out as a writer.

  • Cris

As lousy as the first trailer was, and as unsold as I am on Ryan Reynolds, I gotta say I was geeking out a little at that trailer.

    • tyla

Ditto. I am totally back onboard. Bring it.

  • Andew

Kilowagg!!!!! Despite the overuse of CGI (which is probably necessary for the effects), this movie might just be good. There should be a rule in comic book movies though…If you play one character, you shouldn’t be cast as another (ie Reynolds as Deadpool/Hal Jordan and Chris Evans as the Human Torch/Cap. America.)

  • Chelsea

I just can’t believe Blake Lively was cast as Carol to begin with. I mean come on, HER as the VP of a major company? Someone like Emily Blunt would’ve been better.

    • Jon

Emily Blunt would have been amazing. Bradley Cooper or Nathan Fillon would have helped squash the silliness out of the flick because seeing Ryan Reynolds just makes you go, ‘No.’ like fingers on a black board

  • MyrnaLebron

I think the trailer looks exciting. I look forward to watching Ryan Reynolds as the Green Lantern, he’s cute and his body looks great. Hope it’s awesome.

  • Tiffany

I will go see anything with Mark Strong in it. He is my go to character actor. Yeah…it is not good that there was no promotion of Lively in the trailer, something tells me she is going to be edited to high heaven because the acting will be bad. Even the fanboys who spend time in the basement will say…HER?

  • Michael

I love these can not wait for the movie for all the Haters SUCK IT your the reason the world is ending in 2012

  • natacha

WOW; GIVE THE GUY A CHANCE, YES RYAN REYNOLDS IS VERY CUTE AND SEXY. AND WHAT DOES THE FACT HE IS CANADIAN HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH THIS MOVIES. GROW UP PEOPLE

    • Gojan

GROW UP SAYS THE PERSON WHO CAN’T STOP USING CAPS LOCK

  • Sebastian

Ugh…the footage underscores the total miscast: Ryan Reynolds is all wrong for Green Lantern. GL needs to be played by someone with a *major* dose of machismo; and while RR is certainly masculine, Hal Jordan needs to be played by an actor who oozes aggressiveness. RR should have played Wally West (aka The Flash). And don’t even get me *started* on Blake Lively playing Carol Ferris(a VP of an aerospace company)…

    • Tarc

Why? Hal was often a willful d_ick, not overly macho. Sorry, that’s not the character. I’ll agree with Lively, though.

      • Jon

Hal Jordan was only written as a D_ick when Geoff Johns rewrote the character. Before that, he was very heroic.

      • Brian

He also killed everyone in the Corps at one point before Johns got ahold of him. Not very heroic.
