'The Perfect Host' trailer: Do not accept wine from Niles Crane

Based on its trailer, The Perfect Host appears to be one part Funny Games, one part Weekend at Bernie’s, and one part Frasier. And if that description isn’t enough to pull you in, watch the teaser purely for David Hyde Pierce’s hauntingly hysterical portrayal of a twisted man who turns the tables on a bank robber (Clayne Crawford) hiding out at his house by making him the abused subject of an eccentric dinner party. I do not want to know what Pierce’s host is preparing to do with the party’s tossed salad and scrambled eggs. Watch the trailer for the film, out in theaters July 1 and on-demand May 27, below:

Okay…I’m guessing that David Hyde Pierce is seeing people that aren’t actually there?

Well, the trailer was interesting, sure, but I’m far more intrigued by the fact that Helen Reddy is listed in the cast.

All you had to write was “Funny Games” and I was immediately turned off. Honestly, it was the most horrible movie experience I have ever had (saw the original German version) and wanted to punch the producers in the face after watching it. I would never put myself through another movie that was even remotely like it. I didn’t even watch the embedded trailer. To anyone reading this be warned, you will regret ever wasting your time on Funny Games.

That was the point though. It’s a commentary/critique of violence in movies. Michael Haneke wanted to almost punish his audience for wanting to see the movie in the first place. Sure it was unpleasant, but that was intentional and really artful. Although I didn’t “enjoy” the movie, I appreciated it.

I had really high hopes for this movie, and it did not deliver. I don’t want to spoil this for anyone, but the end just left me confused – not surprised, entertained or disturbed…confused.
