Given the troubling year Mel Gibson has just had (see: those tapes, the domestic abuse charge… ), it’s easy to cringe at the thought of the actor playing a clinically depressed man who keeps failing at suicide. But there’s a wacky twist to The Beaver, the deadly serious Jodie Foster-directed dramedy coming May 20: Gibson wears a talking puppet on his left hand throughout most of the film. “He’s kind of got this East End British accent,” Gibson says about his puppet’s voice. “It’s my best Ray Winstone.”
To prepare for the role, Gibson got in touch with his inner method actor. “I’d put the puppet on and go to the dry cleaner and stuff,” he told EW on the set in October 2009. “The beaver would talk to people: ‘Could you alter my suits?’ The way people would react to it — they don’t know who to look at. They’d wonder if there was a reality TV camera around.”

When Mel Gibson has to rely on Jodie Foster to save his career you know that irony is not dead.
How is that ironic when Jodie Foster is one of the most respected and successful women in her field?
Ironic in that Gibson is a right wing bigot and Foster a lesbian.

He has known Jodie Foster and they have been best friends for 15 years and tlak about everything together.. so drop the myth! you got the prove the rumor is wrong a blatant prove! but you still want to believe allegations and assumptions! what that make you to be? – someone full of prejudices who discriminate. In short a rigth wing bigot. So before judging others start with the man in the morror. In what respect is he rigth winged? its rigth winfged to ehlp others and make movies about ancient cultures and involving hundreds of thousands of foreign people to whom he teach acting for the first itme+ its right wing bigotry to help foreign peole? all the movie he nade are 100% non white. The hate spilled by those that hate Mel, the nastiness of those that accuse him of being nasty–that is ironic.

This movie is fantastic! Its going to win several oscars for directing and for acting i am confident of that.
Too bad it wasnt taken in the competition list of the cannes film festival, certainly because it will have outcpompeeted all others movies and won the Golden prize hands up.
correcting the article above, Mel gibson was never charged with domestic abuse. he was filed but the charges were denied. oksa should have been charged by the DA with child abuse tho.
He WAS charged, Sweets, with Domestic Battery, a misdemeanor. He plead out on a West Plea–which allowed him to maintain his innocence but he took the plea as he was tired of fighting the lying liar faced lair head with extra lying on top who just keeps changing her story and drawing it out to stay in Mel’s limelight.

Is this a real movie? I saw the trailer on youtube, and thought Jodie Foster and Mel Gibson had come up with an April Fool’s joke, and I was late to the party. Wow. No words.

Jodie and Mel: two great people directing and acting together… such good friends to each other and such amazing professionals to their fans! How can I not to see this film at least 3 times at theaters before buying the DVD?
