Box office update: 'Rio' ($10.8 mil) tops 'Madea's Big Happy Family' ($10.6 mil) on Friday

For all its G-rated wholesomeness, Rio just gave Tyler Perry the bird. The animated avian film Rio pulled off a surprise victory on Friday, grossing $10.8 million according to early estimates. That’s a 4 percent jump from when the Fox movie debuted last Friday — a boost that can be attributed to the fact that most kids had school off yesterday. At this pace, the $90 million Rio should finish the weekend in first place with $27 million, lifting its two-week total past $81 million.

Madea’s Big Happy Family, from director-writer-producer-actor Tyler Perry, performed a tad below expectations, but still posted a solid $10.6 million on Friday. That puts the PG-13 comedy on track to finish the weekend just behind Rio with $26 million. Big Happy Family fell short of the last film to feature the name of Madea, Perry’s iconic grandmother character, in its title — 2009′s Madea Goes to Jail rang up $14.7 million its first day. Still, Big Happy Family cost Perry only $25 million to produce, and when you’re able to crank out two pictures per year, it’s hard to complain about earning back your budget on opening weekend.

In third, the new romantic drama Water for Elephants, based on Sara Gruen’s bestselling novel, earned $7 million on Friday. The PG-13 movie, starring Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon, and a 9,200-pound diva named Tai, is headed for a respectable weekend tally of $17 million.

Easter weekend has put some spring back into Hop‘s step, as the Easter Bunny comedy rose an astounding 109 percent from last Friday to collect $4.9 million. It’ll earn around $12 million for the weekend. In fifth was Disneynature’s third consecutive Earth Day documentary, African Cats, which pounced on $3.3 million from 1,220 theaters. That’s right in between the opening days of 2009′s Earth ($4 million) and last year’s Oceans ($2.5 million). Cats should claw out $7.5 million by Sunday night. And Scream 4, like many horror films before it, dropped a steep 67 percent for $2.8 million. Check back here tomorrow for the complete box office report.

1. Rio — $10.8 mil
2. Madea’s Big Happy Family — $10.6 mil
3. Water for Elephants — $7.0 mil
4. Hop — $4.9 mil
5. African Cats — $3.3 mil
6. Scream 4 — $2.8 mil

hmmmm…which movie to see? gay vampire getting wet with elephants, or a black guy crossdressing? I think I will just off myself instead…thanks America.

      • Dirk

What about Will Smith and Denzel Washington?

    • David

Pixar films are cinematic gold and modern day classics. Dreaworks flicks, Fox Animation and The Incredibles-knock-offs and Happy Feet as owls OR macaws are pure pop trash!!

  • Mike G

No one wants to see Black people movies.

    • Tim

      How rude can you be?

      • John

Dude, if you are going to claim that Perry’s films makes black people look dumb, try to make sure that your grammar screams “intelligence!”, alright? You left out every apostrophe, period, uppercase letter you needed to use, and you misspelled “honest” and used improper syntax in “his movies bring us as a people down”.
        Isn’t it ironic?

      • @John

Please don’t discourage a person who essays to express a good thought of intellectual substance. It’s the position of a pedant…seeing the sugar grains, and not the Mount Everest of sugar standing right in front of your face. The individual above, whose writing you describe, is writing in the oral tradition of a colloquial dialect, which is distinct from the formal standardized English you describe. You guys’ writings are, respectively, examples of different sub-branches of the trunk of the English language. This is correct english too, it is not “wrong” english as you seem to imply. For more examples, look up the dialect of the Irish countryside (Robert Burns), Jamaica (Louise Bennett), and the linguistic phenomenon of patois for an anthropological exploration of the English language.

we got another two black movies next week….I LOVE TYLER PERRY….and his movies….but YO BLACKS….STOP TRYING TO CASH IN ON WHAT WE ALREADY MADE…..unless it has angela bassett in it as the star I PASS….she deserves so much kudos…..love her! She also only makes movies that make it seem right! To bad she is in next weekends movie….guess we all need a paycheck!

      • Liz Lemon

WTF are you talking about? You dumb lil’ biotch? Please, go away and come back when you (1)know how to use proper grammar (2) are not ignorant and disrespectful (3)actually make sense (4) just don’t come back. Seriously.

    • psychoanalyzer

No one wants to see Water for Elephants either.

      • Let’s Get Real

I know, it is very clear. Instead the press is going after Madea’s Big Happy Family.

The fact that Water For Elephants cost $38 million to make and had 500 more seats has not been mentioned. It seems Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon are getting better protection than most.

Sorry, $17.5 million total is a fail no matter how you dress it up especially, if you pick on others who bring in the same amount of money but you consider them a fail.

    • sassyone

Nobody wants to see all pink people either

    • Cameron J

Yeah, see, the thing is, I’m a white person and I’d love to see this. I freaking love Madea; she’s a total bada** xD

    • aquarius64

OH REALLY? Well the “black movie” is making more money at the B.O. than that R-Pattz flick, and it’s playing on LESS screens.

    • Liz Lemon

      Well f**K you too, biotch.

      • Halo

Liz there is no need for you to get so worked up over ENTERTAINMENT!You all take this stuff way too seriously…if you like Madea, then go see her, if you don’t then move it along….

    • Me

I wasn’t aware there were black people movies. I thought they were just movies. I liked Black Dynamite and Napoleon Dynamite so I must be off my rocker.

  • tomm

Tyler Perry is a closet case, I think.

Also, glad Scream 4 is fading away. How many effin slasher movies do we need? Totally worthless trash.

    • Flip

Actually, Scream 4 was quite good. I bet you didn’t even see the film, you pathetic piece of sh!t.

      • Jojo

Actually I saw it, and it was a piece of sh!t.. And looking at the box office report, it seems most agree with me, so Flip, kindly choke on a bowl of d!cks!

      • Kris

        @JoJo
I also really enjoyed Scream 4 and while Americans may agree with you the world clearly doesn’t since Scream 4 made back it’s budget and then some (51 million) opening weekend.

      • Jojo

Well that just proves that the worlds is full of retards

      • Sven

        @Kris
Dude, Scream 4 has yet to cross its production budget (estimated $40 million). It did not make 51 million opening weekend it made jsut below $19 million. It’s a flop compared to the first three movies and frankly will probably be out grossed by Insidious (production budget $1.5 million) in the end. I’d say that pretty much sums it up that Scream 4 was NOT liked by the world.

      • Scream fan

@ Sven. If you check boxofficemojo.com, Scream 4 has already made back its budget. Oversees it has made more than $17 mil. Add that with its domestic haul of 26 mil (as of Friday), and it has made roughly 43 mil. More than its reported budget of 40 mil. It is more liked oversees than in the US.

      • *V*

I agree with you Flip. I loved it! And I’m so glad that it made back it’s budget and then some! Maybe Scream 5 will be made then.

    • RipleyN

Scream 4 is poop. Stank to high heaven.

      • stillscreaming22

scre4m was, and most likely, the best thing thats happened to slashers in a long time. the saw films and endless, pointless, gritty remakes destroyed the genre. scream is just trying to save it again. for what it was, it was a fun, tongue-in-cheek movie that i think was amazing.

      • Mephysto

No.. It is not, I agree Scream sucked the big one

  • Dave

People who give away movie spoilers on an article like this are just pathetic and childish.

  • keith

Good for Rio. I wish people would stop putting money in Tyler Perry’s pockets. His movies are awful.

    • Liz Lemon

Well his movies are needed or otherwise the non-white actor will become extinct. He’s the only one in Hollywood who actually casts more than black or hispanic actor in his films at a time.

  • Tim

As for “Madea’s Big Happy Family”, I’d say look for a boost on Sunday.

  • Sherrry Fuul !

    She A Hookerr !

  • Mephysto

Tyler Perry movies makes me hate his kind more and more

    • Chris

      racist

      • Mephysto

By his kind I meant HACKS!

      • @Mephysto

        Yeah whatever.

  • bobbyv

Don’t you just love the internet: It lets white people be freely racist again. Remember back in the good ole days when they could say openly what they cowardly say anonymously on the internet? I would love for them to stand around a crowd of black people and say what they say on the net. I’m white, but I’m quick to admit white people are cowards.

    • Kris

Please don’t generalize an entire race based on the thoughts of a few ignorant ones. That’s racism too. Furthermore don’t assume that its a white person typing (although it very well could be) other races can be racist too.

  • Larry David

LOL. good to see i still can piss someone off on here.

  • bored

surprised water for elephants didn’t do better than madea. Madea is played out… how many more is he gonna make?geeze

    • RipleyN

He will make lots more. See, there are only about 2% of movies made to cater to the black population. So they will keep shelling out their bucks to see any movie which caters to them. Perry is just exploiting this hole.

    • Liz Lemon

People love that character, so I would guess he will keep making them until they don’t.
And last time I checked…not only black people like Tyler Perry films. It’s true, that the majority are indeed black;however, people from many different backgrounds love his films. He has a very dedicated fanbase who have been with him since his very first Madea play. Those are the people who he makes the films and his television shows for. And some of Perry’s films may not be the best, but they are certainly not the worst films I’ve seen. Not even close.

    • *V*

I actually own two of his movies and am planning on watching Madea’s Happy Family. Oh and I’m white also. I find Madea hysterical.

  • Amy

Racism will always be here. Some act like it doesn’t exist, others make it worse. To suggest that one does not like a group of people based on a movie is delusional. No one is forcing you to see a movie you do not like. But what do I know. I watch a movie because it seems like it will be a good movie not because the cast is of a majority. But hey this is a comment section so whatever.

  • Mina

LOL!!!you people are hillarious here. I must admit I saw Rio and LMAO!!

  • Bobby

Scream 4 should be doing a hell of a lot better than it is. It was a great movie. Of course, the mindless idiots will turn out in droves for crap like Fast 5 though, further proving the stuidity of this nation.

    • Derek

I completely agree. Scream 4 was great. Planning on seeing it a third time soon. Anyone who says it sucks and that America loves crap, hasn’t seen it or loves crap like the “Saw” movies.

      • Flip

I also loved Scream 4 and plan on seeing it again in theatres.

      • *V*

Saw it twice last weekend and will definitely buy the DVD when it comes out. Yeah as for the Saw movies, enough is enough! I stopped watching after the third one. Nothing but torture porn.

  • JPX

Wow, there is nothing playing now that I have any interest in seeing. I can envision everything playing right now as a “watch it now” option on Netflix and I’d still skip them.
