For more than a year now, rumors have been floating that Johnny Depp — who got his start as a teen hunk on the ’80s undercover-cops-in-high-school series 21 Jump Street — might jump into Sony’s big-screen reboot for some kind of cameo. Well, after seemingly endless speculation, a source close to the production now tells EW that a small, uncredited Depp cameo does indeed look likely to happen. No details are available yet on what character Depp might play in the film, which begins shooting this month with Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum in the lead roles. But, in an interview with EW last year, Depp himself jokingly envisioned popping up as his original character, Tom Hanson: “Someone will say, ‘Whatever happened to Tom Hanson?’ and they’ll find me somewhere hoarding jars of peanut butter and shaking in my underpants.”

Johnny Depp’s Signature Roles

He should be back as Tom Hanson, but as a bowling alley owner (he did like to bowl).
he would be the man for doing that. the bigger news this weekend was how Nickelodeon screwed Jennette McCurdy by only airing 30 sec of her new music video while they constantly promote Miranda Cosgrove and Victoria Justice who have 1/1000000th of Jennette’s talent. there is a good twitter war going on about it too
Who gives a flake ?
I’ve been wondering why Nick hasn’t been giving more attention to Jennett’s music. My daughter watches both shows and I cringe every time I hear Cosgrove or Justice try to sing. Absolutely horrible.
actually Tom Hanson retired or unfortunately forced out due to an injury running a bowling alley would be perfect. They could go for the Tuesday Night Half Price for Cops night and there’s Tom handing out bowling shoes.
Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum?
This is my question.
Does this help? From IMDB…
Channing Tatum …
Officer Tom Hanson
Dave Franco …
Eric
Jonah Hill …
Officer Doug Penhall
Not really. Is “21 Jump Street” a comedy? I never saw the original, but I’ve always assumed it was a gritty drama.
It was a bit of both
I like the bowling alley idea.
Jonah Hill? REally? So they’re making this a comedy for mindless idiots? Fabulous…
I believe Jonah Hill is the one behind the remake.
He’s a good actor, but I can’t him playing a serious role. The closest he’s gotten was in the movie Cyrus and he was still hilarious in that.
I’m pretty sure Nightmare on Elm Street came before 21 Jump Street.
Nightmare didn’t make him a star. Jumpstreet did.
Doesn’t matter. He still “got his start” on Nightmare on Elm Street.
I know I used to watch that show, but I can’t remember a thing about it now.
And if they’re going to recast everybody else, I don’t really see the point in having a Depp cameo.
Jonah Hill as Peter DeLuis’ character? Oh, c’mon! Peter was much cuter! That’s so off-the-mark!
That’s what I thought, alexis! He was the chubby sweetheart. Funny and adorable. Hill is NOT a good choice to play Doug.
Yeah, I gasped in horror at the idea of Hill playing DeLuise’s character. Hill is terrible! I try to stay away from everything he does, unless it’s a tiny bit part.
Yep. Frankly I would much rather see a Jump Street Gen Two than to see them trying to redo the original characters. there is only one Hanson etc.
they better not dare touch my McQuaid brothers
That cameo will save the movie. I’d go sit through the movie just to see Johnny D.
me too…that would probably be the only reason i’ll see it
Me three.
I like Johnny’s idea of hoarding PB.
Like the idea they’re bringing Depp back ’cause the series made him a star. Don’t know who will played the Dustin Nguyen role perhaps John Cho.
Depp has been dissing his time on 21 Jump Street for years. It is about time that he owned up to the show that set him onto stardom. I thought it was a fun show and he needs to appreciate his early fans that have stuck with him ALL these years!! Are you listening Johnny???
If you go back and watch the show it was pretty bad. That’s mainly what Johnny is dissing. That it was rather lame. Not as lame as some 80s shows but still lame.
Although, I must admit I did think Dustin Nguyen was the hottest!
I would have liked to see more than a cameo. For example, if Mr. Depp was cast as the antagonist. Either way, kudos for those who remembered to ask Mr. Depp to do a cameo and for the man himself for saying, “I’ll do it.”
No way can they afford his quote. And he’s got so much stuff going on that he probably doesn’t have time to do more than a day or two anyway
LOL, how can a “cameo” be “uncredited” when its already public knowledge?
It’s more of a contract thing than that it is a surprise. If an actor is in the credits it ups the ranking of the role and thus the money that has to be paid. As an ‘uncredited’ single moment bit it is legit under union rules for the actor to work for as little as he/she wants. Johnny could basically work for a car to drive him to set and a trailer to wait in (plus food) and that’s it.
Is that “source” of yours ComingSoon.net, EW? Because they broke the news before you.
