UPDATE: Fast Five sets April weekend box office record, opening at No. 1 with $83.6 million

Vroom! Onomatopoeic openings aside, Friday’s box office consisted of two groups: Fast Five and everything else. Universal’s $125 million street-racing action film — the fifth in the Fast and the Furious franchise — collected an estimated $33.2 million on Friday, including $3.8 million from Thursday midnight showings. That result gives Fast Five the largest opening day ever in April, passing its predecessor Fast and Furious‘ $30.6 million opening-day tally in 2009. Fast Five, which stars Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, and Dwayne Johnson, is on track to finish the weekend with about $78 million. Assuming the PG-13 movie does so, a whole slew of other records will be set: April’s biggest opening weekend (beating Fast and Furious‘ $71 million debut); Universal’s best opening ever (passing The Lost World: Jurassic Park‘s $72.1 million); and, naturally, 2011′s top debut to date (destroying Rio‘s $39.2 million opening from two weeks ago).

Fast Five provided a much-needed boost to a box office that’s been struggling so far this year. Case in point: The weekend’s three other new releases all posted underwhelming numbers. Disney’s PG-rated Prom landed in fifth with $1.9 million, and is on pace for a $5 million weekend. Luckily, the teen drama cost the studio only $8 million to produce. The Weinstein Company’s Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil, however, had a reported budget of $30 million, and managed to collect just $1.1 million on Friday. The animated fairy-tale sequel should finish the weekend with around $4 million. By comparison, the original Hoodwinked opened to $12.4 million in 2005. And the Brandon Routh-starring horror comedy Dylan Dog: Dead of Night could only muster $270,000 on Friday from 875 theaters.

Holdovers saw steep drops from Easter weekend, when most kids had Friday off from school. Rio, the box-office champion for two weeks, fell 66 percent for $3.6 million on Friday. The animated tropical-bird adventure should pass the $100 million mark on Sunday. The Tyler Perry comedy Madea’s Big Happy Family plummeted 70 percent for $3.1 million. That’s a normal second-weekend decline for the multihyphenate filmmaker. And the circus romance Water for Elephants slipped 58 percent to earn $2.9 million. Check back here on Sunday for the complete box office report.

1. Fast Five — $33.2 mil
2. Rio — $3.6 mil
3. Madea’s Big Happy Family — $3.1 mil
4. Water for Elephants — $2.9 mil
5. Prom — $1.9 mil
6. Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil — $1.1 mil

    America loves crap. Ha.

    • Lee Harvey

People must be starved for entertainment. What a shame.

      • Nicotine

I don’t know. I’m on the fence with this. On one hand, I’m ashamed that a movie about fast cars and scantily clad men and women makes more in one day than intelligent, Oscar-award winning movies do in a week. On the other hand, I understand that most people don’t go to the movies to be inspired… they go to have fun and take a break from life. I guess if anything, I hope this box office success doesn’t inspire a sixth movie of this franchise.

      • Jeff

Too late EW has already reported that the writer of the past 3 movies is already writing the 6th movie

      • SIA

Who cares. If people want mindless movies then it’s fine what’s your guys problem ? Leave it alone you movie snob.

      • Marj

Yea except the reviews for the movie have been overwhelmingly positive. So yea, check your facts.

      • The Man

That only speaks to the sad state of film criticism. Gene Siskel is dead. Long live internet fanboy reviewers, unfortunately.

      • LOL

The Man rejects crap. Good for him!

      • George A. Romero

Well, when the only other option on TV seems to be the ‘royal’ wedding, no wonder people are getting out and watching movies – and of course, Fast Five being on the top of the list! The timing couldn’t have been better.

      • Vasanth Stalin

You are kidding, right?! There is DEFINITELY a sixth movie in the series..Anybody who stayed to watch the credits knows that. In the post-credit scene of Fast Five, Hobbs receives a file regarding a robbery, in which Leticia’s photograph is attached, suggesting that she is involved with the robbery, and is still alive!

      • Martin

Although the “Fast and Furious” certainly won’t win any acting oscars, they are DEFINITELY entertaining.

Sex, car chases in fancy cars, good looking women and guys. What more could you want for “no brainer” entertainment?

You’re not going to learn anything, but you’ll certainly be entertained.

      • Curtis

People don’t want to go see movies about real issues (that’s depressing enough)… we go to the movies to be entertained and see unbelievable stunts… that’s why these movies do so well… just enjoy them!!

    • LMAO

I’m sorry but I just prefer movies like Hoodwiked 2 over Fast Five. Last summer I went to see Cats and Dogs instead of Inception.

      • DW

        LMAO loves crap. Ha.

      • Devin Faraci

Jeebus, I hope you aren’t serious. Or you have the entertainment taste of a retarded 4 year old.

      • Mephysto

At least the 4 year old retard might aspire to something better in life

      • LFMAO

What would that be, Mephisto… Cats and Dogs 3?

      • seafighter

        you got twisted mind

      • Mario Chávez

Inception is a very intelligent movie, but not everyone’s cup of tea. Movies are like songs: sometimes you are in the mood for brainy fare (like Inception or Contact), or you wake up with a silly sense of adventure and watch Up or Hoodwinked, or want to feel your testosterone pumping (in both males and females) and go see Fast and Furious. I find it counterproductive to put others down because of their taste in movies, artists, actors, etc. For example, I dislike juvenile fare, like Year One or American Pie, but those movies could have very good actors, or excellent photography. Let me choose my mindless entertainment and keep yours.

    • Buddymoore

How are you always the first one to post?

    • avenger

First of all, let me just get this out of the way, your a dumb@ss.

The movie was great, super-fun and considering all the crap that has passed as movies for the past 4 months, best movie of the year so far. Great cast, good story, lots of action and funny one-liners. Best movie I’ve seen in a long time!

    • luke

it debuted big here in australia last week too. even topped thor.

    • Mike

Paul Walker is one gorgeous, hot, masculine in shape white male. I will go see him in movie.

      • tomm

He is effin hot and delicious.

    • LFMAO

This film was released in other countries a few weeks ago, and it seems to have made plenty of money. So it’s not just America that love “crap.” So if you’re trying to slam on us stupid Americans, apparently the rest of the world has similar tastes. Which makes you pretty much out of tune with everyone else around you, LMAO. I’m curious to see what kind of crap you like.

    • Smarter than You

Actually, when I want to be enlightenened, I read a book. When I want to be entertained, I watch a movie. Fast Five was great entertainment.

      • Yippee

Agreed…I went in expecting a mindless action-flick, and it more than exceeded my expectations. Reminded me of the “Ocean’s 11″ series but with great action. That opening train sequence, while completely unrealistic, was a heart-pounding great time.

Had I NOT seen the movie, I’d be one of the snobs on here making fun of everyone, but it really is a “smarter than your average” action flick. Great car sequences, and HOORAY for a multi-cultural cast!

In sum: it was GREAT entertainment indeed!

      • Einstein

lol thank you..one of the only people on here who makes sense

    • Satan

You are right,I love your mom too

    • Sarah

      That’s because America is crap.

    • Leonid

Crap is judging tastes. Like you did.

  • Matt C.

That’s interesting that you call this “crap” since Fast Five has a 78% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 90% Flixster audience rating…

    • Iota

In every fast five article the same troll says the same thing during the first comment. This movie was real fun though. Stay for the credits!!

      • Liz Lemon

I just saw it! It was a great film! If you’re looking for a great movie to kick off the summer, see this one!! This series has always been more about “hot chicks” and fast cars than anything, but this one actually has a PLOT! And some heart. I loved it and I want to see it again.
And DEFINITELY stay until after the credits. I was not expecting that at all.

    • The Man

That only speaks to the sad state of film criticism. Gene Siskel is dead. Long live internet fanboy reviewers!

      • Yippee

Actually, if you go to Rotten Tomatoes and actually do some homework before posting ignorant crap, you’ll see that it’s about 80% “fresh” with Top Critics, including positive reviews from Salon, Slate, WSJ, Time, LA Times, Washington Post….

…AND OH YEAH, SISKEL’S OLD REVIEWING PARTNER, ROGER EBERT (does that name ring a bell?)

        – In sum, all of the “respectable” publications I thought would barf all over this movie actually liked it. I was shocked & intrigued, which is why I went to see it, and sure enough…it exceeded my expectations (I usually hate movies like this, e.g., I think the people behind “2012″ should be executed for crimes against humanity).

It ain’t going to win an Oscar, but man, is it a well-executed, FUN ride.

  • LOL

What a sad commentary on the state of movies that this can rake in so much money.

    • LOL

Oops, sorry, misread the headline. I am so proud of America for recognizing the brilliance of Fast Five! Plus, I think I have a bit of a crush on Mister Vin Diesel. He can lube my chassis anytime!

      • LOL

        I “heart” crap.

      • LOL

Oops, I meant to type I “heart” Vin! I just love the guy, and all of his movies! Fast Five is the best yet!

    • Korey

Did you see Fast Five? I’m guessing no. Which means you really have no basis of opinion.

      • LMFAO

You love crap. Vin stole your money.

      • LFMAO

Jesus, someone else stole my name. This is a different LMFAO responding the above LMFAO’s stupid response. ummm…the only real thief is George Lucas. If you don’t like Fast movies, stick to your serious dramas and watch Bravo and Logo(hint). People are sick of stuck up movie snobs like you.

      • LMFAO

The Rock stole your money. HA!

  • Lena120

It seems like all the movies I had doubts about are getting great reviews. Fast Five has done well with critics and with audiences too. Thor’s early reviews were good, and I’m interested in seeing if it will make a big splash at the box office next week.

  • Gabi

America loves crap…people love guns, a$$ and speed….says a lot about their society….just look at the blockbusters…

    • Satan

And we love sex too, what to have a 3 some?

  • john

i seen it and its a good action popcorn flick. the best out of five movies

    • Iota

      Yes it is.

    • Liz Lemon

It’s definitely the best. Although, I’m confused about when it’s supposed to have occurred in the F&F timeline. I’m assuming this one, just like the 4th one happens BEFORE Tokyo Drift??

  • Thom

Fast Five was awesome. I walked out wearing an Affliction shirt… and I didn’t even walk in wearing one.

    Thanks, Fast Five!

    • Mike

I can’t even imagine how sad and pathetic the lives of the “Ha, America loves crap” brigades are. I bet they love to listen to theor own scincillating tones while recitating Chaucer and/or Milton and playing Chopin.

      • LMAO

No sense of humor. I was just mocking previous posts. Please calm down. it’s only a movie.

      • Thom

I was just teasing. I actually liked the movie!

    • StewyFan

      ROFLMAO!!! Great comment.

  • Andy

I am very excited to see Fast Five and I didn’t like the first or second one, (I never saw 3 or 4). The reviews are what is getting me excited for the movie.

    • bob

the first one is definetly the best but i havn’t seen 3 or 5

      • Liz Lemon

See number 5! And I think you need to at least see 1, 3, and 4 to know where some of the characters come from and to understand the plot better. But other than that, it’s pretty easy to get into.

      • Dharmashaiva

I saw the first half of 1, 34 minutes of 2, the last third of 3, fell asleep at the 1:09 mark of 4. Can’t wait to see 5!

  • Andrew

“Rio” will sure have made $100 million quicker than 20th Century Fox’s last film, “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” which reached that amount in 44 days. If FOX did not distribute “Narnia,” then “Rio” would’ve been their first $100 million in nearly 17 months, their last film to reach that mark before “Narnia” was “Alvin & the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel,” which passed that mark in December 2009.

    • LMFAO

What do these all have in common? They’re all crap!

    • Jwhit

Actually, they released Black Swan, which hit 100 million a few months ago.

      • Andrew

“Black Sawn” was distributed by Fox Studios. That is a seperate studio from 20th Century Fox.

  • Radzinsky

Yuck. I would never in a million years give my hard-earned money to this dumb, loud wheezing franchise’s fifth (5th!!!) entry. Let’s honor creativity and originality America, please.

    • Korey

Oddly Radzinsky, I don’t think your boycott will affect the movie’s box office take. Also, don’t be such a snob. Paying to see Fast Five isn’t dishonoring originality. Lighten up. Oscar season is over. It’s the beginning of the Summer season. Try to have a little fun.

    • PJ

      Don’t your cats need feeding?

      • Radzinsky

        Don’t have cats. Sorry.

  • Gina Vera

No interest to see FF but I can see the appeal to other people and the star power there really hasn’t been another film this year with som many hot guys and girls , fast cars, expositions, etc

  • joe

Fast Five was incredible. Tons of action, not to mention the Rock was a total bad a$$. best action movie i have seen in at least a year.

    • Radzinsky

Fascinating. It was awesome because it had tons of action and a “bad ass” actor. Not because it was beautifully directed, or had a layered script, or was artfully contributing to the medium. No. The bar is obviously set much lower today.

      • Tank Girl

And so has the IQ of this site with idiotic comments like yours.

      • Liz Lemon

Considering it’s an action movie, one would expect it to have “great action.” But since you mention it, based on the previous F & F movies…this one was beautifully directed, the script was definitely more layered and the characters more 3-dimensional, and the fact that it had an actual plot meant it artfully contributed to the medium since most action movies tend to be all about “blowing sh*t up.”

      • Korey

Rent King’s Speech and stop whinning!

      • Radzinsky

“The King’s Speech” is hardly the pinnacle of great cinema, either.

      • StewyFan

Not all films have to be Shakespeare in order to be enjoyable.

      • Radzinsky

        Shakespeare’s not enjoyable.

    • Chris

I have a crush on him too.

  • ALC*

You get what you deserve at the box office if you continue to support movies like this.

    * America Loves Crap

  • Mady

OOOOHHHHHH Yah thats great I never thought about this miricle this is wonderful

  • del taco

Fast Five : good fun trash. Dumb as hell, but enormously entertaining. USA !! USA !!! USA !!
