Darren Aronofsky will head Venice Film Festival jury

Categories: Darren Aronofsky, Film

Oscar-nominated Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky is set to head the jury at the Venice Film Festival. The director has a history with the festival: Not only did his 2008 film, The Wrestler, win the Golden Lion (the festival’s top prize), but his Black Swan premiered at Venice last year. (His 2006 film, The Fountain, also played at the festival.) Quentin Tarantino served as the head of the jury last year, when Sofia Coppola’s “Somewhere” was awarded the top prize.

Superman reboot casts Antje Traue as female villain: Report

Antje Traue has been cast in the upcoming Superman reboot as the villainous Faora, according to Variety. The German actress, whose only major previous Hollywood credit was in 2009′s Pandorum, will join a rogues’ gallery that already includes Michael Shannon’s General Zod. (Warner Bros. has declined to comment.) There have been various versions of Faora in Superman comics over the years, and the character loosely inspired the femme fatale Ursa in Superman II. The 2012 film begins shooting this summer.

'Immortals' trailer: The working title was apparently 'Clash of the 300 Gods of War in Troy, and also Mickey Rourke'

I was a total nerd for Greek mythology when I was a kid. Minotaurs and winged horses, super-powered heroes on epic quests, anxious gods who live on a glowy mountaintop — there was a lot to love. (I liked Norse mythology, too, but that’s another story.) So I’m pretty excited about Immortals, the Greek epic starring future-Superman Henry Cavill as a noble hero and Mickey Rourke as a vicious conqueror. The first trailer looks equal parts 300, Troy, and Clash of the Titans, with just a dash of the great God of War videogame series, but I’m hopeful that arty auteur Tarsem Singh will make Immortals something extra special. Check out the full trailer after the jump… READ FULL STORY »

'Bridesmaids' red-band trailer: Now with more comedy (including a Jon Hamm sex scene)

There’s a lot of buzz on Bridesmaids for being a chick flick that doesn’t suck, and with the red-band trailer embedded below, I’m beginning to see why. There’s Kristen Wiig having sex with Jon Hamm and facing off with Rose Byrne, but Mike & Molly’s Melissa McCarthy and Reno 911!‘s Wendi McLendon-Covey also get some face time, proving it’s a true ensemble. Watch it below.  READ FULL STORY »

Arnold Schwarzenegger eyeing return to 'Terminator' franchise, but he needs to see a script first

He’ll be back… if the script is right. Arnold Schwarzenegger has given Hollywood agency CAA approval to discuss a potential new Terminator movie with studios, a source close to the star confirms to EW, but until Schwarzenegger sees a script and specifics about the project, he will not fully commit to it. Director Justin Lin (who helmed this weekend’s Fast Five) is reportedly attached to direct the film, but it does not yet have a screenwriter.

The rights to the franchise were sold to hedge fund Pacificor last year in a deal worth $29.5 million after Halcyon Holding — which had acquired the franchise in 2007 — declared bankruptcy. Sony and Lionsgate had attempted to jointly bid for the property, but the bankruptcy judge awarded it to the Santa Barbara, Calif.-based hedge fund management company instead.  READ FULL STORY »

The casting of The Hunger Games, the adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ futuristic best-seller about children forced to battle to the death on reality TV, rolls on. Newcomers Ian Nelson and Kalia Prescott have been plucked to play the male and female Tributes from District 3. In the novel, Prescott’s character bids a heartbreaking goodbye to her parents and younger siblings after her name is called. Nelson’s character is skilled in electronics and technology, which the Career Tributes exploit.

The Hunger Games will be in theaters on March 23, 2012.

Academy announces next year's Oscar calendar

Remember all that speculation over whether the Oscars would move to January? Well, it’s not happening just yet. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released the key dates for next year’s Oscar season, and they’re basically the same as this year’s. Nominations will be announced on Tuesday, January 24, 2012, while the awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, February 26, preceded by a 90-minute red carpet pre-show on ABC.

Although the Academy Awards remain by far the most prestigious movie-industry prize, it’s become more difficult for the Oscar telecast to contain any big surprises: All six major Oscar winners (The King’s Speech, Tom Hooper, Colin Firth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, and Melissa Leo) had already won their respective guild prizes by the time the Academy Awards came around. Even if the Academy were to adopt online voting and move its date a few weeks earlier, say, to the beginning of February, all the other award shows would certainly adjust their schedules as well, leaving the Oscars at the end of the season as usual. But a quicker overall awards season could help alleviate some of the fatigue many people are feeling by the end of February.

The entire calendar is after the jump. READ FULL STORY »

'The Devil's Double' trailer: Dominic Cooper takes on Uday Hussein, twice

Categories: Movie Trailers, Movies

There’s something wonderful about an actor from Mamma Mia! starring as Saddam Hussein’s sadistic party-boy son Uday — and Uday’s double Latif Yahia — isn’t there? Dominic Cooper takes on the dual roles in The Devil’s Double, which, judging from the trailer below, makes 1987′s Baghdad look equal parts brutality and sexuality. You feel guilty for enjoying the heat.  READ FULL STORY »

'What's Your Number?' trailer: Anna Faris sifts through a gaggle of famous exes, looking for The One

What do Zachary Quinto, Andy Samberg, Joel McHale, Anthony Mackie, and Chris Pratt have in common, besides the fact that they’re all fairly easy on the eyes? Each of them also appears in the upcoming romantic comedy What’s Your Number? as a dysfunctional dude who, at one point, was attached to cute, perky Ally Darling (Anna Faris). (Only in Rom-Com Land would someone who looks like Anna Faris be stuck dating a parade of losers.) When a friend tells Ally that “98 percent of women who have been with 20 or more lovers can’t find a husband,” our fearless heroine decides to revisit the past 20 guys she went out with in the hopes that one of them will turn out to be The One. Chris Evans also stars as Ally’s neighbor Colin, who aids her on her quest. (There’s no way those two crazy kids could end up together, right?) Check out the trailer for yourself below. 'The Avengers' begins: First set-photo from Day 1 of filming

Ah, absence makes the heart grow fonder…

Joss Whedon has spent one day shooting this little movie known as The Avengers, and right now all we have to see from it is this pic from the set. Apparently the actors have chairs that identify them not by name, but by character. (Just me, but I think they should have made Hulk’s twice as big and kind of broken.)

You know the players: Serenity and Buffy the Vampire Slayer geekdom cult-hero Whedon is directing from his own script, and Robert Downey Jr. reprises the role of Iron Man, with Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, and Mark Ruffalo joining the Marvel universe as the human half of the Hulk.
