Stanley Tucci cast in 'The Hunger Games'

In a move bound to delight even the most wary of Hunger Games fans, Lionsgate announced today that Stanley Tucci (The Devil Wears Prada) will play smooth-talking interviewer Caesar Flickerman in the film adaptation. Flickerman is a pivotal supporting player throughout Suzanne Collins’ best-selling trilogy. It is he who’s charged with introducing Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen, as well as all the other tributes, to the Capitol audience. If the tributes are able to ingratiate themselves upon the audience in their brief time with Flickerman, they up their chances of survival.

Flickerman cuts a garish figure — in the 74th Hunger Games, his hair, lips, and eyelids are dyed powder blue and he wears a blue suit peppered with blinking lights — and, like most in the Capitol, has had extensive plastic surgery. The Hunger Games goes into production this month and will be in theaters March 23, 2012.

This cast is shaping up to be amazing. Now bring in Robert de Niro as President Snow!

    • Liz Lemon

No Kevin Spacey as President Snow.

      • Jaded

        That would be sweet!

      • Flip

        No! Donald Sutherland as Snow.

      • c.everdeen

All the actors in supportive roles are great but Katniss Peeta and Gale are so………..:( Terrible casting so far.

    • HG FAN

I’ve always thought of Ben Kingsley for President Snow.

      • anne

        Oooooo, I like that!!

      • lefty

      • Cat

      • Terp

        OHHHHH, thats a good one!!!

    • myra

Who will they cast as buttercup?
      a) a very old geriatric cat that is also a great actor because after all in movies and tv old cats always play kittens.
      b) a red or black cat with acting experience and awards nominations because after all color is not important they will dye its hair and acting is more important. Plus it’s impossible to cast a yellow cat that also has acting talent.
      c) a black old cat that became famous not because his acting but its singing but had a 5 minute role in a movie and gary ross liked his acting.
      d) Cate blanchet! She is an oscar winner actress and because of that she can pull off anything. If you don’t think she is the right one watch all of her previous movies. She even played BOB DYLAN!
      e) a yellow mashed-in nose, half of one ear missing, eyes the color of rotting squad.
      f) a squirrel or a dog because there is one thing called makeup and there’s also Hollywood magic.
G)None of the above they will just cut out Buttercup because he is a minor role.

  • Annie

So far so good with the casting! Love Tucci!

    • Flip

When I read the books, I pictured Richard Simmons (yep, THAT Richard Simmons) in this role.

  • Trixie

    I like this casting choice!

  • Vinnie

I know nothing of these books, but just reading the plot descriptions, I’m very intrigued.

    • karissajoelle

      Read the books. Now.

      • Amanda

        I agree, read them!

    • Jaded

Read them! I put them off for a long time because they were supposed to be “young adult” books, but they are now one of my favorite series of books!!!

    • melissa

Yeah, definitely read them! I actually read the books because of all the hype about Jennifer Lawrence being Katniss, and I’m so glad I did. The books are amazing.

    • Gina

At least read the first one. It’s the best and will take you no time at all to finish.

  • Beauty

Not what I imagined but that sums it up for the rest of the casting as well. When is Haymitch gonna cast?

    • Katie

I know a lot of people like RDJ for Haymitch but I think Sam Rockwell would also kill it.

      • Celimene

Sam Rockwell would kill in pretty much any part ever written.

    • Liz Lemon

      Karl Urban for Haymitch!

      • Katie

        OOOHHHH. Also a great suggestion.

    • kate middleton

John C. Reilly is all but confirmed as Haymitch. His name was leaked a few weeks ago, and all leaks for Hunger Games have been correct. I think he will be fantastic by the way – a good mix of dramatic and comedic elements.

      • Jackie

I hope not. I love John C. Reilly, and I think he’s a fantastic actor, but I do not see him as Haymitch at all.

      • Katie

I agree with Jackie… doesn’t the book say at some point that he was good looking underneath all the drunkenness? John C. Reilly, notsomuch.

      • charlotte

I would like Reilly for Haymitch. I think he is the closest in physical description to Haymitch that has been suggested for the part, but I’m pretty sure he backed out of it.

      • kate middleton

I think he is very close to the description. They say Haymitch is paunchy now, and Katniss was shocked at how good looking he was during his Hunger Games.

It took a long time to confirm Elizabeth Banks as Effie after the leak, and it’s kind of the same thing with Haymitch. I really hope it is JCR – I think he’s perfect based on looks and personality.

It was never going to be RDJ or Hugh Laurie or Johnny Depp or some of the other suggestions people have made.

      • kate middleton

Oh Charlotte – I just saw they said on E’s site last week that JCR was not going to be Haymitch. I will be bummed if that’s true…not sure how much I trust E since they keep suggested Brad Pitt for Haymitch. WTF.

      • Liz Lemon

He’s a great actor, but doesn’t fit the physical description of Haymitch at all. But then again, neither do any of the other actors they’ve cast.

      • charlotte

And Karl Urban does? I think you were reading a different book Liz Lemon.

      • Hendra

jen was playing kisnats I wasnt so sure but ever since I was obsesed on how much they perfected her for the part!!!! And not just her but everyone I mean its like the.books coming to life!! I mean its exactly right ,except haymitchs hair but hey I’ll grow onto it. It actually doesnt bother me much!!! Its probably cuz im too excited to even care!!!!

    • jen

haymitch will be played by woody harrelson!

  • jj

    Excellent choice!

  • Lina

Good casting! I am just keeping my fingers crossed that Woody Harrelson isn’t playing Haymitch-that would be a disaster!

    • ash555

whaaat woody harrelson in an AMAZZING actor. No country for old men? Zombieland? Natural born killers?! he’d be GREAT
But John C Reily was chosen im pretty sure, though it hasnt been confirmed.

      • charlotte

I think Harrelson would be an unexpected, but great Haymitch. I’m really starting to love this idea. I heard that Reilly backed out.

    • Andik

Good morning BrendanI am wornikg as a Supporting Actor with one payslip away from joining Equity. I am starting at the bottom but as soon as I get the card’ I will be looking for small parts to start with. I know with SA its what is asked for but what annoys me is that after joining the Agency, how when I go on an assignment, people have not joined or signed a contract and paid to have photo’s done and yet they get constant work and I have done this thinking I would not get work. Not only is it unfair, but puts me in a position where I feel if I complain, I will be putting myself in a bad position which is why I have not. I have read your book which is great and I noticed that I have already do the some of things you talk about naturally. Thank you for that xx I am not yet an Actor and have only gained the B-Tec National with 16 Distinctions, 8 Merits and one pass. I have not been in a position to take up the work until now some time after my B-tec. I joined a local theatre and was totally ingnored as they are a click’ even after reading for every play, wornikg as a lighting tech, painting sceans etc. I gave it my best and currently looking for another theatre to join. (Brush myself off and start again)! I live outside of London but was about to join an Agency there as well as where I live, but at this time, its the cost. The reason for this is how to get work on other projects like Downtown Abby etc. I know I have probably answered my own questions but it is good to talk. With kindest regardsThe old fossil

  • duh

Woohoo Tucci! Jonathan Price as President Snow!

    • duh

      I mean Pryce!

      • canuck1975

I was thinking him too, although he may be a bit obscure. An alternative could be Terrence Stamp.

      • Annie

My head kept picturing Malcolm McDowell as President Snow.

      • canuck1975

All three can have a similar look so it makes sense!

      • Debbie M

Malcolm McDowell was also my pick for Snow!

      • Valerie Metcalf

Malcomb McDowell would be perfect for Snow! Read all three books and then decide – you’ll definately agree!!!!

PS – Isn’t there a part in this movie for William Shatner??? LOL!! If he was a little younger, he would make a great Haymitch! But I’m starting to see Brad Pitt. He’s the right age, plays a great drunk, and is super good looking! Yeah, I can definately see him.

  • Annabelle

Oh my God! He’s amazing! I couldn’t think of anyone better for the role.

  • crispy

I was hoping for Richard Dawson

    • charlotte

Isn’t he dead? Didn’t he already play a part like this in the Running Man?

  • Amy

I like Alan Rickman for Snow.

    • Stevex

      Yes, please.

      • Flip

        No thanks. Donald Sutherland FTW.

    • Terp

      yes yes yes

  • mhevie

LOVE him! I’m excited for that Stanley Tucci is going to be Caesar Flickerman

  • EG

I love Stanley Tucci, and I have no doubt he will be able to bring this character to life!

  • Kate

Excellent choice, especially how important he is in presenting the story that saves…oh, nevermind…to the Capitol public and you know he is more on the rebellion’s side than Effie really is.

  • Chelsea Allen

this is exactly how I pictured caesar!
