Johnny Depp and Rob Marshall reunite for 'The Thin Man'

One tour with Johnny Depp simply wasn’t enough for Rob Marshall. The Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides director has agreed to direct and produce Warner Bros. remake of The Thin Man, which has Depp attached. “John [DeLuca] and I are overjoyed at the idea of working with Johnny again, especially on such a classy and classic project,” Marshall said in a statement. “We are also thrilled to be partnering this time with such wonderful producers as Christi Dembrowski and Kevin McCormick, and we are looking forward to working with Warner Bros. to create a reinvention of a beloved story.”

Jerry Stahl (Bad Boy II) is attached to write the movie, which is based upon the 1934 film starring William Powell and Myrna Loy.

Amy Adams or Anne Heche for the female lead please.

    • JoMarch

Anne Heche? Really? IMO if she never appeared in anything again, I would be very happy.

    • alan of montreal

      yes, Amy Adams 100%.

    • Mac

There is NO WAY Depp can come close to being as funny as William Powell. Depp needs heavy make-up in order to be silly and will bomb. This will be on the order of Psycho (by Gus Van Sant).

  • JDD

For the first time ever I am going to say “Please don’t do this.” The originals are such a product of their time. I can’t imagine anyone these days getting the dialog right from a script perspective. And nobody can deliver like Powell and Loy. And everything else would just seem out of place these days.

    • AuntieMM

Good grief I couldn’t agree more. And don’t these people have an original bone in their body instead of trolling classic movie catalogs for material.

      • Mac

Obviously the dialogue will have to be changed, right? I can imagine a “modern” audience laughing at the use of sexagenarian or being shot in the “tabloids”. There isn’t anyway this will succeed.

      • Channing

You mean, originality such as mining a single Dashiell Hammett novel for a six-film series?

    • Liz

The thought of a remake of The Thin Man makes me inexplicably sad. Depp is great and I understand his interest, but any remake will just be aping the original. I pray that this runs into major production issues and never gets made.

      • liz

As another Liz, I can’t help but agree. William Powell, Myrna Loy-come on, who could “remake” that? Johnny as Barnabas, not Nick.

    • Baz

Whilst I partially agree, it should be remembered that re-makes are re-made to bring what was a classic film, into a new generation. It therefore cannot and should not be the same. Whether the director manages to keep in tact the original intent of the film whilst marrying it with a modern sense of film making, remains to be seen. Let’s face it, generations pass and the longer time goes on, the less audiences are aware of old classics such as this, so perhaps we should be glad to see of an attempt of a re make, featuring recognisable artists of our time, so in some sense, the film will live on for others to enjoy. It’d be nice to see more appreciation for old classics so that there needn’t be re-makes but it takes a particular person to delve thoroughly into cinematic history, and sadly that doesn’t happen across the masses.

      • stickittotheman

I agree. I like the idea of a classic being reintroduced to a new generation. Thank god Tim Burton is not involved. He would turn it into a dark creepshow, forcing Johnny to channel some inappropriate real-life person like Donald Trump or Regis Philben.

    • Dede

Can I add that if they are sending out press releases about this project, maybe they should know that it is based on the novel, The Thin Man, by Dashiell Hammond.

      • stickittotheman

        Hammett

    • MB

      This is a mistake.

      • Bla

Please! Give some other actors work. Tired of news about Depp in every single movie of the world. And also, The thin man, should be left alone.

  • Jerry

Does Johnny Depp do any thing original anymore? Most of his upcoming projects are all re-makes or something is a series.

    • HD

I still haven’t forgiven him for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Me and Depp are through!

    • Jennifer E.

Just take a look at the front page articles on EW.com today: Johnny Depp on “Dark Shadows” . . . Johnny Depp wants “Lone Ranger” . . . Johnny Depp in “Thin Man” . . . not to mention the coverage ad nauseum of Depp in yet another “Pirates” sequel. Johnny Depp has become a hackneyed, overhyped version of himself.

  • Stacie

    Who would be Nora?

    • Larry McD

If there’s a god it will be Tea Leoni.

  • Meg

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • Chichi

Love Depp but he is not William Powell, that man was the definition of elegant sophistication.

    • Liz

Yes, sophistication. Powell also imbued Nick with a certain air of quietly intimidating masculinity–when he said he sent all those guys up the river prior to his marriage, you believed him. Depp is a good actor but I can’t picture him as that particular type of rough 30′s/40′s detective. He’s too modern. In my opinion, his Public Enemies portrayal isn’t a good sign of what’s to come.

      • Liz

Let me rephrase that last bit to avoid confusion–it may be a sign of what’s to come, and it’s not a good sign.

  • LP

NO NO NO NO NO. Some things are sacred, and Nick and Nora Charles are firmly in that category.

  • emerald

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I WILL BOYCOT ANY JOHNNY DEPP MOVIE IF HE DOES THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rent the original Depp! There is NO reason to remake it and if you do you probably should pick someone who would actually be a good Nick. NO one should remake it but if you do do it right!

  • Evan

There have always been remakes in Hollywood. The only reason films from the 30′s and 40′s weren’t remakes is because film was still so new. I love it when people make fully formed decisions before seeing a film. I also loved Charlie and the Chocolate Factory…a huge improvement over the goofy Hackman version. The original even changed the film’s name, to promote a candy bar! It was also a huge flop in the theaters. Why wern’t you guys paying to see it then??

    • DFSF

And 90% of those cherished “classics” were remakes of already successful books and plays.

    • Thin Girl

It was Gene Wilder, not Gene Hackman

      • MB

LOL. Gene Hackman as Willy Wonka.

    • Mr Eko

Gene Wilder > Johnny Depp. Hands down – not even close.

  • DFSF

Enough with the hand-wringing hysteria already. The originals are delightful romps but hardly cinematic masterpieces. This type of movie never gets made anymore and Depp’s eccentricities could be just the thing to enliven a stylish comedy/thriller/romance. If it takes the dreaded “remake” to get the movie a greenlight then so be it. Provided the script doesn’t suck, of course. And it’s not directed by Burton.

    • Jeff

Exactly, after all, it’s not “Citizen Kane”. And as someone mentioned, fewer and fewer people are even aware of the originals.

      • Pat

Well, in that case, maybe we could remake “Citizen Kane” with Kim Kardashian and Seth Rogan, for young morons who aren’t familiar with the original and can’t be bothered to watch it on DVD, Blu-Ray, TV or download. These days, there is absolutely no reason not to familiar with the original “Thin Man” other than being brain damaged.

Roger Ebert is right: remake bad movies and try to make them better. Don’t remake classics and ruin them.

      • Channing

Go ahead and try to remake ‘Citizen Kane.’ The Welles estate still maintains creative control over all aspects of the film, including the script, story and title.

    • emjay

Spot on! I think a remake of this sounds wonderful!

  • Beth in MI

I love Johnny Depp but there is only one Nick Charles and that is the wonderful William Powell.

  • Sally

Since I was never a fan of the original, I found it dull, I’m all for a Johnny Depp remake. Johnny is anything but dull. Johnny has pulled off every other role he has ever taken on. I suspect playing a sophisticated detective will be easy for him.

    • lovemyrna

The Thin Man dull? Did you have the sound on? It’s old, not silent. Dull?! Did you find Avatar to be too green?

      • lovemyrna

Or, as Nora herself puts it: “Dull? I’m on the edge of my chair!”

  • Sadie

I adore Johnny Depp but The Thin Man films are such classics I just can’t stand the idea of remakes. It’s a horrible idea, but Hollywood is full of those these days.

  • ObiHave

I’m getting tired of all the high profile roles going to Depp or DiCraprio. This is such a bad idea. I guess Depp’s dropped Burton for Marshall. The bromance is over. I still haven’t forgiven Depp or Burton for that Sweeney Todd debacle.

    • Mr Eko

At least DiCaprio has range. He was phenomenal in the Aviator. Depp just acts quirky is every role.

    • emjay

Sweeney Todd is the best Depp movie!

  • maggie

Jerry Stahl is writing this, so it’s gonna be bad. He’s a CSI writer, and wrote Bad Boys 2. This movie calls for someone who knows how to write sophisticated comedy & mystery. And Johnny Depp is so wrong for the part. They might as well just leave it alone.
