Kate Walsh is joining Emma Watson and Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief) in The Perks of Being a Wallflower, EW has learned exclusively. Walsh will play a smart, Midwestern mother concerned about her shy high school freshman son (Lerman), who is befriended by a party-happy high school senior (Watson). Stephen Chbosky, the author of controversial young adult novel, is directing from his own screenplay; production is currently underway in Pittsburgh. Mae Whitman and Johnny Simmons (both from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), and Nina Dobrev (The CW’s Vampire Diaries) also star in the film.

Awesome. I can’t wait to see it.

  • Jeff

Is it an exclusive when she twitters about it and is seen on set? How about some more exclusives. Dylan McDermott is Charlie’s father. Ezra Miller is Patrick.

    • Jeff

Oh I forgot Paul Rudd is the teacher, Bill.

      • Karrah

Paul Rudd as Bill? That’s awesome!

      • Liz Lemon

Yeah I’m really excited about Paul Rudd. Bill is a serious role and Paul doesn’t get many of those.

I’ve noticed a few months ago that with the major overturn in staff writers, they also started to label everything as EXCLUSIVE.

Logan Lerman? Ugh. Will probably see it for Watson.

  • Alisha

YAY. I love this book and I love her. I cannot wait to see the finished product.

  • Sirka

So cool, I love emma and kate, good ^^

  • Laura

I wonder how Emma’s American accent will sound?

    • Liz Lemon

She’s been working on it for awhile now, so hopefully it will be good. Going to school in America has to have helped a little bit.

  • Karrah

I’m so excited for this movie. My favorite book ever. And since Stephen Chbosky wrote the screenplay and is directing too I’m not worried about my favorite book being ruined by the movie.

    • Buddymoore

I feel the same way. I always thought the book to be unfilmable, but that might not be true with Stephen Chbosky taking the reigns.

    • @Karrah

All the actors keep praising the script, so I really hope the film turns out as great as the book.

  • Chris

Logan Lerman is 19 years old but is playing a high school freshman? Um ok

    • @Chris

He’s got a baby face though, so it will work. He’s only playing 5 years older than he really is.

    • liza

Welcome to Hollywood, Chris. Cory Monteith is, what, 28 and playing a high school junior or senior on Glee? Ben McKenzie was 25 playing a 16 year old on The OC.

    • Annette

Wow I cannot believe that the kids of the early 1990s are considered old now! I mean I was born in 1991 so now I am old! Geez time flys!

    • B.D.

Logan has a baby face… no worries! Hes actually soo hot in person.. but yeah he can play a freshman no problem

  • jessica

I think if this had been made a couple of years back, I would be glad that Logan had been chosen to play Charlie; when he was younger, he would have fit what I imagined really well.

  • alex

hmm, i’m skeptical because this is my favorite book but since stephen is involved i’m not too worried.

does anybody know who Nina Dobrev is playing? can’t even imagine her as any character that’s in the book.

    • Liz Lemon

Nina is playing Charlie’s sister, Candice. Mae Whitman is playing Mary Elizabeth.

      • Val

Mae Whitman makes the perfect Mary Elizabeth.

  • quinn

well the ages of the actors is more than hs but the age differences btw them is about right. the other actors are around 3 or 4 years older than Logan. i dont remember how old Mary Elizabeth was suppose to be?

  • quinn

ps. can not imagine Nina Dobrev being Logan Lehman’s older sister. and Emma watson being a hard partying experienced senior??

  • pahammer

Precocious, stuck up, narcissistic, no talent b!tch. Still… at least Emma Watson is in it.

  • Rebekah

This sounds great! I am excited to see Emma post-Harry Potter.

  • Kristen

I suppose I should read the book before watching the movie, but the cast sounds great.
