'The Hunger Games' lands its Cato and Clove: All tributes cast

Tributes complete! Alexander Ludwig (Race to Witch Mountain) and Isabelle Fuhrman (Orphan) have been cast as District 2 tributes Cato and Clove in the movie adaptation of The Hunger Games. They are the fiercest duo of the dreaded Careers alliance. Cato in particular is a nasty piece of work, and perhaps Katniss’ biggest competition in the reality TV fight to the death. A hulking, fiercely competitive specimen, he’s out for blood. His girl counterpart Clove is an expert knife-thrower and takes tremendous glee in her kills.

Ludwig and Fuhrman, who both boast longer resumes than the majority of newcomers previously cast as tributes, join an impressive bench alongside the likes of Jennifer Lawrence, Stanley Tucci, Wes Bentley, Elizabeth Banks, and, as of yesterday, Woody Harrelson. In terms of major characters, that leaves only the casting of Cinna, Katniss’ beloved stylist, to be revealed. The Hunger Games goes into production this month and will be in theaters March 23, 2012.

    • Aaron

SERIOUSLY!!! Just the movie poster alone gave me night terrors.

    • Strepsi

Yes, THE ORPHAN is a really underrated, nasty little thriller.

Who will they cast as buttercup?
      a) a very old geriatric cat that is also a great actor because after all in movies and tv old cats always play kittens.
      b) a red or black cat with acting experience and awards nominations because after all color is not important they will dye its hair and acting is more important. Plus it’s impossible to cast a yellow cat that also has acting talent.
      c) a black old cat that became famous not because his acting but its singing but had a 5 minute role in a movie and gary ross liked his acting.
      d) Cate blanchet! She is an oscar winner actress and because of that she can pull off anything. If you don’t think she is the right one watch all of her previous movies. She even played BOB DYLAN!
      e) a yellow mashed-in nose, half of one ear missing, eyes the color of rotting squad.
      f) a squirrel or a dog because there is one thing called makeup and there’s also Hollywood magic.
G)None of the above they will just cut out Buttercup because he is a minor role.

WHOA! I’m not surprised that they got Ludwig, since he’s an Attractive Young Actor of the Moment, but I did not see Fuhrman coming at all! And I’m psyched! She was creepy as all heck in Orphan! This should be good.

Imagine that, there ARE natural blonde haired, blue-eyed, medium height good male actors. So we didn’t have to end up with shrimp boy who looks like jennifer Lawrence’s creepy younger brother and sleeps with nasty Vanessa Hudgens as Peeta. Thanks Lionsgate way to screw up the Peeta casting.

      • Miranda

Um actually Alexander Ludwig WAS considered for Peeta. But he obviously fit the bill of Cato better. Calm down Josh is an AMAZING actor. I can’t wait until he proves you wrong. I’m SO happy with all the casting. If you love THG books you should trust Suzanne Collins. She casted this movie too you know..

      • Jane

Actually it wasn’t Lionsgate that casted Peeta it was the author Suzanne Collins herself. Just thought you should know that.

  • lefty

I always pictured Cato a bit stockier, a la Viktor Krum, but seeing as how he’s only in the first movie it doesn’t matter too much. I’m just ready for them to film and to see the movie!

    • Marvin3O

me too! that’s exactly how I pictured Cato!! this guy doesn’t look like that at all!! he looks more like Peeta!

      • Joanne

They haven’t bothered casting due to physical type for the lead roles, so why bother now?

      • librahwk

He was actually considered for the role of Peeta before they cast Josh. I was concerned he wasn’t bulky enough to play cato, but then I did a google search that proved me wrong

      • Miranda

Alexander is too muscular for Peeta. Google search it

    • kate middleton

I also pictured a Viktor Krum type, but I am fine with Ludwig. I think he can bring it – and I think Isabelle will be great. She’s younger than I envisioned Clove, but I know she can do sadistic and creepy from Orphan.

      • Pepe

So will they not be starting prccitae this weekend 3/10/2012 as the confirmation email stated. I am just a little confused and need clarification which was not provided in your previous message. I think the above calendar is a great help for us to keep track of upcoming events. Thanks-Demetria

    • Nikk

yea that’s how i pictured him too!!

  • whatevs

Holy cow, she’s gotten big since The Orphan.

  • Kate

Excellent, now lets all hope that Cillian Murphy joins in as Cinna. He is really the only one I ever pictured for the role. And I would think he might like a role that when the second movie would come around, the audience will either be shocked into silence, screaming at the screen or just weeping and he is constantly referenced and the memory of him keeps Katniss going at some low points.

    • lefty

He seems creepy as all hell to me. I’d prefer someone else.

    • Tonya

He’s too old (IMHO) Cinna was described as unusually young looking – I think Cinna should be under 25.

    • AliB

Cilliian Murphy would be really good although creepy, but I always pictured Cinna to be like Cristian Soriano(sp?) from Project Runway lol

    • Nikk

I LOVE CILLIAN MURPHY AND HE IS NOT TOO OLD! he’s still fairly young lookin. if not him then jude law or matt bomer. and NEWS FLASH-just cuz he’s a fashion designer doesn’t make him gay. all he did was wear gold guyliner or mascara (i dont have the book in front of me)

  • Tonya

    Love it!

    Now give us Cinna!

  • Ryan

There’s also President Snow who needs to be cast, right? He has a minor role in the first book but he is obviously crucial to the entire series. So he still needs to be cast as well. On another note: MATT BOMER FOR CINNA.

  • Laura

They seem like pretty good choices, especially Fuhrman.
I want to know who will be Cinna! And President Snow!

    • Nikk

i kinda agree i hope ludwig beefs up for the movie but the picks seem sufficient. i mean i cant complain.

  • crispy

    LOL at “hulking”

  • LC

Well, I always pictured Cato as a big, ugly brute, but easy on the eyes works as well, though it’ll be sadder to see him get torn apart.

    • Rachel :)

ik!! I love Alexander as Cato, but it’s gonna be hard to not cry when he is torn apart!!!!! :( And with Isabelle dying in his arms, this movie better come with a box of tissue. xD

    • johnny toler

i allways imagined taylor lockner as cato

  • Marcy Runkle

    Nick Adams for Cinna!!

  • Nadia

Holy misfire, Batman. That kid is way too scrawny for Cato. I really was thinking a Max Adler type. 2nd misfire (after the denial of Kristen Chenowith who *was* Effie), movie casting. Please let this not suck.

    • well

he should have plenty of time to buff up for the part..

      • Jasmine

He actually is already pretty buff.

      • amy

@jasmine. not to be mean but while i agree he’s buff it’s more of like in a pretty boy way. not a menacing, intimidating competitor like cato

      • Miranda

Alex is pretty buff. He has like perfectly sculpted abs lol

    • kate middleton

I also was picturing someone like Max Adler. But I think Alex Ludwig will be alright. If you look at his IMDB, he has some shirtless pics and he’s surprisingly ripped. Not much time to bulk up since filming is May – August, but I think he can pull it off.

    • amy

he’s buff but like in a pretty boy way. not a menacing, intimidating competitor like cato

  • Jenn

I hope no one who hasn’t read the books isn’t reading these comments since some of you are kinda spoiling them.

    • Jenn

*is* reading these comments I mean.

    • ron swanson

If someone hadn’t read the books and was trolling the comments, they’d just be asking for spoilers. Read the comments at your own risk.

Please invite your friends to play on your Little League team, and consider stepping up to be a head coach!

  • Shayla

Not who I would pick (more tan for Clove and brown hair and more tan skin for Cato) But they can probably spray tan or something…

    • amy

where did it say that either of them were tan?

    • Rachel :)

Who said they were tan? This isn’t the Jersey Shore. I think they are perfect. Please watch Isabelle in Orphan… you will change your mind. And Alex is perfect for Cato.

  • Josh

Michael Urie for Cinna, Eric Roberts for President Snow

    • lefty

I think Urie is too old. And Eric Roberts?!?! haha not to be a negative nelly…thanks for contributing. I respectfully disagree.

      • lulu

i agree lefty…especially about roberts. snow is supposed to have hair as white as…snow! and that guy doesn’t look at all evil and i know he is an actor bt he doesn’t look like he could pull it off. and he’s not old enough..you cant gray someone and call him old

    • iggy

      Like both of those!

    • kate middleton

I hadn’t thought of Michael Urie, that’s a decent suggestion. I also like Cillian Murphy, but I fear they wouldn’t be able to get him for this.

For President Snow – I like Malcolm McDowell, Patrick Stewart or Zeljiko Ivanek. Looking forward to seeing who it is!

      • k23

How about the guy who played Jack’s dad on Lost? Can’t remember the actor’s name…
