The 'Snow White' shuffle: Who will be the fairest secondary to who will be first

Now this is getting interesting: after a whirlwind game of  who’s-it-going-to-be, Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman, with Kristen Stewart as Snow White, Chris Hemsworth as the huntsman, Charlize Theron as the evil queen, and Sam Claftin as the prince, now has a new release date of June 1, 2012. That’s more than six months earlier than its original release date in late December, and a good four weeks ahead of its rival, Relativity’s untitled Snow White moviewhich stars Julia Roberts, Lily Collins, Armie Hammer and Nathan Lane, and has a scheduled June 29, 2012 release date.

Universal Chairman Adam Fogelson and Co-Chairman Donna Langley said in a joint statement, “As [director] Rupert [Sanders] and [producer] Joe [Roth] were finalizing casting and preproduction of Snow White and the Huntsman, we realized that the ambitious and fully-formed world they had promised was blowing away all expectations. We’re thrilled that Universal will be bringing this singular version of a timeless story almost seven months earlier than anticipated.”

Relativity was silent on the move, declining to comment.

Of course, this isn’t the first time studios have had dueling projects of a similar nature. Remember when Tombstone was released December 24, 1993 with Wyatt Earp in theaters June 24, 1994? Or 1995’s Scottish period film face-off between Rob Roy and Braveheart? Deep Impact and Armageddon, which both dealt with earth-threatening objects falling from space were released within two months of each other in 1998. Though Armageddon topped its rival at the box office despite debuting two months after Deep Impact, conventional wisdom suggests that it pays to be first.

Well, I don’t care which one comes out first. I’ll watch whichever one doesn’t have Kristen Stewart’s dead eyed, constipated ferret-face on it.

    • sucks

      • JerryK

Because you are well acquanted with both a famous actress AND the ew commentor “demented?” You get around, sucks.

      • mel

Hey! Don’t compare KS to a ferret. They are pretty cute.

    • kate middleton

Agreed. No interest in seeing anything K-Stew is in.

      • C Men

I’d like to be in K-Stew.

    • dawnish

I wotn watch anythign with the appalling Kristen Stewart in. That dead eye stammering act is ridiculous. She has no screen presence or charisma and is very cold and wooden.

    • brandi

shes a terrible actress. And yes agreed about her eyes. If eyes are the windows to the soul, her soul is dead.

      • Alex

        How wrong u r!

      • katie

Yeah – you’re really right about her eyes. I think she looks much prettier as Bella with brown eyes. She’s definitely got the dead in the eyes look.

    • Liz Lemon

The one with Julia Roberts, Nathan Lane, and Armie Hammer has a more appealing cast. I have a feeling that one is going to go for a more dark humor approach.
The one with Charlize will probably turn out something like Hardewick’s “Robin Hood.” So no thanks.

      • LL

And I find Julia Roberts unappealing. And Nathan Lane annoying.
Armie Hammer is someone I like a lot but not enough to see that movie.

      • SAZ

Liz Lemon, did you mean Hardwicke’s Little Red Riding Hood? If so, I agree!

      • Liz Lemon

        @SAZ: Yep. That’s what I meant. lol.

  • whatevs

I guess it would be interesting to see if a cast of secondary characters can salvage what the main character is unable to bring to it.

  • Mel B

Conventional Wisdom suggests that when you insert a mega Tween star into the fray, that movie will do well regardless.

    • Ace

That 9/11 movie Pattinson did (I don’t even remember the name of it) begs to differ.

    • kate middleton

I disagree. Conventional wisdom suggests that a mega tween movie will do well in the box office. When you take those stars out of that film franchise, anything can happen. I also don’t think Kristen Stewart would be a “mega tween star”. I don’t think anyone sees Twilight because of her – it’s either bc they’ve read the books, like the story, or like Pattinson.

      • Rae

Kristen is the only reason I watch the Twilight films. So your statement is incorrect.
Not everyone is in love with the male leads.

      • kate middleton

No – my statement is not incorrect. I said “I don’t think anyone sees Twilight bc of Kristen Stewart.” That’s my opinion and I stand by it.

      • Amused

LOL. You don’t think anyone sees Twilight because of Kristen and Rae does. Hence, your statement is wrong.

      • kate middleton

No – I just think Rae is a Twihard who would see Twilight no matter who played Bella. I’ve never met anyone who considers K Stew a box office draw.

      • Lexa

Then you’re hanging out with the wrong people.

      • Rae

Nope. Wrong again. Not a ‘Twihard’… actually couldn’t care less. If Kristen wasn’t cast in Twilight, I wouldn’t even be remotely interested in the series. But keep assuming and keep being wrong!

      • Kat

Seriously, get off kate’s back. Her statment is not incorrect because it is an opinion. By saying she thinks, it makes her statment an opinion. She didn’t state it was fact. And in my case, that opinion of hers is correct.

Just as it is my opinion that Kristen Stewart is a talentless hack with the acting range of a teaspoon. And she is the reason I wont watch Twilight.

And Kate is not hanging out with the wrong people because she has good taste and can recognize real talent when she sees it. Not media and tween hype.

If I hung out with anyone who said “I only watch Twilight cuz I luv the Kristen Stewart. She is like totally amazzzzing” I would promptly slap them in the face and refuse towatch a movie with them ever again.

  • The Dude

This seems like a bold move whose purpose is to muscle the Tarsem-directed movie to a later release. I get that this is all about business, but it seems like a sleazy move on Universal’s part.

    • Stacie

      Tarsem, really?!?! Seeing it.

      • The Dude

Yep, the Julia Roberts-project (as of now) is to be directed by Tarsem, director of “The Fall” and this year’s “Immortals.” So, at the very least, we’ll know the movie will look good.

      • Terre

        The Immortals trailer was horrible.

      • Rems

The immortals trailer looks bad and they’re still doing reshoots.

    • Liz Lemon

Doesn’t the last twilight film come out during that summer? I think that’s what inspired the move to be honest.

  • Heather

    Chris Hemsworth?! I’m IN!!!

    • steph

I know. Kristen Stewart made me go “ew” but Chris Hemsworth made me go “yum”.

      I’m conflicted…

  • claire

I will watch kristen stewarts snow white i like her and her work keep it real kristen glad you not plastic

    • Joe

I hope Eglish isn’t your first language. If it is, the education system in America has failed you.

      • noa

Joe wake up.. It’s not english test here

      • @noa

Luckily for you, since you would obviously flunk, too!

    • jodipo

      not plastic, more like wood

      • katie

        ^ LOL

      • izzie

I wish woods were as talented and genuine as she is

      • Dwell Spot

  • ouch

haters commenting this soon! who knew. perhaps you should wait to see the trailer Before posting any of your bad attitudes opinions? thank you. the cast looks good ill just have to wait and see if its worth it

    • mel

Just saying that pretty much everything that KS has been in, she has not changed fro her Bella character.

      • Noelle

Joan Jett and a teen stripper had nothing in common with Bella.

      • @Noelle

and yet, her acting was exactly the same. That’s the point.

      • Noelle

I disagree with you on that, she was especially good in The Runaways and most respected critics agree with me.

      • Big Walt

She was very different (and much better) in her early/kid roles. It’s like more famous she got the more she thought she was too cool to try or something.

    • Dwell Spot

You can call it hating and “bad attitudes opinions” (do you know how to write?) but the whole point is to express your opinion. If everyone was lying and being positive, these comments would be boring indeed! Obviously there are people who love Kristen, people who dislike her, and people who flat-out don’t care. Let them say what they will. You do.

  • Justin Beaver

We should expect seven of the following recognisable actors with comedic experience to play the Seven Dwarfs – Doc, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, Bashful, Sneezy and Dopey – who have a scene where they all sing “Heigh-Ho” from the original 1937 classic film:

Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, Ricky Gervais, Simon Pegg, Eddie Izzard, Rowan Atkinson, Owen Wilson, Jack Black, Rob Schneider, Jeremy Piven, Mike Myers, Jim Carrey, William Shatner, Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin, Tim Allen, Chevy Chase, John Goodman, Billy Connolly, Danny DeVito, Robin Williams, George Lopez, John Cleese, Steve Coogan.

Hi ho! Hi ho! Hi ho! Hi ho! Hi ho!
    Hi ho! Hi ho!
It’s home from work we go (whistles)

    • Liz Lemon

Lol. I forgot about the dwarves.
That’s going to be interesting to see how they cast those roles. I think the Julia Roberts version will have the easiest time attracting 7 actors.

      • katie

Yeah, I wonder if they’ll even have dwarves?

      • Big Walt

Verne Troyer, Warwick Davis, and Peter Dinklage just cursed you!

  • tyler

kristens snow white for me film sounds great sam and chris and charlie is another reason to watch love the cast

    • Tom

They are called periods. It makes your rambling a little more bearable.

      • abbie

Periods don’t make you any less of an insufferable prick.

  • Teuta

Yeah, when are they finally going to announce the casting for the seven dwarves in these movies? I hope they do cast famous comedians!

  • paula

i will watch kristen stewart what ever she is in well done on your miff award for wttr

    • sucks

Yeah i have no issue with the other Snow White at all, but Kristen is my girl and Chris and Sam are up and coming actors, while Charlize will have a different type of role than usual.

      Bring it on

  • jenny

Really excited for SWATH. The casting ups and downs have been a pain, but I love the cast they ended up with. Thrilled at the earlier release date.

  • JLS

I’ll see the Kristen Stewart/Chris Hemsworth one, but I won’t pay to see two of them. I am happy about the earlier release date. Can’t wait to see it!!!

  • kate middleton

Well, I don’t think Chris Hemsworth has even signed….so this seems pretty early for a release date. I bet it gets pushed back – this has problems written all over it since Viggo and Hugh Jackman dropped out. No one wants to work with Kristen Stewart on the crappy Snow White movie.

    • Noelle

Chris Hemsworth officially signed last Friday, look at the industry reports.

    • LL

It was reported that Chris has signed on.
And neither Viggo or Hugh dropped out as they had never signed on. In negotiations, I believe they couldn’t agree on salary with Viggo. And Hugh was in talks for another movie.

Personally, think Chris Hemsworth with be awesome as well as Kristen Stewart.
Definitely will see Universal’s version and stay far away from the Julia Robert’s one.

  • laura

I would have watched if Viggo had been in it but without him, sorry, no interest. Kristen Stewart is just not appealing in the least. Nor really is the other Snow White…Julia Roberts as the wicked queen? Really?

    • Liz Lemon

Julia Roberts probably took the role, because people didn’t think she could do it. She’s America’s sweetheart and usually plays the heroine in films. I think that right there is enough to interest me. I would love to see Julia play an evil Queen. It’s a good sign that they’re not casting too many obvious actors.

      • ana

what ever im still at ks .we see who is the first come out.hemsworth.stewart are definetely fun.
