'The Lone Ranger': Armie Hammer cast in title role, with Johnny Depp as Tonto

Johnny Depp has found his Lone Ranger. Armie Hammer, the 24-year-old actor who portrayed the Winklevoss twins in last year’s The Social Network, will play the masked hero in Disney’s adaptation of The Lone Ranger, according to Hammer’s rep. Depp, who has said that he’s part Cherokee or Creek Indian, had already been cast as the title character’s Native American companion Tonto. Gore Verbinski, who directed Depp in Rango and the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies, will helm the film. Jerry Bruckheimer is producing the project, which Disney could release as early as next year.

Unlike in the iconic 1950s TV show, Depp’s Tonto will be more than the Lone Ranger’s mere sidekick. “I remember watching [the show] as a kid and going: ‘Why is the f—ing Lone Ranger telling Tonto what to do?’” Depp previously told EW. “I knew Tonto was getting the unpleasant end of the stick here. When the idea came up [for the movie], I started thinking about Tonto and what could be done in my own small way try to reinvent the relationship, to attempt to take some of the ugliness thrown on the Native Americans — not only in The Lone Ranger, but the way Indians were treated throughout history of cinema — and turn it on its head.”

Hammer will next be seen in Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar as Clyde Tolson, the FBI official who some infer was romantically involved with FBI director J. Edgar Hoover (Leonardo DiCaprio). The biopic is scheduled for a December release.

I wonder if there’s going to be a scene in the movie where The Lone Ranger trys to sue Tonto for inventing “Smoke Signals”? LOL

    • J

When people LOL at they’re own joke it’s a sure sign the joke isn’t funny

shocked a big heroic all-American icon character role didn’t go to a Brit or Aussie. anyways, he was awesome in social network.

    • Big Walt

Why? What big heroic all-American icon character role has gone to a Brit or Aussie lately? Superman I guess?

      • Student

        Thor, Green Lantern, Superman, Wolverine

      • hatemonk

Thor, Superman, and Wolverine aren’t American. & Ryan Reynolds/Green Lantern is.

      • Big Walt

Ryan Reynolds is Canadian but not a Brit or Aussie. Wolverine is Canadian, Thor is a Norse God, Superman, while not born here, I’ll give you.

      • barack

        dumbass.

      • dave

        Which one?

  • Lizzie

Armie Hammer is gonna be a HUGE movie star! I just have that feeling about him. He’s in one of the Snow White films aswell isn’t he?

    • Liz Lemon

Yeah. He’s playing the Prince in the Lily Collins/Julia Roberts/Nathan Lane version.

      • C Men

Is Nathan Lane the evil queen?

      • Liz Lemon

Lol. NO, but it would amazeballs if he was.

      • RJM

And that version looks the best, thanks to Lily Collins. (The other one is the Kristen Stewart one, right?)

      • Mariyam

I have a quick question. I just ctmelpoed a marathon using the A progression. I have been doing the workouts from the main sight to improve my strength, but I am going to start training for another marathon in January for the race in May. Should I start with the beginning of the C progression or or back to the A ? How long is the C progression? Thanks again for any help you can give me!

  • Avie

Great casting, and the people involved make me think it’ll at least be a fun film…we’ll see I guess.

    • wiseguy

It’s gonna be a revisionist version which will be way different from the original. As Johnny Depp mentioned, he would not play Tonto as a second fiddle to the Lone Ranger. More likely there will be a reversal in the roles with Tonto calling the shots behind the scenes while the Lone Ranger seems to be in charge publicly since in those days, the white men always issue the orders. This won’t be your grandfather’s Lone Ranger.

      • Brett

Your version sounds like the recent “Green Hornet” flop where the main character was a comic foil for Kato, the real hero. We all saw how well THAT worked out.

      • dave

Meh, it made money. I’m sure there aren’t too many complaints from the financiers.

  • katie

Interesting. I would have pictured it going to someone older – like in their 30s at least.
Armie’s great though – I think he’s going to be a huge star.

    • MockingbirdGirl

I was pulling for Timothy Olyphant. Damn that man is sexy.

      • katie

Oh, he definitely would have been great. Timothy is amazing – LOVE Justified.

      • Mark

A man who plays a US Marshall being cast to play a Texas Ranger is what you call typecasting. Actors try to avoid such things, so as glad as I’m sure he is that you’re a fan I’m pretty sure he’d like you to have a little more imagination when thinking of him in different roles.

      • Brett

Olyphant would eclipse Depp in the “charisma” department. I’m sure the casting people recognized that fact.

  • Michelle

Now all that’s needed is for Armie to be cast as Finnick in Catching Fire and all will be right in the world.

    • katie

He would be a great Finnick! Ian Somerhalder’s been at the top of my list too.

    • Jenn

You are so, so very right.

    • tupac

      you’re weird.

  • stickittotheman

I can see the direction this version will take: LR will be a white dumbass and Tonto will be the wise, hip, spiritual native. Welcome to the 21st century where racism is bad…except when directed at whitey.

    • Trenton

      Dumbest. Comment. Ever.

    • John

      I completely agree.

    • Mark

Sucks when the shoe is on the other foot, doesn’t it?

      • C Men

It just sucks because it’s so false. At least when white people are racist it’s based on facts.

      • Brett

Right. Because in the dictionary, “racism” is clearly defined as “white people discriminating against people of other ethnicities.”

  • Liz Lemon

Yay! Go Armie. It’s nice to see him getting so many great roles.

    • Patriciia

Interval swim this morning. 8x100m on 2:30- 1:55,1:58,2:00,2:02,2:02,2:01,2:02,1:59 min. Started out too fast. After two sets, I got into my face and felt good rest of the way. Crossfit WOD shlroty after; Kip Pull-Ups, 20 inch box, Hang Leg Raise, and Tuck Jumps subbed- 11:55 minutes. Did lotta mobility work after school today and feel pretty good.

  • Trenton

From a small little arc on Gossip Girl to a mega hollywood indie film to a Tent Pole blockbuster and the cusp of being A List star….not a bad 3 years in hollywood. Has to be one of the fastest rises ever

    • Liz Lemon

I think he started as a drug dealer on Desperate Housewives actually. But I agree. Very impressive.

    • wiseguy

Actually Armie Hammer was cast to play Batman in the now defunct Justice League live-action movie. Due to Christopher Nolan’s objections over this project conflicting with his on-going Batman trilogy, Warner Brothers decided to shelve the Justice League project entirely even though the production preparations had already started in Australia. Maybe he can be cast as Batman again after Nolan’s Batman trilogy ends.

      • knightawe

Weak choice for Lone Ranger and even weaker choice for Batman. Depp wanted a patsy and he got one. An icon deserted in a pathetic attempt at reverse racism with the ranger being the stooge per Depp’s expressed intentions. The actual result of the Lone Ranger film is an insult to an American Icon that was a step toward a promising brotherhood message. What a waste and poor casting. And yes, a full Native American should have been used and a serious director.

    • Abdulwahab

Awesome stuff. I don’t have a gym to to the Friday WOD but I do have a bar and weight at my house to do the ME or DE part. Can I just sud in CF WODs myelsf? Lets say 100 burpees for time or maybe some GWOD stuff, hand stand holds and hollow rocks. Thoughts please .

  • Mary

LOL Funny how all of a sudden, Depp is Native-American. How convenient he just remembered it, eh?

    • Christie

He’s said it several times throughout the years.

    • amyc

Get your facts straight, Mary. He’s always proudly claimed his American Indian heritage.

    • C Men

Any D-Bag who wants to think they’re cool and spiritual claims they have Native American bloodlines. I’m sure Angelina Jolie and Sean Penn claim it too.

      • steve cannon

perfect assesment of existing nonsence in OUR world i love it you are right on the money.jay silverheels if i am not mistaken was full bloded mohawk and from canada.tonto was originally a patawatamee i hope i spelled it right.the radio show was from detroit and that tribe is native to michigan andf the area.

      • Barack Boobama

        I too… am … Native American.

    • Brett

He’s said that he’s part Native American for years. A lot of my friends in elementary school claimed the same thing, and we’re all around Johnny’s age. Of course, there’s no proof of it. It’s just something cool to claim about yourself for some people.

    • James

The strawed brings me to a deluxe room in the 10th floor of the Seaview. Getting into my room, I?m attracted immediately by the warm and full of beauty cabin, I sme

  • Jason

Maybe Depp should be more outraged that he’s playing an Indian, instead of, you know, an Indian.

    • steve cannon

i do not want depp in the role as good as he may be i want an indian actor for that role.and if they are woried about the racisat angle get tonto to present one face to the outside world to be seen but not seen and a more articulate face in private and among their friend in law enfocemnt and the military, for those who are who know something about the characters they were after all under cover.

      • C Men

They should get the guy who plays Timmy on Rules of Engagement.

  • Joe

I agree. They should’ve cast a big star in the Ranger role and let an actual Native American actor do Tonto. Or have Lou Diamond Phillip do it, since he’s the same age as Depp, and then have a box office draw as the Ranger. As it is, this will be yet another Depp supporting role that will overwhelm the film. Watch all the marketing of the “lone Ranger” film be all about Tonto…

    • Shannon

I get your point, and as much as I like Lou, he’s nowhere near the actor of Depp.

    • chris

Is Lou native American? Isn’t he part Asian?

      • C Men

        Phillipino isn’t he?

      • Seydou

Given the demands of the 3S seludche between CrossFit and sport-specific workouts, your rest may not translate into a traditional full rest day (other than Thursday). If you need more rest, then take it. Recovery should be a priority and it’s why there is an option to perform S C Recovery in lieu of a workout; it’ll help your recovery if you’re fried.

    • Jenn

I think Tonto is actually the lead in this film. The Lone Ranger is going to be a comedic anti-hero, and Tonto will save the day.

  • Inara

So, his family has been told he is a little bit Native American, they think? I think this realization is a very convenient way to preemptively deflect any complaints about Hollywood once again using white actors to play minority roles…

  • Phillip

Hollywood does it again. What’s next? Angelina remembering that she’s half Asian in order for her to play an action-heavy version of Mulan? Tom Cruise discovering there’s some Puerto Rican blood in his vein, just as he is cast to play legendary Newyorican poet Miguel Pinero?
