'Oz: The Great and Powerful' gets release date: March 8... 2013

Hold on to your ruby slippers. Disney confirmed to EW that Sam Raimi’s upcoming prequel to The Wizard of Oz, called Oz: The Great and Powerful won’t be flying into theaters until March 8, 2013.

The film, which is set to be released in Disney Digital 3-D and begins filming this summer, will feature James Franco an an oil salesman who finds himself far beyond the yellow brick road and must face off with a trio of evil witch sisters (including Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz) to gain control of the Land of Oz. Michelle Williams is also attached to the flick and will play Glinda the Good Witch. But, if you’re too excited at the prospect for a chance to revisit the Wizard, rest easy: There’s a bevy of Oz projects on the horizon, including the animated Dorothy of Oz which features the voice of Lea Michele and the CG/stop-motion Oz Wars from Mike Johnson the co-director of Corpse Bride.

    Wizrd. I love you, Aly!

The Wizard of Oz is one of the most (if not the most) well known movies in history. Why on earth people feel the need to remake it or have sequels and prequels to it is beyond me. The movie is a classic. Leave it alone.

You do know that it was based on a book, right? And that that book is one of a whole series?

Apparently not known to you, are the Oz books by L. Frank Baum. He wrote more than just The Wizard of Oz. There’s a whole mythology to play with beyond the Judy Garland movie.

Yes I’m aware of the books but i thought one or two of the studios were trying to do a full on remake of the movie.

I seriously hope they will be releasing it in both 2D and 3D because I really want to see it, and if it’s 3D only, I’ll have to skip it.

I honestly have no complaints about this (other than the reason their being made is exclusively due to the sucess of Alice in Wonderland) but I REALLY just want them to adapt Wicked already! I thought it’d happen after Hairspray and Mama Mia for sure, hopefully these will lead to it being made!

Where is “Wicked: The Movie”?? WHHHHHHHHEEEEEERE !?!? and when?

sad. Too bad they couldn’t just use the books, instead of making a “new and improved” version.
