The Walt Disney Company has withdrawn its application to trademark the term, “SEAL Team 6,” according to the Wall Street Journal. SEAL Team 6 was the unit that successfully stormed Osama bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan and ultimately killed the terrorist leader. A spokesperson for Disney told the Journal that the company switched course “out of deference to the Navy.”

The fact that they even tried has to be a breathtakingly bad PR move. What were they thinking???
Agreed. If they wanted to show deference to the Navy, why on earth did they even think of trademarking a popular name for a group of them? Plus, it’s just dumb. It’s as silly as trying to trademark Area 51 while at the same time being totally offensive.
Depends on what they were going to use it for. Maybe a movie or TV show? It has a certain ring to it…
In other words, exploit and make a bunch of money off a group of heroes who have to remain anonymous. Walt Disney must be spinning in his grave.
Greed, simple greed was what they were thinking, as usual. The navy is just lucky they didn’t pick “Mickey”as the codeword for Bin Laden or Disney would be sueing them for trademark infringement.

It’s stupid yes, but let’s not jump all over Disney (and I am by no means a Disney fan). This is a common practice. Good on them for doing the right thing though.
