Orlando Bloom joins 'Hobbit,' has not aged, according to Peter Jackson

Orlando Bloom was there and is now back again: Peter Jackson announced via his Facebook page today that Bloom, who portrayed Legolas in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, is the latest to join The Hobbit. “Ten years ago, Orlando Bloom created an iconic character with his portrayal of Legolas,” Jackson wrote. “I’m excited to announce today that we’ll be revisiting Middle Earth with him once more. I’m thrilled to be working with Orlando again. Funny thing is, I look older — and he doesn’t! I guess that’s why he makes such a wonderful elf.”

This latest casting announcement means The Hobbit is turning into one helluva Lord of the Rings reunion. Cate Blanchett, Elijah Wood, Andy Serkis, and Ian McKellen are all on board to star in the adaptation of the J.R.R. Tolkien book.

awww yeahhh. it’s good that they have some eye candy in there now.

    • Allie

Except The Hobbit already has Richard Armitage and Aidan Turner in it, so it’s not really lacking in the eye candy department.

      • R

        Mmmmm, Richard Armitage.

      • Daphne

mmmm what R said about Richard Armitage… mmmm

      • Kirra

Aidan Turner is absolute sexiness. I started watching Being Human after I saw he was cast in The Hobbit. I love him! LOL.

      • Mellissa

Funny thing is Aiden Turner isn’t really that hot. But he is dang sexy.

      • Kim E

My anticipation for this movie is so great and it’s all due to the fact that Richard Armitage is appart of it. He’s one of the most handsome/sexiest actors! Listen to him speak and you’ll know what I’m referring to, his voice is very sexy.

    • deedeedragons

He hasn’t aged….. Nor has he become a better actor.

      • Lily

        Totally agree

    • Lily

Orlando Bloom is not eye candy. Men need to have a little meat on ‘em bones.

    • Elaine

Richard Armitage is much much hotter than Orlando Bloom, and he is a talented actor too.

  • Europa

I beg your pardon but Richard Armitage is already bringing the sexy to Hobbit. With Orlando there will be a surfeit of hotties; always a good thing.

  • Mark Twain

    Legolas=YAWN….. Hobbit=YEAH~

  • Misspriss_1

I’m glad that OB is on board for the Hobbit.. He IS Legolas!! Are they going to get Viggo too? It will be nice once the entire series is completed. This has always been a very good story…

    • Pippi

Legolas is not a character of the hobbitt, burhey they are also bringing Frodo and Saruman… What the heck let’s bring Viggo back, too.

    • AB

Viggo does not need to be a part of this movie. Aragorn’s character is not in the book.
      This isn’t TLOTR reunion show.

    • bobbi

I agree with you. I want Viggo back.

  • Anne

So excited about this. Really hoping that they are going to put him in the Battle of Five Armies, and give us another spectacular moment of Legolas super-human badassery.

    • ihtfpaeoh

yeah! I love where he takes down the ‘oliphant’ in LOTR!

  • Liz Lemon

I had the biggest crush on Legolas back in the day. It will be great to see him on-screen again.

    • dee dee1

Great news. I loved him in the LOTR movies. It will be good to see him as Legolas once more.

    • Zimmerman

      good god liz lemon.

    • Andy

I did too and then Orlando Bloom really blew up and embraced his own douchery and now I can’t seperate Legolas from OB and it really tainted the character! Haha! I’ve always had a thing for men who can use a bow & arrow.

  • Zebediah

I’ve been thinking all along that Legolas would logically fit into the story, even though he wasn’t mentioned by name in the book – if I remember correctly, the elf-king that Bilbo and the dwarves meet was Legolas’ father.

Frodo and Galadriel, on the other hand, are a bit extraneous.

    • Ashley

thank you. you are the only person i’ve seen in the beggining comments that wasn’t all about eye candy ( don’t get me wrong OB is HOT!!) but brought up the point at least with frodo. Galadriel would be in it because she’s one of the original group who had the rings ( remember their is more than one the one from LOTR is only Sourons{spelling?}) so she would fit and maybe Legolas if they show him with his father but frodo? frodo doesn’t come into the story until Bilbo’s travels are over. so unless the show like a flashforward at the end he makes no sense. don’t get me wrong i loved elijah wood but lets not get too drastic with the changes here.

      • Color Me Impressed

Frodo is being used in the films’ framing device. The beginning and the end of each (?) film will feature Elijah supposedly reading out of There and Back Again.

  • Kirsten

I wonder if most of these characters will be more in the second movie, since they didn’t appear in The Hobbit. As was mentioned, though, the elf-king is Legolas’ father, so you could easily see him with a cameo in that one, but I’m hoping for a bit more.

  • Lars Skaarsvold

    Orlando Bloom is a hobbit.

    • nancy

Then he should feel right at home with this character.

      • Liz Lemon

LOL. What? He plays an elf not a hobbit.

  • jj6

frodo is only appearing to read from bilbo’s book. Richard Armitage and Aidan Turner are going to be dwarfified so I don’t know how sexy they will end up being, gimli wasn’t exactly a sexy beast.

  • tipsy

I hope there`s no next. The Hobbit sahouldn`t be reunion movie. They brought back 2 characters who fit into timeline (Galdriel, legolas) and one that is big stretching (Frodo). Enough is enough. There are wodnerful original characters in the book so they should stop pretending as if The Hobbit cannot succeed without LOTR inserts.

    • Mellissa

Gandolf most certainly is not a stretch in the Hobbit.

      • tipsy

Excuse me? Gandalf is in the book. So is Elrond. They are original Hobbit characters like Bilbo because they existed before LOTR. I`m talking about the return of LOTR characters who have nothing to do with the Hobbit timeline or were kids (Aragorn in case some Viggo maniacs who think he didn`t age extremly visibly in the meantime and can pass for 10 years old).

      • @tipsy

While I don’t think that they should bring Aragorn into the Hobbit (or that it should be split into 2 movies), he does have elf blood in him and is “blessed with an unusually long life,” so he would still look the same in the Hobbit as he did in LOTR.

  • sarah

I’ve forgotten, have they confirmed Hugo Weaving? Elrond is in the book (while Galadriel and Frodo sure aren’t.

    • mondo182

Yeah, he’s been confirmed for a few weeks now. Only one left that they need to confirm is Christopher Lee, assuming they don’t recast Saruman.

  • J.

Gimli’s dad is one of the dwarves that accompanies Bilbo (can’t remember which one) so like Legalos and his dad, it wouldn’t be out of the question to have John Rhys-Davies return, though I doubt he would because I remember him saying how much he hated the make up

    • Bob in FL

I believe Gimli was the son of Gloin

  • Marc

Hugo ‘Elrond’ Weaving is back too, n’est-ce-pas? Any word on whether Christopher Lee is appearing in ‘The Hobbit’ films as well?

  • Mr Movie Man

Not like Bloom has anything else going on. . .

    • Dawn

Exactly, they wisely gave him & stick figure the boot from Pirates.

      • Rebekah

I agree that Bloom, unfortunately, doesn’t seem to have much going on in the “Hollywood” sense of things. Though, he did just start a family with Miranda by having a baby. Plus, he also plays the bad guy in the upcoming Three Musketeers movie. And, I’m pretty sure he and Keira said no to being in Pirates 4–not the other way around. Anyway, I am glad to hear that Orlando will reprise his role as Legolas. I think a cameo role makes sense for the character.

      • tipsy

Considering how mediocre and forgettable POTC4 was, Bloom and actors who weren`t invited to return look like winners now. Also, Legolas is his most popular role while Will Turner has many naysayers. But other than shield-surfing and ” A diversion” criticism (which is more Jackson`s fault than anyone else`s), Legolas is well-liked even by geeks who absolutely cannot stand Bloom.

      • Ashley

@ tipsy– um have you read anything lately. according to a lot of websites POTC4 blew all the movies opening at the same time and before out of the water with how much they made opening day. so obviously it didn’t falter so badly. as far as Kiera Knightely and Orlando Bloom being in the 4th instalment they said no and if you watch the end of 3 they pretty much ended all ties with those characters. the POTC isn’t about Will Turner and Elizabeth Swan anyway it’s about Jack Sparrow and his adventures. his asventures went on without them. if they had been in 4 it may only have been to see what happened to the characters ten yrs. later. which watching it recently on USA tv network they actually showed an extra clip with Elizabeth standing on a cliff overlooking the sea with Will’s son watching for him to come home.
