'The Hunger Games' lands its Avox Girl

Lionsgate announced that red-headed newcomer Amber Chaney will play the Avox Girl in the big screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games. In the best-selling dystopian trilogy, Avoxes are Capitol slaves who’ve had their tongues cut out over some perceived act of rebellion. Chaney will play the Avox Girl who attends to Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen before she goes into the arena. In a moment of horror, Katniss recognizes the Avox as a girl whose brutal capture she witnessed back home.

Filming on The Hunger Games, which stars, among many others, Lawrence, Woody Harrelson, Josh Hutcherson, Stanley Tucci and Elizabeth Banks, is currently underway in North Carolina. EW recently revealed an exclusive first look at Lawrence in costume as trilogy heroine Katniss.

I can’t wait to find out who is playing Captial resident #1 and Security Guard #2!!!!!

    • Jon

Speaking of which, have they cast Greasy Sae yet?

    • Cygnus

I concur with your sarcasm. Never seen so much concern over secondary and tertiary characters before, most of whom won’t say a thing, and may in frame for a second. The Avox is a little more involved, but not enough to devote an article to.

      • Wynter

I agree with your assessment of all the attention given to characters who are secondary. I echo the sarcasm by confidently saying that I am pretty sure the Avox girl won’t have too many lines.

      • kate middleton

        LOL. I agree.

      • AB

LOL, well in this case, she literally won’t say a thing!!!

Who will they cast as buttercup?
      a) a very old geriatric cat that is also a great actor because after all in movies and tv old cats always play kittens.
      b) a red or black cat with acting experience and awards nominations because after all color is not important they will dye its hair and acting is more important. Plus it’s impossible to cast a yellow cat that also has acting talent.
      c) a black old cat that became famous not because his acting but its singing but had a 5 minute role in a movie and gary ross liked his acting.
      d) Cate blanchet! She is an oscar winner actress and because of that she can pull off anything. If you don’t think she is the right one watch all of her previous movies. She even played BOB DYLAN!
      e) a yellow mashed-in nose, half of one ear missing, eyes the color of rotting squad.
      f) a squirrel or a dog because there is one thing called makeup and there’s also Hollywood magic.
G)None of the above they will just cut out Buttercup because he is a minor role.

    • Lexie

Lol yeah and I can’t wait to see whose playing Peacekeeper #1 and Peacekeeper #2!!!

  • Kay

Have I missed it, or have they not cast President Snow yet? I know he’s not in the first book a lot, but I’m assuming they will at least have him appear briefly in the first movie to set him up for the second two.

    • Wynter

I wouldn’t be surprised if they kept it a surprise by making the actor uncredited in the first movie.

      • Matt

        Ah, good call!

    • Liz Lemon

I’m still hoping for Kevin Spacey.
They need an actor of some caliber to make the villain believably threatening. If they cast the wrong person, President Snow can easily be seen as cheesy.

  • Kevin

She’s hot… but how old is she? She looks like she’s in her late 30s… isn’t this character supposed to be Katniss’s age?

    • Heather P

No. She’s not a tribute. She was a capitol defectee of an unspecified age. The only real description of her was that she had red hair and porcelin skin.

  • Suua P.

She looks good, maybe not what I had in mind for the Avox girl, but she does look like Jennifer’s age.

    • Liz Lemon

She looks like she’s in her 30s. Jennifer looks older, but not that old.

  • jm

Amber Chaney is pretty much exactly as I pictured…and I doon’t think the role of President Snow has been cast yet but I’m sure we will find out soon, I just can’t wait to see this film!!.

  • Felix

Come on, cast Presisdent Snow already! I want Malcolm McDowell, Frank Langella, Timothy Spall, or Tim Curry.

    • or

Anthony Hopkins! Never thought of Tim Curry – I can see him as Snow now that you mention it.

    • Kay

Tim Curry! I hadn’t though of him, but he would be fantastic!

    • kate middleton

Zeljiko Ivanek, Patrick Stewart or Malcolm McDowell!

      • Heather P

Zeljiko Ivanek would be perfect! He makes a great villian.

    • Julia

I’d say Ivanek, Langella, Curry or McDowell from that list, honestly. They’re all terrific, and I think any of them could do the part justice.

  • el camino

She is nice. She doesn’t have a large part in the books but needs casted. As president Snow my guess is of Steve Buscemi. He is in the upcoming Rampart movie with Woody Harrelson so there film time wouldn’t getin the way of there other stuff.

  • Tessa

What is it with EW’s obsession with Hunger Games? Why is this film being promoted so HEAVILY on here? I’ve tried to read the books but the character names are soooo incredibly silly.

    • Krystal

You gotta get past the names because thats only a shallow surface of the great message the book has.

    • Laura

You stopped reading the books because the character names were silly? Really?
I mean, its fine if you didn’t like them, but what a bizarre reason.

      • Tessa

@ Krystal: I found the character names distracting. Eventually I put the book down and never returned to it. I’m curious:Is there anything in the book that explains WHY the charcater names are so absurd?

      • Kim

@Tessa the reason I kinda’ gathered was that this is in the future, end of the worldy, people had to start a new world…. And Katniss says she was named after onions while her sister after primroses. She later says people in richer districts have “crazier” names like Gloss, Glimmer, Marvel, Cashmere…. And I can actually see some people naming their kids those names now. Once you get over the name thing (I simplified Katniss and called her Kat and Peeta was “pita” like my favorite snack), the books are really good.

    • Allison

Because it’s the biggest thing book-wise and book-to-movie wise since Harry Potter and Twilight. Not based on EW’s opinion, or because of the plots, because they are entirely different – because of book sales. EW has increased its general focus on books in the last year or two, and young adult books are the most interesting becuase of all their crossover(adult) appeal.

      • Liz Lemon

In terms of sales, Hunger Games hasn’t come remotely close to Potter or (sadly) twilight. But it is the series that may possibly fill a fraction of the void that Potter is about to leave. That is, if the film is done right.

    • el camino

My thoughts of the more mythological names was I suppose the author in having a interest in it. And her thinking in the future of like in the past with the freedom of slaves them taking names of presidents in the past. Like George Washington Carver and others having presidents names in it.

    • Katie K

Harry Potter has worse names at times!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • peeta&katniss

tessa- who cares if the names are funny!?!? the books are amazing and if you didnt like them why are you reading this article?

  • RobynbRule

I pictured her a lot younger, with short hair and a more square- or heart-shaped face, but sh’es… okay

  • skatespeet

I thought katniss almost always had a braid in her hair, but I guess that could get in the way of the quiver and cause problems with the arrows (with such long hair)
