'Scream 5' not in Wes Craven's immediate future: 'I'm taking the summer off.' -- EXCLUSIVE

Wes Craven has told EW he has no immediate plans to make Scream 5. Last week, Scream series executive producer Harvey Weinstein informed MTV news that he was “sure” the director would oversee a fifth entry in the meta-slasher franchise. But Craven says that he is in no rush to direct a follow-up to Scream 4, which was released last month. “I’m taking the summer off,” he insists. “I directed and produced, and my wife [Iya Labunka] produced, both Scream 4 and the previous film, My Soul to Take, and they were both very difficult films. So we just decided, ‘You know what? We’re going to spend the summer someplace nice and not think about film for a while.’”

'The Muppets' give 'The Hangover' wolf pack a run for their money in new trailer

Sure, the wolf pack from The Hangover Part II are poised to dominate the holiday weekend box office, but we’d like to see how they’d fare against “the fuzzy pack.” In their latest teaser (they fooled/charmed us all earlier this week with Green With Envy) that riffs directly on The Hangover sequel’s build-up trailer, we’re warned that the “Fuzzy Pack is Backy Back.” Who knows what kind of shenanigans those Muppets got into to find themselves in jail, but we bet Stu, Phil, and Alan couldn’t even handle it.

If The Muppets turns out to be even half as inspired and funny as these trailers, this could turn out to be the single most satisfying movie going experience of the year, no? Watch the trailer after the jump and see if you agree: READ FULL STORY »

Jeff Bridges has officially been cast in R.I.P.D., the upcoming film based on Peter M. Lenkov’s comic book miniseries about a law enforcement agency operated entirely by dead people. (The title stands for “Rest In Peace Department.”) Universal confirmed Bridges’ casting to EW. The Oscar winner will join Ryan Reynolds, who stars in the film as a murdered police officer trying to find out who killed him. Bridges will play Roy, a presumably-crusty elder member of the R.I.P.D. The film is currently slated for a 2012 release, and will be directed by Robert Schwentke (Red, Flight Plan).

George Clooney in Alexander Payne's 'The Descendants': Watch the trailer!

Ever since the Ocean’s franchise wrapped up in 2007, George Clooney has taken a fascinating detour into an onscreen midlife crisis, playing an assortment of apparently perfect Clooney-esque ultra-men suddenly confronted with a weird emptiness in their life. It was true in Michael Clayton, Burn After Reading, Up in the Air, even Fantastic Mr. Fox, and it looks to be true of The Descendants, the December film in which Clooney plays a family man trying to hold his family together after his wife falls into a coma. The setting is Hawaii, but things are hardly idyllic: Clooney’s character, a self-described “back-up parent,” has to deal with his irascible daughters… not to mention the revelation that his wife was having an affair. Hard to believe, but this is the first film Alexander Payne has directed since 2004′s Sideways, so expect laughs mixed with bitter sadness. Also, Robert Forster punches a punk teenager! Watch the trailer after the jump… READ FULL STORY »

Disney backs away from 'SEAL Team 6' trademark

Categories: Movies

The Walt Disney Company has withdrawn its application to trademark the term, “SEAL Team 6,” according to the Wall Street Journal. SEAL Team 6 was the unit that successfully stormed Osama bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan and ultimately killed the terrorist leader. A spokesperson for Disney told the Journal that the company switched course “out of deference to the Navy.”

Box office preview: 'The Hangover Part II' plans to party all Memorial Day weekend

The first Hangover opened at $45 million two years ago. The Hangover Part II, which tells (almost) exactly the same story (and jokes), only this time in Bangkok, could likely open with twice that amount, closer to $100 million, over the Memorial Day weekend. Despite iffy buzz and a controversy over a smoking chimp (was he trained to inhale or not?), the Todd Phillips comedy reuniting Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis will likely be No. 1 at the box office this weekend, which officially starts Thursday, as the Hangover and Kung Fu Panda sequels look to get a jump on holiday weekend moviegoing. Here are our predictions for what to expect for the five-day frame:  READ FULL STORY »

'Pirates of the Caribbean': Why didn't more American moviegoers opt to see Jack Sparrow in 3-D?

Pirates-Carribean

Last weekend, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides earned a staggering $260.4 million overseas — the largest foreign debut ever. Much of its success could be attributed to 3-D screenings, which accounted for 66 percent of the movie’s overseas gross. Some countries particularly embraced the 3-D format; in China and Russia, for instance, 3-D showings represented 85 and 71 percent of the film’s revenue, respectively. But 3-D is still a new and attractive selling point in many foreign markets. In America, the numbers tell a different story. READ FULL STORY »

New 'Smurfs' trailer: Watch the Smurfing Smurfs engage in Smurfy Smurf hijinks here. Smurf.

Categories: Movie Trailers

“Do not be fooled by their cuteness.” “Stop saying ‘Smurf’ for everything!” Are these two quotes from July 29′s 3-D The Smurfs, or reactions to the new trailer? Answer: The former, but, still, at least a third of this screenplay must be made of the word “Smurf,” based on the teaser embedded after the jump. Yet, the little blue guys with a terribly narrow vocabulary are undeniably cute: Watch as they escape the evil Gargamel (Hank Azaria) by transporting themselves into New York City and Neil Patrick Harris’ arms. Bonus draw: There’s a laughing cat. (Maybe that’s just an attraction for me.) READ FULL STORY »

Only yesterday, over at the Music Mix, we pointed out that Mike Fleiss is a man of diverse interests. He oversees the Bachelor and the Bachelorette; he has just co-directed a documentary about Ozzy Osbourne; he plays guitar in his band California Wildebeest; and he produces horror films, including the new, David R. Ellis-directed Shark Night 3D, the trailer for which just hit the Internet.

So, Mr. Fleiss, what exactly is Shark Night 3D about? “It’s about 3D sharks!” enthuses the producer. “Sharks coming at ya, in the theater!” Please do go on. “It’s a really exciting project for me. Jaws is my all-time favorite movie for sure. So it was always a dream of mine to make a shark movie. It’s got a good cast: Katharine McPhee and Sara Paxton and Joel David Moore and Donal Logue. I think it’s going to do well.”

You can check out the trailer for Shark Night 3D — which hits cinemas in September — below.
