Box office preview: 'Transformers: Dark of the Moon' would like your attention, please

Featuring more explosions per minute than a Fourth of July fireworks display, Transformers: Dark of the Moon will dominate the box office this holiday weekend. And while there’s no doubting the Michael Bay extravaganza will post some enormous numbers, will the action film also be able to re-energize moviegoers’ enthusiasm for 3-D? Scavenging for Transformers‘ leftovers will be the romantic comedy Larry Crowne, starring Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts, and the Where-in-the-World-is-Selena-Gomez comedy Monte Carlo. Here are my predictions for the four-day (Friday-to-Monday) weekend: READ FULL STORY »

'Thor' sequel coming 2013, but Kenneth Branagh might not direct

Thor

EW has confirmed that Disney and Marvel Studios are planning to release a sequel to this summer’s hit superhero film Thor on July 26, 2013. That puts the sequel only a couple months behind Iron Man 3, another Marvel film currently slated for a May 3, 2013 release. According to a report in Deadline, Kenneth Branagh will not return to direct Thor 2; Marvel Studios would not comment on Branagh’s participation, or lack thereof, at this time. At the film’s premiere in Los Angeles, however, Branagh was demure when asked about a Thor sequel. “You hear about people saving things for film two or three,” the director told EW. “I don’t understand that at all. I put it all in there if I thought it’d help the film be better. You can think of stuff for two or three later, if you get the chance to do them. But you won’t if one isn’t good enough.”

We can expect to learn more about the Thunder God’s sequel at Comic-Con, but for now, we’ll have to satisfy ourselves by trying to guess the film’s non-numeric sequel title. Thor: Lord of Asgard? Thor: Journey Into Mystery? Thor: Ragnarok?

'The Help' moves up its release date to Aug. 10

It tends to be a healthy sign when a movie bumps up its release date, even by a couple of days, showing confidence in not just the film, but also the audience. That’s just what DreamWorks has done with its much-anticipated adaptation of the best-selling novel The Help, about the lives of black maids serving largely white families in pre-civil rights Mississippi.

Originally set for Friday, Aug. 12, the movie will now come out on Wednesday, Aug. 10, in the hope fans of the Kathryn Stockett book will turn out early and help build momentum through word-of-mouth leading into the weekend, according to a source at DreamWorks.

It stars Easy A‘s Emma Stone as a forward-thinking young journalist who decides to write a book about the lives of black maids, who are at once an integral part of the families employing them while also getting little respect as individuals in the racially divided South. Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis star as two of the maids, while Bryce Dallas Howard co-stars as a callous socialite scandalized by their revelations.

Is Apple's Final Cut Pro X first rate or a big mistake? An Academy Award-winning editor weighs in

Apple released their overhauled professional video-editing system, Final Cut Pro X, to the world last week, and the response on the blogosphere has been especially unkind. “I’m just shocked,” says one. “It’s incredibly bad.” Another calls the program, “A very souped up version of iMovie ’11 but with iMovie’s ability to “Export to FCP” removed.” Current ratings on the Mac App Store have the software sitting with a lackluster 2.5 stars.

People are frustrated that Final Cut Pro X is not fully compatible with Final Cut Pro 7 files, rendering older videos unusable by the new system. Many editors, who have built their entire careers upon older versions of Final Cut Pro, are concerned that they may be forced to adapt to a new Final Cut system that has less functionality. Though Pro X does have a few features that users are excited about — the 64-bit processing, the improved “Preview” function — the good has gotten utterly lost in a sea of enraged bloggers.

So before we picked up our pitchforks and joined the Apple torching mob, we sought some real answers from Kirk Baxter, Academy Award-winning editor of films like The Social Network, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and the upcoming The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Baxter (along with his editing partner Angus Wall) edited each of those films with Final Cut Pro, and he spoke with EW about his take on the new software.  READ FULL STORY »

Francis Ford Coppola bringing horror film 'Twixt' to Comic-Con -- BREAKING

Francis Ford Coppola is making his first return to Comic-Con in nearly two decades with plans to bring scenes and music from his upcoming horror story Twixt to the San Diego gathering.

The writer-director describes the independently made movie as “one part Gothic romance, one part personal film, and one part the kind of horror film that began my career.”

Considering his first film work was on titles such as Dementia 13, The Terror, and The Haunted Palace, it sounds like the eventual maker of The Godfather and Apocalypse Now is veering away from art-house fare like Tetro and Youth Without Youth and more toward the grindhouse.

Brooklyn Decker pregnant with twins -- for 'What to Expect' parenting comedy

Brooklyn Decker has a body to envy, but in the new ensemble comedy What To Expect When You’re Expecting she has a pregnancy to envy too.

The Sports Illustrated swimsuit model and dreamgirl from Adam Sandler’s Just Go With It has signed on to co-star with Jennifer Lopez and Cameron Diaz in the film, which takes its inspiration from the best-selling, non-fiction pregnancy guide. Decker will play Skyler, trophy wife of a much older husband, whose remarkably easy pregnancy — with twins no less — makes the other moms-to-be in her social circle loath her even more.

What To Expect will be directed by Kirk Jones (Waking Ned Devine, Everybody’s Fine) and begins shooting in July. Lionsgate has set a release date for May 11 of next year.

David Hyde Pierce talks 'Wet Hot American Summer' and his new thriller, 'The Perfect Host'

David-Hyde-Pierce

In the 2001 cult classic Wet Hot American Summer, David Hyde Pierce played Henry Newman, a professor of astrophysics — sorry, an associate professor of astrophysics — and probably the only character in the whole movie who didn’t smell of burger. To mark the 10th anniversary of David Wain’s crazed comedy, we spoke to the Frasier star about his rain-sodden days at the fictional Camp Firewood and also asked him about his new thriller, The Perfect Host.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Why did you agree to appear in Wet Hot American Summer?
DAVID HYDE PIERCE: I’ll tell you the two reasons I took it. First, I read the script and I thought it was very funny. But I thought, this is only going to be funny if these guys know how to do it. Then they sent me some footage from their sketch comedy show, from The State, which had exactly the right tone, very much like the Pythons, doing completely demented things absolutely seriously.

Playing Niles on Frasier, you didn’t often get the opportunity to say lines like, “Oh, f— my c—!” Was that also part of the appeal? READ FULL STORY »

It’s going to be a good week for Excedrin. On Wednesday, Transformers: Dark of the Moon blasted off with the year’s largest opening day so far. The $195 million action film, the third in the Michael Bay-directed series, grossed an estimated $37.3 million on Wednesday, including $8 million from midnight showings. (The movie earned an additional $5.5 million from “sneak preview” screenings Tuesday night, which aren’t being counted toward its Wednesday debut) This year’s previous opening-day record holder was Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which plundered $34.9 million its first day. 'Glee' star Cory Monteith talks his big-screen trip to 'Monte Carlo'

Janet Mayer/PR Photos

By the time summer is over, Cory Monteith, who plays nice-guy jock Finn Hudson on Glee, will have wrapped his second concert tour for the Fox series and appeared in two films, Monte Carlo (out July 1) and Glee the 3D Concert Movie (out Aug. 12). In Monte Carlo — a teen comedy starring Selena Gomez, Leighton Meester, and Katie Cassidy — 29-year-old Monteith plays Cassidy’s boyfriend, Owen, and is one of the few males in the flick. “Just how I like it,” he says with a laugh. “Owen is someone I think the Glee audience could relate to.” The actor shot the movie in Europe shortly after he and his fellow Gleeks wrapped their initial concert tour last summer. “I gotta say, I took almost every opportunity I had to disappear and travel,” he says. “I saw 10 countries in a month.” READ FULL STORY »

'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy' teaser trailer: Things might get complicated

Sometimes all a trailer needs to completely win me over is a bunch of serious British actors giving each other some very serious looks. The new international teaser trailer for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy has both in spades. Based on the novel by master spy writer John le Carré, the film brings together a cast filled with enough of the UK’s finest actors to rival a Harry Potter film. Gary Oldman leads a troop that includes Tom Hardy, Colin Firth, Toby Jones, and a thankfully non-purple Mark Strong. Sweden’s Tomas Alfredson of the masterful Let the Right One In directed the film, and it isn’t difficult to see echoes of the same heavy atmosphere. Check out the clip below: READ FULL STORY »
