Emma Stone and Bryce Dallas Howard on 'The Help' and their Gwen Stacy connection

In anticipation of the MTV Movie Awards (this Sunday at 9 p.m. ET), the network has been hosting week of sneak peek screenings in Los Angeles of five upcoming summer films, including the highly anticipated adaptation of the best-selling novel The Help. At the film’s Thursday screening, EW caught up with two of its stars: Emma Stone, who plays Skeeter Phelan, the plucky heroine, who strives to interview African-American maids in 1960s Mississippi; and Bryce Dallas Howard, who plays Hilly Holbrook, the queen bee of her town’s social life who’s also a virulent racist. The young actresses discussed handling material’s ugly bigotry, what it was like to film in the Deep South, and the serendipity that both have taken on the role of Spider-Man love interest Gwen Stacy — Howard in 2007’s Spider-Man 3, and Stone in next summer’s The Amazing Spider-Man. Check out the interview, and the audience’s reaction to The Help, below:

It’s so hard to believe that Emma is a natural blonde because she looks so good as a red head.

    • funny ha ha

Agreed. As soon as I saw this, I said to myself “thank god she is a red head again.” She looks unnatural as anything else.

      • Yaya

        Agree!

Wow, Bryce is really stunning. Unfortunately the only thing I’ve seen her in was Spider3 and that wasn’t a good look. I can’t wait to see this movie and partly because it brings Viola Davis back to the screen where she belongs.

    • ndk

so true, I love Viola Davis, she is a great actress and deserves success

      • Dee Jones

I so agree with you. She is one of the best actresses of today. She is so commanding and compelling when she`s on the screen, no matter what she`s in. I didn`t see `Fences`, but from what I saw from TV clips she was awesome. This might get her a second Oscar nomination!

    • Will

She’s the only reason to see The Village (i mean…if you’re ever forced to watch it). Bryce was fantastic in it.

Hilly Holbrook is supposed to be chubby. While I like Howard, it’s typical Hollywood, giving the part to a skinny girl instead of giving a heavier actress a chance.

    • soccermom66

I read the book and I don’t remember Hilly as being chubby. Minny is chubby and Elizabeth’s young daughter Mae Mobley is chubby, but I don’t think Hilly is supposed to be on the heavy side.

      • Hillary

at the first bridge game, Hilly is described as being plump– unlike her mother who is very thin

      • soccermom66

Thanks, I missed that, I pictured her in my mind as being thin, but now I do remember the passage you described.

      • Trixie

Just wanted to add that at several points in the book, Hilly’s clothing is described as being ill-fitting, and especially tight around the middle, due to Hilly being chubby.

    • jcb1628

I was really disappointed too when I heard who was cast as Hilly. What a missed opportunity! I really hope they don’t glamorize and gloss over other less attractive parts of the book.

      • Cantare

Like how badly it was written?

  • Captain

Wow, Bryce Dallas Howard is just unrecognizable. I’ve seen the trailer 3 times and had NO clue it was her. She’s the kind of person who looks different every time I see her.

  • Captain

As a journalist, this is a prime example of bad journalism. When you’re about to ask someone a question and they’ve already answered it, don’t ask it anyway. The fact that Emma didn’t know Bryce played Gwen Stacy clearly answers that she never gave her advice on the role yet he asked it anyway. BAD JOURNALISM!

    • Dave

      Uhh, ever heard of sarcasm?

    • Will

uh as a journalist yourself, I think you should have picked up on the sarcasm…and then watched the clip a little further, and saw the part where Bryce and Emma talked about it

mybiagail100 on September 25, 2011 did u pay the tax for those each of ur suave products ??????????????could u tell me what suave product these are? whether hair spray or shampoo or body wash???did u buy theses all 3 suave products in a single target shop itself while checkout???didnt they say anything? ?? because 2 free products per person know!! but u bought 3 suave products .how?

    • KCC

      your joking right?

  • Keertana

@Captain Like Dave said, the actresses were being sarcastic. Bryce later tells the story of when she found out Emma was playing Gwen Stacy, she ran into her trailer or something like that and screamed, “You’re Gwen Stacy!” Obviously it must have come up since they were filming this movie when Emma got the Gwen Stacy role so they were just messing around and being sarcastic

  • Alexis

Both Bryce & Emma r the most gorgeous natural redheads eva! Byrce was AMAZING as Victoria in Eclipse & I loved Emma in Easy A. I really wanna c The Help, looks great. Love em both!

    • filmboymichael

Emma Stone is a natural blonde.

  • Beauty

LOVED the book! Can’t wait to see the movie. Viola is going to be incredible as usual, give this lady an Oscar already!!!

  • annie

This book was terrible and I doubt the movie will be any better.

  • MaryKatharine

Oh, Emma Stone, you are adorable and I love you to death…but I’m pretty sure being nice to someone’s face and then talking behind their back a) is not the definition of “southern hospitality” and b) isn’t unique to the south; it’s unique to girls as a whole (not to throw around even more generalizations.)

  • Yaya

When I first saw the film, I couldn’t wait so I read the book. LOVE THE BOOK! I will be seeing this film for sure.

  • DivaSoulSista

I’m a Midwesterner but I feel like a Southern Girl once removed as I live in NC now and spent summers growing up with family in GA and AL. Granted, it’s not the Deep South but I really resent how people on both coast are so condescending about the South, in general. What was it like in the Deep South? Well, what is it like in shallow LA or rude NYC? The question was ridiculous.

  • Mikey M

While watching The Help, I realized the Gwen Stacey connection. It just dawned on me.
Bryce was so hateful in the movie. Great acting.
