'The Vow' trailer: Is this the next 'Notebook'?

Channing Tatum is vying to be the Will Smith of Valentine’s Day. Recall that Smith established himself as one of the biggest box-office stars on the planet with a string of July 4 blockbusters. Now Tatum, who starred in last year’s V-Day hit, Dear John, is back in 2012 with The Vow, playing the spontaneous and loving husband of a woman (Rachel McAdams) who suffers amnesia after a car accident and can’t remember their life together (see an EW First Look photo).

It has all the best elements of the tearjerker genre — eccentric courtship, scenes in the rain, hints of montages capturing severe heartbreak. And then Ben from Felicity (Scott Speedman) shows up, so you know McAdams has a choice to make. Choose wisely, Rachel. And don’t cut your hair. Watch the clip below:

It honestly looks really cute by Channing Tatum cannot act.

    • Nikki

      *sorry meant to say “but”

      • Anna

I was thinking the exact same thing while watching this. I don’t understand how he keeps getting roles.

      • WhitneyD

        Exactly, Nikki!

      • Erin

Agreed. I’m looking forward to this movie but Channing Tatum really turns me off any movie. He’s a sucky actor and IMO not at all attractive. Might have been good looking back in his dance movie days but unfortunately he’s one guy that does not age well. Normally atleast as they get older they hone their craft so it’s absolutely fine (I prefer substance over looks anyway) yet he’s lacking in many departments. Big old block of wood!

    • John

Ms.MacAdams…you are one of Hollywood’s promising young actresses, and sadly, you have been that for the last 10 years, but it seems you are stuck doing turd after turd. When will you finally get your “Black Swan”, your “Shakespeare in Love”, your “The Reader”? You are so friggin’ talented, and you are squandering your gifts in these crappy films. Hasn’t Hollywood offered you any substantial roles???

      • Jonathan F.

Did you just say Kate Winslet’s career was full of turds until The Reader?

      • Woot

Jonathan you took the words right out of my mouth. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind begs to differ with your statement (among others.) Besides McAdams has been in great movies! Midnight in Paris has gotten stellar reviews and is doing great at the box office. Plus she is going to be in Terrence Malik’s next movie! Sure she hasn’t had a “Black Swan” movie yet, but she isn’t doing bad.

      • HD

I want to like Rachel McAdams but I’ve yet to see anything that has convinced me of all this talent you all speak of. Having said that, I believe John was saying that he wished she could nab an Oscar-caliber role. Everyone knows Kate Winslet deserved an Oscar for anything Titanic forward and was more deserving for Revolutinary Road than the Reader.

      • Alee

All the films he mentioned won Oscars for the actresses named. Clearly, he meant that he looks forward to MacAdams finally getting that one really substantial role that will earn her accolades from audiences, critics AND the Academy. She’s been in decent films and in several hits, but let’s not pretend that she hasn’t played baically variations on the same tired character: the sunny, cheerful, gorgeous girl next door. Even in Mean Girl she was just that same character, but with a mean streak. I also want her to broaden her options…I wanna see her playing a troubled, damaged woman, a psychotic alcoholic, a serial killer, a woman with dissociative personality disorder, anything BUT a nice young lady with romance problems…

      • Captain

She’s been in plenty of good movies, that’s not the problem, she’s just never had a role that’s wowed Oscar voters. That said, most actresses careers plummet after they win one so maybe its a good thing she hasn’t won.

@HD, look at her audition for The Notebook on youtube. Then you will understand. This will not be the new Notebook, as Ryan Gosling is talented and Channing Tatum is not.

      • D

In State of Play, she was a go getter reporter, nothing cheerful or romantic about her role. But I agree with previous poster, she needs to try some grittier stuff. Still, I love her!

      • tom

did you all see morning glory — which i think is the best female role of last year that should have gotten her more award attention but alas it’s a comedy and hollywood does nor reward comedies.

    • Semi Erect

I love both of the actors, but this honestly looks like a really worn-out story that’s been told on a million daytime soap operas.

      • kob

Yes,Yes,Yes….The story line was the same as Thai prime time soap operas shown in Thailand. I want to love the Vow but the plot is totally overuse.

    • Josh

Yeah..agree…And it’s really apparent with Rachel McAdams who always comes across as so genuine, vivid and real in her roles.

  • Shane

I can suspend my disbelief for almost any flick but to think for a second that any character – even one with brain damage – can look into Channing Tatum’s perpetually dull, clueless stare and assume he’s a physician is frankly too much to ask of me.

    • Chelsea

I would marry this comment if I could.

    • Matt

      Shane FTW!!

    • Ethan

      GOOD ONE SHANE!

    • m1

That’s kind of offensive, you know.

    • Sour Monkey

      That was so funny!!!!!

  • julie

anyone else wish Tatum and Speedman would change roles? (mad FELICITY fan here – i miss my Ben Covington)

    • maiv

      Yeah…CT can’t really act

    • Ally

I totally agree! I would love to see Speedman in a charming, romantic role, as opposed to playing “the other guy”

      • Erin

Umm, he’s definitely not the other guy in the first two Underworld movies.

      • @Erin

I don’t think that Ally was saying he’s always playing ‘the other guy’. I think she was just saying she didn’t want to see him play ‘the other guy’

    • @barnhillism

YES times a zillion. I will always have a bigger torch for Scott Speedman than any other actor out there. Damn he’s so hot………. and manly……… and stubbly…….. yum.

    • Saracen Riggins

      YESSSSS.

  • uh oh

Channing tatum = new Brad pitt

    • jay

      but Brad can act.

      • JB

I disagree I think Channing is a great actor!

    • Ummmmmm

Channing Tatum: bad actor, not especially attractive, could never land Angelina Jolie. Clue me in to the specific points of this so-called resemblance, please.

    • Javabooknut

Brad wasn’t that good of an actor early on and I think Tatum has really developed some acting chops. Guess I’m a sap but the trailer made me tear up. Can’t wait.

  • Shannon

Why does a film always have to be the next “…” and not stand on its own? So basically, there is no need to pay to see it if I saw the notebook?

  • Meg

Looks more like the next Kate Hudson/Meg Ryan/Katherine Heigl chick flick turd to me…

  • Aaron

There are like 12 lifetime movies with the exact same plot as this movie. I think any screenwriter who uses the amnesia card and isn’t writing Memento should lose his/her WGA card.

    • Lisa Simpson

Not to mention that The Simpsons did it better.

  • KSG

Isn’t this based on a true story?

    • cam3150

Yes, it is. It is really an amazing story of real love and what a marriage should be. I apparently am in the minority when I say that I can’t wait to see this movie!!

      • ST

@cam3150-I completely agree with your comment. Can’t wait to see this movie!

      • Heidi

well if its real then I guess I can’t wish she chooses Scott Speedman. Its funny how that makes me change my mind so quickly. Good for the hubby to work so hard and be so patient to help her fall in love with him all over again.

  • Tammy Spry

I think Nicholas Sparks is such an amazing writer that he can and will shock you with whatever he chooses to do. Amnesia? He will write a moment that completely blow you away, and you will leave the theater in wonderment and awe!!

    • cam3150

This is not based on a NS novel, thougn it does seem that way. The book, “The Vow”, is a true story and was written by the couple themselves, at least according to amazon.

    • soz

I mean this in the least offensive way possible, and you’re totally entitled to enjoy reading whatever books you enjoy reading, hell it’s great people are reading at all, but Nicholas Sparks is not an amazing writer. Seriously. He isn’t. That’s just not true.

      • Ace

This. The Notebook aside, his movies are AWFUL, not to mention unbelievably formulaic. Now that I know this isn’t a Sparks movie, I might see it eventually.

      • @Ace

Yeah, but it still has Channing Tatum. Why oh why did we get Channing Tatum and not someone more like Ryan Gosling?! Oh yeah, because they gave that guy the ‘other guy’ role. Poor Scott Speedman. He’s so much better than Hollywood seems to give him credit for.

  • Thad

no chemistry. Channing is horrible. Rachel is amazing. Hello casting agent….

  • Lola

    Choose Noel!

  • Ethan

HAHA. Wasn’t The Time Traveler’s Wife suppose to be the next Notebook? It turns out that was a dud and The Vow looks even worst. How many cliches can they pile in one movie. Rachel is too good for these sappy love stories. It might work if it had a good male lead but CT is such a bland actor. It sucks that Rachel has to go from Ryan Gosling –> Eric Bana –> Channing Tatum.

I want to watch Rachel in the Terrence Malick’s movie instead. I hope it will come out this year!!

    • samantha

At least she gets to keep Ryan Gosling, for real..lol. They are such a great couple in real life. Eric Bana and Channing Tatem do not even come close to comparing to Ryan Gosling, especially with his performance in The Notebook, He is a wonderful Actor, I wish I could see him in more movies!

      • ST

        @Samantha, Gosling &

      • ST

McAdams aren’t together anymore. She’s with one of the (older) vampires from the Twilight movies, also her costar in Midnight in Paris.

      • MomC

His name is Michael Sheen. He has also played Tony Blair in several projects (The Queen, etc.) and had a great guest arc on 30 Rock.

      • soz

Rachel McAdams is seeing Michael Sheen? Random.

      • hawaiianheart

If you liked him in “The Notebook”, Ryan Gosling in “All Good Things” is even more amazing.

      • oh wow

You do realize you’re like 2 or 3 years late on the uptake? McAdams has dated like 2 or 3 guys since then. I personally think she and Michael Sheen look terrific together, but she has a tendency to fall for costars, and I don’t see that stopping anytime soon.

    • Brit

I’m not sure how much appeal Eric Bana had (or maybe I’m just speaking for myself) compared to a Ryan Gosling. Who the leading man is plays a big part in what girls will watch.

  • Gina

as a reader of ALL Nicolas Sparks books, this seems like a sad attempt to get those fans to see this movie. The trailer seems WAY to formulaic to me….. no chance I would watch!!

    • MomC

Gina – You read Nicholas Sparks books and are complaining about something being way too formulaic?

      • anon

        Zing!

  • MomC

Um, yeah. no contest. Would totally choose Scott Speedman over Channing Tatum – can’t act, barely speaks.

  • deedeedragons

No it’s not the notebook that had people who could act in it.

    • Gaby

You realize it’s the same actress, right?

      • deedeedragons

The word “people” indicates more than one “person”, or i’m i still going too fast for you?
