Eight minutes of 'Green Lantern' hit the Internet: Oh look, a Smoke Monster!

Some comic book movies like to play the mystery-buzz game, keeping their big visuals, plots, and even the actual names of their characters under wraps right up until the release date. And then there’s Green Lantern, which has released trailer after trailer after extended trailer. It’s understandable that Warner Bros. would feel the need to open the floodgates for Lantern: the Ryan Reynolds-starring film is the studio’s first attempt to launch a non-Superman, non-Batman franchise since Catwoman, which we won’t linger on. Moreover, the character has a uniquely complex superhero mythology — and to judge by the the eight minutes of Lantern footage that just hit Cinema Blend, the movie is trying to hit basically everything. So witness footage of Planet Oa, of literally hundreds of Green Lanterns, and of baddie Hector Hammond, who I swear looks even more ridiculous in the comics. (Fans will enjoy the fact that Blake Lively’s call-sign is “Sapphire.”) The most interesting video shows Ryan Reynolds battling against Parallax, a galactic supervillain rendered here as a Lostian accumulation of homicidal black smoke. Check it out:

Film fans, do you like what you’ve seen from Green Lantern? Or have you seen too much? Do you wish they’d held certain details back?

do you know how many trailer we got of spiderman and X-men and every other Marvel hero before the movie came out

    • phin

this is my thought too. Go look at the movie box page for first class. There’s like 22 tv spots, like 15 clips and a bunch of featurettes/brolls. the gl stuff is just getting more hits i guess.

  • Brett

“Lost” didn’t corner the market on Smoke Monsters. Can we please give the “Lost” references a rest?

    • John

No, it’s the Lost Smoke Monster it looks stupid the entire film looks dumb and will be the worst comic book film of the year by far. This film makes Jonah Hex look like Bridge on the River Kwai.

      • Mark

Well if the smoke monster’s appearance is a hint that this is going to be like Lost, I will definately pass. I watched Lost and wished I didn’t so this will save me the trouble.

      • Jay

I think you are wrong!! I am a HUGE Marvel comics from from my younger days and I have been more excited to see Green Lantern than either Thor or X-men this summer. It looks to be the best of the summer

      • Abe Froman

  • INTERNET BULLY

THIS MOVIE IS GOING TO TANK!!! MARK MY WORDS. LANTERN DOESN’T HAVE THE READERSHIP, STYLE OR HISTORY OF SPIDER/SUPER/ OR BATMAN. I LIKE RYAN REYNOLDS, BUT HE DOESN’T HAVE THE CHARISMA TO PULL THIS OFF. HE STUNK IN W:XO AND HE’S NOT AS HUMEROUS AS CHRIS EVERETT WHO I THINK IS GONNA DO WELL AS CAPTAIN AMERICA. GOOD LUCK WB, STICK TO WABBITS. P.S. SHOULD HAVE CHANGED HIS OUTFIT TO YELLOW CUZ YOU HAVE A LEMON ON YOUR HANDS. PETER SAARSGARD? REALLY?

    • Alex

I don’t think it was Reynold’s fault he “stunk” in Wolverine. You can only do so much with what you’re given, and that movie was something of a stinker. To say the least.

      • INTERNET BULLY

        AGREE

    • barney

Isn’t Green Lantern in the top 5 selling comic books?

      • Abe Froman

        Um, not even close.

      • Ryan

        Actually, Abe, it IS.

      • Mark

hahaha it has been for over a year now

    • George

      • INTERNET BULLY

SHOULDN’T THAT READ ‘RYAN REYNOLD’S FATHER’? LAME ASS

    • Matt

His last name is Evans, Chris Evans..idiot. If you’re going to slam something that you haven’t even seen yet then don’t bother saying anything. Oh and is it really necessary to type in all caps? What are you, five?

      • THE INTERNET BULLY

YES I AM 5. AND YA CHICK STILL DIGS ME. YOU STINK OF FUNIONS

    • ALI

  • jets

Green Lantern was one of my favorite superhero’s as a kid. His power is just so cool, as is the costume. But I think by the time this comes out, audiences will be a little bit superhero’d out, and this will underperform. Also, X-men first class set a high standard, if not in money then in quality, which might be tough for GL to measure up to. Also, other than the special effects, it just doesn’t look that good to me.

  • lettergirl

hmmm….i’m a pretty big comic book geek and i’m not so sure about this. i will say if i have to hear him scream, ‘GREEN LANTERN’S…MIGHT!!!’ one more time in the commercials i might have to break something!

    • Amy

You proclaim yourself to be a comic book geek, so shouldn’t you be able to get the Green Lantern quote right? It’s “Green Lantern’s Light” not “Green Lantern’s Might”. I have only seen a few of the trailers and I know that.

  • idviceroy

@Internet Bully – It’s Chris EVANS, not Everett. But as to the nature of the post, as much as I want to see GL do as well as his Marvel counterparts have done so far this summer (Thor, X-men) I’m not so sure that’s going to happen. But the jury is out-it could be an all-out blast.

    • INTERNET BULLY

‘PRECIATE THAT, WAS IN A BIT OF A RUSH. PROBABLY WOULD BE BETTER WITH CHRIS EVERETT…

  • LM

What “Green Lantern” needs is peripheral marketing to get people familiar with the story.

Everyone knew the stories and villains of Batman, Superman, and Spiderman, but Green Lantern is a second tier super hero. Actually, he’s probably more a third tier one in terms of saturation in the super hero world.

This doesn’t mean the film won’t be good, but if the villain, for example, doesn’t have the instant recognition of the Joker or Green Goblin, his relevance won’t be as strong.

The studio should be saturating the internet with comics and the history of this super hero.

    • Joe

The villain is Sinestro. But they made him a hero in this one, the one who trains Green Lantern. So stupid. I remember the original comic, he never trained Green Lantern because he was the villain. The comic people must have changed it during one of their ‘new beginnings.’

      • Ryan

Huh? Sinestro has been the one who trained Hal for like 25 years. It’s totally established that he was a GL before he went bad.

      • Mark

        Hey Ryan,

Go reread Green Lantern, the original comics, from the very first series by Gil Kane, Neal Adams and others. Sinestro wasn’t the one who trained him. He was always a villain. They rewrote Sinestro’s origin to say he trained him.

      • Ryan

Until Emerald Dawn 2, 20 years ago, when they retconned Sinestro as the one who trained Hal (Sorry, I thought that was published closer to Crisis).

Being a former GL (and a hero) has ALWAYS been part of his backstory.

    • Mark

The marketing people are promoting this movie like crazy. They gave Green Lantern rings in special light up cases to people like Taylor Lautner, Matt Damon, Kevin Smith and those guys. So they are promoting the movie, just to the wrong people.

      • Joe

Somebody in WB Marketing looks like they were trying to score brownie points with celebrities, at the expense of Green Lantern fans, because marketing is not making that particular ring available anywhere else.

  • Mcfly

This looks incredibly cheesy. That smoke monster looks more like a large expanding turd. Mr Hankey the Christmas Poo but bigger and scarier.

  • PB

    LM,

That’s a great point, although Green Lantern is definitely a 2nd tier guy. I’m going to cross my fingers and see it, but the problem with GL, like Thor, is the massive amounts of fantasy that is inherent in his story. It takes an good story and credible director to pull of this type of story. Thor had Branagh, who had a deft hand.

Most of the good superhero films have, of course, some level of fantasy involved, but it can steep back to some sort of reality. Batman is just guy with cool toys. Ironman is really the same thing. X-men are genetic mutants of humans, same with Spiderman and on and on. Green Lantern is about aliens and a power based on imagination. So to not humanize the villian is a huge mistake IMO and may well sink the movie. The monster looks fairly ridiculous. They needed a humanoid looking baddy to connect with audiences, especially in an origin story. I know they’re saving Sinestro for #2 but Doc Polaris or even someone like Black Hand would have been much better for a first time out…..Not enough broad appeal. Hope it’s good though. GL is such an underrated Comic book hero….

    • L2read

Or just watch the trailers, the evil villain is a human scientist infected with the yellow power after touching the dead GL. Not to sound rude, but Herp Derp.

  • watchyourheadew

Still promoting a massive attack instead of this movie?

  • Captain

Did anyone watch the Blake Lively clip? WOW! I couldn’t sit through the whole thing, it was too painful. God that girl is a bad actress. Her voice doesn’t change the entire minute. Robo-Blake.

    • wall-e

Well she’s not meant to be singing…

  • T

Uh, I’m a little confused. I thought the Green Lantern was black?!?!

    • Original GLFanboy

Just to make sure you’re clear about this: it’s a common misuderstanding. There are 4 Green Lanterns on Earth, one of them is black. His character, John Stewart, has a cameo in this 1st one and you can count on him getting his ring in a sequel. Buy a ticket & help make sure that happens.

  • mike

Im a huge fan of not only the Green lantern but of Ryan Reynolds as well, and like any comic fan all I can say is taht he wouldve made a better flash than green lantern

    • Thomas

I was sitting around watching old JLU cartoons w/ some friends and we all were imagining who to cast as Flash, and Ryan Reynolds made perfect sense (at least before he gets much older). As for Hal Jordan, I’ve actually thought a buffed up Bradley Cooper or Chris Pine would work well.

  • Tony

That looks awesome. Gonna be the movie of the summer.
