Tom Cruise in 'Rock of Ages' -- FIRST PHOTO

The first look at Tom Cruise as womanizing rocker Stacee Jaxx in Adam Shankman’s big-screen adaptation of the Tony-nominated Broadway musical Rock of Ages has hit the Web on Tom The ’80s are in full effect with a backlit, shirtless Cruise sporting long hair for the character, who, in the stage show, sings Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead or Alive” and is a part of other numbers including “I Wanna Know What Love Is.” See the picture after the jump!

Back in April, Shankman spoke to EW about Cruise’s casting and commitment: “Here’s the thing about Tom Cruise:  I knew in my heart he would never put himself in harm’s way about taking on a part if he didn’t think he could deliver. So it wasn’t until our first go around with his voice lesson that we sort of looked at each other and went, ‘This is gonna work!’ And we were basically dancing around the living room and high-fiving each other because he actually has a fantastic voice,” Shankman said. “His grandfather or his great-grandfather was an opera singer, so apparently he’s genetically predisposed for this sort of thing. He’s having the time of his life and he is so grateful in a strange way that I even thought of him for this, because this is so outside of what he does. He is going to create an incredibly indelible character, because I told him this needs to be so far out there that it’s startling.”

Wow, never thought I’d see Tom looking like that. Pretty awesome. The movie is gonna be incredible.

    • Nellie

If you have a midget-fetish, yep.
But I see he wears _very_ tall shoes.

      • PJ

        Lame Nellie. So lame.

      • Michael

Lame, yes, but only because I find that to be an insult to “midgets”.

      • K

        He’s 5’9″

      • Matt

        @K He’s 5’9″ with his lifts in!

      • Bunnie

        He’s 5’7″ – per

      • BLT

I met Tom Cruise once and there is no way he is even 5’7″…I’m 5’3″ and he wasn’t terribly taller than me. I was shocked but it was still freakin’ Tom Cruise. He was married to Nicole Kidman then, so it was before the crazy came out.

    • Chris

Wow. Those shoes he has on are like high heels lol. Maybe they should have took that pic above the ankle.

    • Michael

This movie looks awesome! I love Tom Cruise!

    • anonymous

He is 48 years old !!!
Is that how old the character is ?

      • anonymous

And Cruise turns 49 in July.

  • Jefito Flores

OMG…this is so outside of how I’m used to seeing him. Looks fantastic!

    • Lily

      x 2!! WOW!

    • Diane

Wow! I didn’t know he could look so hot

    • Patty

Yeah…Tom Cruise seems to go all out with every project he does. You have to hand it to him for that.

      • lifeafterlost

haha exactly what I was thinking best examples:
magnolia as frank tj mackey and
        tropic thunder as les grossman

      • jul

        Yeah…he is surprising sometimes.

  • Missy

This photo is AWESOME! I can’t believe how Tom can just seem to play any character. And S-E-X-Y, girls!

    • Patty

  • Rebecca

    Damn…. Check out those abs!

    • Or then maybe

      Damn…. Check out that Photoshop!

      • Matt

I know that’s right! Maybe the camera could pull back some more… xD

      • or actually

See his body in the recent movie MI4. Your body is a disaster doesn’t mean a man that age can’t have the body Tom Cruise has.

    • Chloe

I believe those abs are his and not photoshopped. I saw a picture of him recently and he was shirtless and those abs are real.

      • Bunnie

liposuction does wonders.. you should see him shirtless in movie Knight and Day… clearly a botched lipo – he obviously had another one to fix that one.

      • Liz Lemon

Agreed. Tom Cruise has always had a rocking bod.

      • Diane

Bunny you’re nuts–Tom has always had an amazing body

      • Ellyas

Lipo? Wow…the Tome Cruise haters are getting really creative these days!

  • Tracey

    Wow. He looks great!

  • tundraaim

this movie is filming so close to where I live, friends and family have driven by the filming, anxious to see it for myself, gotta check it out

  • googie

  • Well…

Tom can do anything! Even play straight! Amazing!

    • Darin

He doesn’t play straight very convincingly. Russel Brand should be playing Stacee Jaxx

      • Well…

That was a touch of snark… I completely agree about Brand.

      • Well…

        Also, I’m super gay!

      • hng

Not sure what the f–k his sexuality has do to with this other than self hating he-she males tend to hate gay males who actually want to work and do their job, acting is the job of playing something other than yourself, example Bill Shanter isn’t really a captain of a star ship, that’s why it is called acting. However flammy gay men hate the idea of people thinking of gay men as people so maybe that is your problem.

TC isn’t a good actor but Brand can’t act period, maybe that is your point you like non acting crap like Brand

      • Rowsy

Why TF does Brand have to be considered for every rocker role? Does this character have mega-douche written all over it? Sorry but Brand is the only comedian i cannot stand and cannot understand.

      • HTC

@Rowsey: Maybe you haven’t seen the play. Stacee Jaxx is a washed-up lead singer with a huge ego who everyone hates — which is why Brand would be perfect for the role.

  • tomm

he had long hair back in late 80’s for some ‘fantasy’ movie, when married to first wife. She wanted him to cut it asap.

And for 80’s rock, singing ‘good’ isn’t necessary so anyone could have played the part.

  • CandaceTX

    ab-tastic. I’m in.

  • harry

  • frankie

ugh……I just “refunded” my lunch on the florr after seeing this sad attempt to appeal to a “younger demographic”.

    • Chloe

Guess you know jacksh&t about the play and now the movie. Read up on it before commenting. It’s about bands from the 80’s – those fans are now in their 40’s – just as Tom is.

      • Tajah

Exactly! Tom looks great, and the music will be fantastic.

      • anonymous

He is 48, no spring chicken.

    • CandaceTX

been waiting all week to use that ‘refunded lunch’ line, have you? Fail.

      • Carol

Thanks for the laugh. You made my day!

  • Amanda

Tomm, the movie you are referring to is “Legend” . It was one of his first movies. I wonder what his “scientolo-coocoo” group think of him playing a womanizing rocker !

    • LoveforPeace

What is the difference between private beliefs and professional choices?

  • Skye Hill

All I see is an idiot scientologist. Won’t be paying a cent to see anything he’s in.

    • Marie

I agree. Not able to watch any of his recent movies after seeing his constant rants against mental health therapy and medications (and anyone who doesn’t support his sci-fi “religion”). When he talks about scientology, he seems almost out of his mind. Can’t stomach him anymore. And BTW, those are definitely not his arm and ab muscles.

      • CandaceTX

any reason why you dopes clicked on this article to comment? Y’know, with ya’ll disliking him so much and all…

      • @Candace

Maybe because it’s our right to express an opinion, whether it’s positive or not?

      • Jade

That’s the same way I feel about Mel Gibson..whenever he talks (rants) about Christianity he seems out of his mind…can’t stomach the man and refuse to watch anything he’s in…now Tom on the other hand I WILL watch in anything!!

  • Captain

Anyone who’s seen Tripic Thunder knows that Tom Cruise can take on almost ANY character. I’m not a fan of his but the guy has talent out the ears.

    • Matt

And if you believe the rumos, he’s got talent up his butt, too. Ask some of his male co-stars about his “demands” in his trailer. xD
