Sometimes all a trailer needs to completely win me over is a bunch of serious British actors giving each other some very serious looks. The new international teaser trailer for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy has both in spades. Based on the novel by master spy writer John le CarrĂ©, the film brings together a cast filled with enough of the UK’s finest actors to rival a Harry Potter film. Gary Oldman leads a troop that includes Tom Hardy, Colin Firth, Toby Jones, and a thankfully non-purple Mark Strong. Sweden’s Tomas Alfredson of the masterful Let the Right One In directed the film, and it isn’t difficult to see echoes of the same heavy atmosphere. Check out the clip below:
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy will be Alfredson’s big crossover into English language film, and it appears he brought what made his last film a success with him. The trailer gives a great sense of quiet suspense. Each beautiful shot pulses with tension with a little help from some of Britain’s best male actors and a creepy soundtrack.
The relatively simple plot is explained with just one line in the trailer and revolves around a Soviet spy in the upper echelons of British Intelligence. Gary Oldman plays George Smiley, who is called out of retirement to find the mole, but I have a feeling that it may get a little more complicated than that along the way.
If nothing else, it will be refreshing to see a good old fashioned spy movie in theaters, but Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy‘s pedigree alone — from Alfredson and le CarrĂ© to the incredible cast — secures its spot as a film to look out for this fall.

11 to Watch in 2011

Contender for best male british cast ever? Surprised that this does not have that much Oscar buzz because it was definitely the best trailer I saw this week.
Come on, Oscar nom for Oldman! Colin Firth looks amazing as well.
I know the novel was published in the mid-70s, but I wish Michael Caine were in the cast–he was my first movie-star crush as Harry Palmer!
this is huge!!!
the cast is great but the music in this trailer made me even more excited.
How could you not mention that SHERLOCK is in this?
No kidding! And looking gorgeous as usual. Oh Benedict.
Feb02wolffbrothermax Dose anyone tcnioe no famous people have complained that Justin Bieber gets a movie made about him, and not them. You don’t see Gerad Way, Milly Cyrus, Kirk Hammett , or any other celb Making you tube videos of themselves acting like brats saying Hey Man I’ve been in the Bizz Longer than Justin Bieber No ones Making a movie about my accomplishments HM I wonder why fans, and haters alike.
That music got me sucked right, this is waiting to be a classic
Maybe some people didn’t realize (not knowing he was in the movie) that was Benedict C.
He’s also in The War Horse and doesn’t exactly look like he does in this clip in that. (from pictures, the first preview he isn’t seen.).
For Sherlock fans..some press people have seen a small part of the new series and one said they wanted it to keep going and we are Not going to be disappointed. “Brilliant”.
Ben belongs up there with the Greats.
Meanwhile
no mention made of the British mini series starring Alec Guinness. It was both the definitive adaptation of Le Carre and the definitive George Smiley. It was as if Le Carre had written Smiley specifically for Sir Alec. The followup mini series Smiley’s People was every bit as good. I doubt very much that this film could ever top either of these.
I agree with you, but I’m willing to give it a chance. And if you’ve read who plays whom in this film, this new version gets even more intriguing. I can hardly wait to see it. At least we have a standard for comparison.
Tom Hardy, this is your career.
Former costars from Stuart, A Life Backward to Mark Strong from RocknRolla.
I’m so happy for this talented actor’s successes.
Been a fan from giddy up.
Having just recently finished reading Tinker, Tailor… I watched the 70′s series starring Sir Alec Guinness and it was very good. I’m not sure how I’ll cope seeing another man play George Smiley… But I’ll watch it with interest nevertheless
Mark Strong not playing the villain for once.
Yeah. I really liked him in Body of Lies, so I was pretty disappointed that he got stuck in villain roles. Let’s hope this shows that he can do something else.
Benedict was a co-star in Stuart, a Life Backwards with Tom Hardy.
It was a such a good thing to work with Ben as he went above what many actors do and you always felt you were free as an actor.
Holy sh*t this looks good! The name’s pretty catchy too haha idk if that helps a movie but I like it.
it needs more Tom Hardy! But this movie looks good. I love movies like this. but put more Tom Hardy in it.
The trailer wasn’t my favorite of the year (that would be the teaser for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo), but I’d say it’s up there. The cast is obviously top-notch, it looks suitably dark and gritty, and the director is apparently quite talented (I haven’t seen Let the Right One In yet, but I really want to). But it was really the music that sealed the deal for me. Please let that be the actual score.
