Box office update: 'Transformers: Dark of the Moon' retains top spot with $14.9 million on Friday

Transformers: Dark of the Moon held on to its prime position at the box office on Friday, blasting up another $14.9 million. That number represents a 55 percent drop from Moon‘s last Friday, which is actually in line with expectations, as effects-driven sequels tend to be very frontloaded at the box office. Transformers should earn a strong $46 million this weekend and lead all other releases by a comfortable margin. That’s not to say that the newcomers fizzled, though — they most certainly did not!

Horrible Bosses started the weekend in second place with a strong $9.9 million on Friday. Compared to other recent R-rated  comedies, Bosses‘ $9.9 million Friday is 27 percent higher than Bridesmaids‘ opening day of $7.8 million, and 19 percent lower than Bad Teacher‘s $12.2 million first day. Bridesmaids ended up earning $26.3 million on opening weekend, while Teacher earned $31.6 million, so Horrible Bosses will probably split that difference and take in about $30 million over the three-day frame.

In third, Zookeeper tamed $7.4 million worth of ticket buyers on Friday—a very solid result. That number is 16 percent better than the opening day gross of last month’s family-friendly animal flick, Mr. Popper’s Penguins, which began with $6.4 million on its way to an $18.4 million weekend. The Kevin James comedy looks to be headed for $22 million by Sunday.

Cars 2 raced into fourth place with another $4.8 million on Friday. The Pixar film should cross the weekend finish line with about $15 million. Bad Teacher rounded out the top five with $3 million, which will likely result in a $9 million weekend.

Check back tomorrow for the full box office report.

1. Transformers: Dark of the Moon — $14.9 mil
2. Horrible Bosses — $9.9 mil
3. Zookeeper — $7.4 mil
4. Cars 2 — $4.8 mil
5. Bad Teacher — $3.0 mil

i am surprise how well horrible bosses is doing. i am gonna watch that movie this afternoon.

    • PN

I think that the marquee names in Horrible Bosses such as Jamie Foxx and Jason Bateman are helping it perform well.

      • hatetch

i just saw this afternoon, was crazy funnier than hangover 2, almost as funny as bridesmaids. loved it!!

      • Feverishkin

I was one of a few people i know who liked, “Hangover 2″ so my opinion might not matter. But, i thought “Horrible Bosses” was effin hilarious. This is turning out to be a great summer for comedies.

    • moviebuff

I went to see Horrible Bosses today, and it was indeed hilarious. I LOVE Jason Bateman – he has such a great wry way of delivering his lines and keeping a straight face during funny scenes. I was sort of wondering though, how on earth Jennifer Aniston read that script and said, ooohh this character is for me! Very sexually charged. She looked beautiful though. I RECOMMEND it!!!

  • Chris

Jennifer Aniston finally has a hit.

    • @Chris

“Marley & Me,” “The Break-Up,” “Along Comes Polly,”Just Go with It,” “Bruce Almighty,”He’s Just Not That Into You,” “The Bounty Hunter,” all hits, and before you remind me that most of those films had bigger male co-stars to whom the film’s success was owed, I should remind you that she was still a bigger part of those films’ marketing than with HB. In any case, HB is still not “a Jennifer Aniston” movie necessarily since her role is a supporting one.

      • Kate

So, Jennifer Aniston is such a huge star, then why do the movies in it with her alone tank? Management made 1 million total, Love Happens opened at 8 million and The Switch opened at 8 million, made 27 million total.
Both Derailed and Rumor Has It flopped. If she’s in an ensemble movie that’s a hit, you can’t tell me that’s because of Jennifer Aniston alone. Her fans are off-the-wall ridiculous. Personally, she’s good in small doses. I would not pay money to see a film just because Jennifer Aniston is in it. She’s no Sandra or Julia, even though she wants you to think that she is.

      • mark in nyc

actually except for Bruce Almighty, all of those films flopped. Go look it up, we will wait. They all lost money.

      • PN

I like Jennifer Aniston as an actress, but she needs to stop doing these same kinds of romantic comedies! It’s the same plot and “oh woe is me, I can’t find a good man at the end of the movie!” script over and over, even with that Gerard Butler movie. Even Carlos Diaz is getting tired of it!

      • Captain

        @PN
I wouldn;t call Horrible Bosses the “same romantic comedy.” Lets wait until her next bad romantic comedy to use that line. Jennifer has made some great movies. She was awesome in The Good Girl but she never gets recognition for that.

      • Ok, right

Marley and Me had an adorable dog and was based on a popular book.
The Break-Up, Bruce Almighty, Just Go With It, and Along Came Polly all had big co-stars who have been able to open movies just by themselves. He’s Not That Into You is an ensemble movie with many other stars based on a popular book. So, the one movie where I think Jen might have had succes was The Bounty Hunter. Oh wait, Gerard Butler was in that and he had a big film with Katherine Heigl, The Ugly Truth, which made more than The Bounty Hunter. Sure, Aniston gets a lot of HYPE and does a lot of SELF-promotion. But underneath all that, she can’t open a film by yourself. Compare her to Reese (Legally Blonde, Sweet Home Alabama, etc). These movies hit well over 100 million with no male co-stars. Or, even bigger, Sandra Bullock, with The Blind Side and The Proposal, both of which made around 250 million and did not have bigger co-stars. Then, you have Julia Roberts, who had hit after hit in the 1990s, easily taking many movies past the 100 million mark. The FACT is Jennifer Aniston has NEVER had one single movie where she was the sole and lead star (with no big male co-star, no cute dog, no books, no ensemble) which went past 100 million. Hasn’t happened yet.

      • hf

Legally Blonde had a cute dog in it, and Luke Wilson, who was popluar at the time. It’s also funny that you put “etc.” after Sweet Home Alabama, since she hasn’t opened a movie by herself since that one. And I would argue that even that one had a well known supporting cast, not to mention, a dog, since that seems to be so important to you. If you check Julia Roberts filmography, you’ll see most of her films have had some pretty heavy duty co-stars, and she’s had her fair share of disappointments as well. I’ll grant you Sandra Bullock had a good year in 2009, but The Blind Side was based on a true story everybody was interested in, and The Proposal had pretty strong supporting cast, including Betty White. All you’ve proven is that if you want to discount the success of a film Jennifer Aniston was in, you can manufacture one. Just as you can with all the actresses you’ve mentioned.

      • Ok, right

hf has no grasp of logic. You are telling me that people went to see Legally Blonde 1 + 2 because of a
dog? Right. Marley and Me had the DOG in the title. The story was about the DOG. It ONLY had the dog on the poster. It was based on the popular book about the DOG. Legally Blonde was about a dumb blonde who becomes a lawyer, not a story about a DOG. And, you can’t compare Aniston to Roberts. Julia has 7 movies pass the 100 million mark on HER NAME alone. Her co-stars in her romantic comedies were never as big as her. That’s why she used to command a 20-25 million salary. Sandra Bullock has had 4 movies pass the 100 million mark on her name alone. That’s why her salary is as big as Julia’s. And, you’re telling me that people went to see The Proposal because of Betty White? Because White is HUGE movie star who opens movies all the time. Right. Most importantly, all three actresses have won Oscars. Aniston commands 10 million per picture. She’s never had a film pass the 100 million mark on her name alone. She’s never been nominated much less won an Oscar. You can try to spin it all you want, but your points are ridiculous and make no sense whatsoever.

      • hf

No, actually I’m not saying any of that. I was applying your “logic” to those same films. But it’s clear that you didn’t understand what I was saying, so no point in debating any further. I have no desire to try to break it down to “see spot run” levels for you. Good day.

      • Jim

“Ok, right” is right. Aniston isn’t a big star by herself. She’s good in small doses, but she doesn’t work as the main draw. And, hf, you think you are clever, but you haven’t proven a thing, other than you sound like a pretentious jackoff.

    • tomm

Jen is not the ‘star’ and also she finally is not playing a ‘lookin for Mr Right’ goody-goody, but a slutty broad.

  • DRG

America continues to eat up crap.

  • chris

horrible bosess was one of the funiiest movies i’ve seen in a longtime, jennifer aniston is hilarious in it

  • Koozebane

      • Ian

Fast Five is the greatest movie ever comment in 3, 2,

      • LOL

I don’t care about Horrible Bosses, or Zookeeper, or any of that crap America loves. Fast Five will always be better. The Oscars should be called the Fast Fives because Fast Five will win all of the Oscars. Forget Potterheads and Twihards, I’m a Fivehard.

    • LOL

I never said Fast Five was the best movie ever. I said that it is arguably the best movie of the last 50 years. But it is undeniably the best movie of the this century. The best movie ever? Don’t be ludicrous.

      • Your Face

        Fast Five is entertaining crap.

      • LOL

I’m going to write a sequel to Fast Five called LOL Is An Idiot. I hope they make it.

      • DRG

And if it is crap America will love it.

      • Pinchy McPunam

Fast Five may be pretty good, but it’s no Free Willy.

      • LOL

Hey guys, we’re still on tonight, right? I’m leaving the door slightly open and taking all comers. You’ll know it’s me—I’ll be ranting about Fast Five.

    • Crap

You love me!! You LOVE me!!!!!!

We got 4 tickets for the Transformers IMAX 3D show tonight. Really excited because so many people have said it was outstanding and way better than the first Transformers movie.

    • Mephysto

You’re someone with special needs aren’t you?

      • Corky

Excuse us, people with special needs know not to go to Transformers. Transformers movies suck balls.

    • bkwrm

Saw it last weekend and it was awesome. I completly agree it was better than the first. I can’t wait to see it again.

  • Drew

Jennifer Aniston gives her best performance in Horrible Bosses. She’s never been funnier and more alluring. I do think many of her most successful movies are her worst, with her playing either bland or irritating characters.

  • Ap

Horrible Bosses was really funny…glad to see others are watching it.

  • D

I don’t know what everyone is talking about, I thought Horrible Bosses was pretty damn underwhelming and awkward until it picked up towards the end. Very hit and miss.

    • shell

      I agree with D.

  • Wicked&Truth

@LOL….man u make me laugh everyday!! …….enjoy it now Transformers….for next week you get potterized b$#ch!!!

Wow. I thought Horrible Bosses would be #1
