'Harry Potter' to debut in a record number of 3-D and IMAX theaters

Now there’s no excuse for Muggles to not see the final Harry Potter movie. Warner Bros. announced Wednesday that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows–Part 2 will debut Friday on more than 11,000 screens at 4,375 locations. Both of those figures are records for the Potter series, and the location count represents the third-widest opening ever, behind only The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and Iron Man 2. Of those 4,375 theaters, more than 3,000 will show Deathly Hallows in 3-D — the biggest 3-D rollout ever. And IMAX will play the film in a record 275 theaters domestically.

The wizarding movie has some other pre-release milestones up its sleeves, too. On Tuesday, Warner Bros. revealed that Deathly Hallows had already accumulated $25 million in advance ticket sales. That number has since grown to more than $32 million — a new pre-opening record. Also, both Fandango and MovieTickets.com are reporting that the picture has already sold a greater number of tickets than any other film released this year, with Fandango adding that more than 5,000 showtimes have sold out so far. In other words, if you haven’t purchased your ticket yet, you better find a Time-Turner pronto.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 opens early Friday morning with midnight screenings at more than 3,800 theaters. The film will be targeting a trio of box-office records: largest midnight debut (currently The Twilight Saga: Eclipse with $30 million), opening day (The Twilight Saga: New Moon with $72.7 million), and opening weekend (The Dark Knight with $158.4 million). Check back with EW.com throughout the weekend for more box-office updates.

I would love HP to break the Twilight records. I tried watching Eclipse the other day on Showtime. It was too painful. Even my sister, who is rather fond of Twilight, fell asleep during it.

    • Who Craig?

Seriously. I’m tired of all the “twilight holds the highest ______” twilight can burn. I got my midnight ticket already can’t wait for tomorrow :)

In the long run, though, HP wins by miles and miles. The film could go up for some serious awards…things Twilight can only dream of.

I would love to see HP break all records, but really I don’t care I am just so, so, so, so excited to see the movie myself!!

  • Avada Kedavra, Twilight

I just want HP to beat Twilight… I’m fine with Dark Knight keeping the opening weekend record.

Agreed. Then at least the top record-holders will actually be worthy of their records.

(gasp) Harry Potter is better than Twilight?! (gasp) When have I ever heard that one before? (sarcasm)

Anyway, yes, I can’t wait to see Harry Potter on Saturday.

Deathly Hallows 2 has already passed 32 million in midnight sales. Down goes that Twilight record.

Does that include 3D surcharges? I’d like to see how it compares to movies that were not released in 3D, like Eclipse and New Moon… Perhaps taking into consideration, maybe HP7 p2 hasn’t really surpassed the Twilight record that everyone seems to despise.

This film better be the year’s highest gross and make a billion dollars. But I’m worried about that since Pirates 4 already made that record.

    • m1

I don’t know if it will be the highest grossing film of the year, since the last two were outgrossed by Transformers 2 (yikes) and Toy Story 3 respectively. But we can only hope.

I am so excited to see this – I have my ticket for tomorrow. Thankfully, I found the only 2D screen in Toronto. I’ve committed a lot of years to this franchise… I am not ending it in crappy 3D.
