Martin Scorsese’s reputation as a tough-guy gangster-movie director has always been reductive — he’s made a musical, several documentaries, historical epics that specifically star Leonardo DiCaprio, and movies about Christ and the Dalai Lama — but his next film looks to be his biggest departure yet from form. Hugo is the tale of a boy whose father gives him a wind-up figure that looks like a steampunk-bot, with a heart-shaped keyhole in its chest. (If you instantly thought of Kingdom Hearts, then you’re a nerd, and also marry me.) Dad dies, and Hugo embarks on some adventures in a train station with Chloe Moretz (trying out an English accent) and Ben Kingsley. Also, Sacha Baron Cohen keeps chasing him, and this whole thing is in 3-D. (Hugo is based on The Invention of Hugo Cabret, but the name was presumably shortened because “Invention” is a very difficult word for the all-important kindergarten demographic to spell.) Martin Scorsese to film ‘Hugo Cabret’ in 3-D

This is one of my all-time favorite kid’s books (and I’ve read a lot, as I teach 4th grade). I am so excited to see this movie.
Poor choice of music. Makes the movie look so cheesy!
I must disagree. Peter Gabriel’s cover of Arcade Fire’s “My Body Is A Cage” is fantastic, and adds to the mood.
??? I can’t actually watch this on my work computer but I watched the U.S. trailer last night at home. Is this a DIFFERENT trailer than the U.S. version? Because the one I saw had “Kings and Queens” by 30 Seconds to Mars playing over it and it was as bad as can be expected from a 30 Seconds to Mars song. “My Body Is A Cage” I love!
I agree, Kevin. I hate that 30 Seconds to Mars song.
For fun!
Looking forward to it as well. Great book.
From what I understand, the issue was marketing executives determining that American audiences thought “Hugo Cabret” was too French.
Looks good.
Just got so excited to see this! Chloe’s one of my favorite actresses, and after “Kick-Ass,” “Let Me In,” then the upcoming edgy “Hick” it’s nice to see her do a family flick. Looks like it could be a potential classic!
The music was a little out-of-place, and I’m not hugely fond of the uber-slapstick look of the conductor, but otherwise this looks pretty interesting. LOVE Chloe Moretz, and my daughter adored this book. We’ll definitely be there opening weekend.
I am SO looking forward to this. We read the book in one of my children’s lit classes. Nothing can beat the magic of the book, but this looks like a fun time for sure!
It’s nice for Chloe Moretz to be in a movie she can see, and is that the boy from “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas”? Sacha Barenboim Cohen looks slightly out of place. And this is weird for Martin Scorsese. It looks like a typical kiddie movie but I think it’s getting some serious Oscar talk. Probably just because Scorsese’s attached.
Wow, I can’t believe Scorsese is doing this. The trailer had some really nice moments, mostly the parts with Asa Butterfield and Chloe Moretz, and I’m hoping for a movie that captures the innocence and optimism of childhood a la Super 8, except obviously more whimsical and fantastical. The main thing that I’m skeptical about is Sasha Baron Cohen as a, I suppose, villain (it’s kind of hard to tell). I wonder if, even if it’s good, it might be too weird to garner much Oscar attention.
I prefer it when Scorsese departs from the usual as I often end up offended at some point watching his usual. I just realized that I read this book last year. I don’t remember much about the story but the drawings were great.
A new Scorsese film is always a good thing.
Ironically, and sadly, this will be Scorceses biggest financial hit by a long ways
hey it’s that kid from The Boy In The Striped PJs :O
