Just in time for preview night at Comic-Con, the first official trailer for next year’s Amazing Spider-Man reboot has hit the internet. The film marks a somewhat risky attempt to restart the Spider-Man franchise by refocusing on Peter Parker’s high school years (which were quickly left behind in the Sam Raimi-Tobey Maguire trilogy). To judge by the trailer, the tone of Amazing is darker than the earlier trilogy — moody music plays over David Fincher-y shots of Andrew Garfield walking down the halls of school, clearly not too popular despite the fact that he stole Pauly D’s hair. The video actually opens with footage of Peter’s parents — who have a somewhat confusing history in the comic book world that I won’t get into, since that appears to be spoiler territory — leaving him with his Aunt and Uncle, never to return. Since Spidey is already kind of a weepy character — Uncle Ben, no! — it’s interesting to see that they’re doubling down on the misery by focusing so heavily on the fact that Peter is apparently an orphan. Check out the trailer and see for yourself:
There are plenty of clear differences between Amazing and the earlier Spider-Men. Mary Jane is nowhere to be found; instead, you’ve got Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy, who’s working in a lab for some reason. (The teaser doesn’t reveal the villain, but if you’re interested, EW revealed the baddie’s identity in our Comic-Con issue.) But my first impression of the trailer is that it actually looks strikingly similar to the Spider-Man we saw almost 10 years ago — spider-bite, experimenting with his powers, good ol’ Uncle Ben just sitting around waiting to get killed to teach his nephew a lesson, ridiculously attractive girl who instantly likes Peter Parker for some reason.
That being said, there’s an interesting implication when Dr. Connors asks Peter, “Do you have any idea what you really are?” And if the film really does go as darkly emotional as the trailer seems, Amazing could be a legitimately interesting take on the superhero. (Put it this way: This film’s version of “darkness” probably doesn’t entail crooning in a jazz club with emo hair.) What do you think of the trailer, Spider-Man fans? Is that last shot an eye-catching treat that proves modern technology has caught up to web-swinging, or does it just look like a videogame?

‘Spider-Man’ sequel already in the works

Where’s Firestar and Iceman?
that is a fantastic comment
Spiderman is not Batman – he is not moody/dark. Some suit in LA saw Batman and thought “wow, this is making lots of money, lets reboot spiderman and make him dark/brooding” This trailer is generically “dark” which is the buzzword since 2005 with Batman Begins. This Spiderman will fail
Its become the same process as naming a Chinese restaurant – take the words “dark”, “brooding”, “gritty”, “3-D” toss them in a bag and pull out the words.
stop your weeping. spiderman can be dark. go back to your fanta.
love!!!
that is an AMAZING comment.
Spider-Man And His Amazing Friends – one of the great Saturday morning cartoon shows.
I wish firestar and Iceman were there!! That would be so hot!!
and cold.
HAHAHA, this looks like a video game. They better improve the special effects ASAP.
That whole end is like a video game. Cheesy CGI to the max
Well keep in mind the movie comes out next year. I highly doubt the finished product will look like that. I’m stoked about this. It looks like its going to be “Amazing”!
That’s what we thought about Green Lantern haha
NO Nathan. NNNNNnnno. YOU are the ONLY one that thought Green Lantern would be amazing.
If they’re using it in a trailer, it’s considered “done.” I don’t know where the idea that they put unfinished footage into trailers came from, but it’s not right and should stop being thrown around.
actually as someone who has worked in this industry for a number of years i can guarantee you that sometimes they do put unfinished footage in trailers, just like sometimes they put moments in a trailer that end up on the cutting room floor. it happens. now true that might very well be the end product but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t happen.
Really? How often has a trailer come out with footage not featured in the final cut? And who’s to say they can’t spend the next year or so polishing up the fx? God help us if the movie police forbid them from doing so.
Err. That rhetorical question is in response to Thin, not Untapttalent (who is making the same point at the same time >.> )
Video games look way more realistic than that
no they don’t
Umm they really don’t…it was pretty close to photorealism.
I hope Spidey unlocks all the achievements.
That’s a great comment!!
What was the name of the video game that did first person Parkor? It caused people to vomit from disorientation….. sadly so will that preview.
Mirror’s Edge. And the “vomit” crap is just internet rumor spun by geeks who think they know everything. If you can play an FPS like Halo, you can play Mirror’s Edge without any motion sickness. Blair Witch was WAY worse for that.
Yeah, didn’t like the POV sequence either. Hopefully they don’t use that in the final film…
I’m disappointed they’re doing the origin again. It hasn’t been long enough since SM1 for it to be needed.
Garfield looks like a much better Parker than Tobey did and Gwen looks perfect.
Agreed – kinda bummed that it’s an origin again, but I’m excited about the tone of the film, and the actors – they all look like great picks, especially his aunt and uncle. It’s always bothered me that the movies (and comics, to some extent) didn’t really establish the relationship that Peter would have to his aunt (in the Raimi version there was zero chemistry/connection imo) , but it looks like there’s going to be some thought put into those relationships this time around. And I don’t get why other writers (besides the Ultimate line) didn’t mine any mystery out of the death of Peter’s parents, so kudos for Webb doing it here. I just realized his last name is WEBB!
Please Rosemary Harris gave those movies gravitas with her performance!
Please. The Ultimate line is a far cry from the golden age of Spider-man. The problem in the late 80′s to mid-90′s was that so many creative talents wanted to get their hands on the winning feature that s-man was that too many unfinished development and hasty storylines started getting pumped out. Thus we led to the ‘arc’ era of comics, just before bendis became the ‘god’ of marvel. I’m not denying his talents, but don’t say he’s the only one to mine that mystery. Creative design was a lot more restricted ‘back in the day.’ Once he owned DD, there was no turning back.
Yup. Did not want another origin. This looks like a cross between Batman Begins and Twilight… only more boring than either of those.
Ugh, what I thought. Basically they’re trying to do an “edgy” take on it by going all Batman Begins, but it looks terrible. Poor Andrew and Emma.
Batman Begins boring?!? Go watch Transformers again you young ADD fool. Shiny and things go boom. You should like.
Wow you did NOT just call Batman Begins boring. Opinion voided//
Andy Garfield and Emma Stone do look pretty good as Peter and Gwen. No mention of MJ at all? They should have her as a background character at least.
Not a big fan of them re-doing the origin story all over again in detail. Ho-hum. The first person perspective looks pretty neat. Kind of liking the new costume as well.
Wanted at least a glimpse of the Lizard though.
Kinda’ got motion sick from the first person perspective.
Yeah, I wonder how woozy that’s gonna make audiences in 3D!
Raimi’s Spiderman suxxed because it was trying to ripoff Tim Burton’s Batman. He even tried to cast a quirky lead much like Burton did when he casted Keaton (a comedian) to play Batman. However, Maquire not only did NOT look the part but he was annoying as hell. Garfield, on the other hand, has that nerd power thing downpat (like he did in “Social Network”) and the film’s director is the real thing… unlike Raimi who is a corporate wannabe tool. Raimi needs to stick to Evil Dead which is the only thing he ever did well. I have a lot of hope for this. Sure, it’s ripping off the other Batman movie (The Dark Knight) but at least Nolan’s film figured out that the best superhero movies look better when reality and versimilutude is incorporated. This film looks like it takes place in the real world. And it looks like the real thing. Can’t wait.
obvious troll is obvious
And weak.
The Usual Suspects was awesome though…i like sam raimi and no one can deny how good SM 2 was, i mean, those scenes with DOC OC were incredible! that said this one looks cool too. Comic book writers always seem to change the mythology behind characters so i’m interested in this take on the Spidey legend
Wait, how did The Usual Suspects get pulled into this?
It definetly looks A LOT like a movie I saw less than 10 years ago and whose latest sequel which came out less than 4 years ago.
Also that thing about being grittier, darker, blah blah blah is becoming really old and as much as a cilche as saying “reboot” or “3D”.
Hollywood, please stop it already, come up with something new, take a risk!
That being said, Andrew Garfield seems to have been a good choice and the last part with the 1st person view looks OK, hopefully it turns out better than the 1st person view part in that movie Doom.
This looks like what i used to wipe my butt with last night.
Ha!
I liked the trailer, but really, an origin story again? Not sure how I like the first person camera of spidey. hopefully that doesnt happen the whole movie! overall grade for a trailer B+. REally good, not great though.
A solid C+ for the trailer, this did not make me want to see it at all.
I seem to remember the 1970s Spider-Man movie using first person camera techniques. Being similar to that version is not a good thing…
I actually like Andrew Garfield better as Spider-man than Tobey Maguire. Hopefully, this movie is good.
In reference to Kirsten’s MJ, we’re using “ridiculously attractive” loosely, right?
Gwen might be in a lab because she’s a science major. Just saying.
Leave the dark stuff to Batman. If anything, the Raimi films weren’t light enough. Spidey should be a lovable wiseacre. Ditch the emo teenage angst. (However, I do like the web shooters and apparent emphasis on wall-crawling, as opposed to web-swinging.)
He had dark storylines in the comics, but yes, Peter himself needs to be a wise-cracking jokester in the face of all the darkness. As long as that’s in this movie to balance out the more serious tone, I’ll be happy. Peter is NOT a weepy hero; he’s actually an eternal optimist and Spider-man is his source of confidence and stress relief, so I hope they get that right this time. As much as his heroism makes his life hard, he does enjoy being Spider-man. I hope that’s the way Webb and Garfield play it.
Really hope him scribbling in class is him actually doing something that relates to Spider-man, rather than just typical teenage angst. It should be him playing up his Parker appearance to do his superheroing.
All in all, this looks pretty cool, as long as they incorporate his humor. Didn’t need to see the origin again, but I get that they have to reestablish the rules since his powers are different.
Not only does the end of the trailer look like a video game, it specifically looks like Mirror’s Edge, which isn’t such a bad thing if you ask me, the Two Headed Sex Beast.
Looks like his parents are on the run, still alive & will reappear if there are sequels.
boring…
very, the Lizard will have to be very very cool to make up for the rest of this.
