Comic-Con 2011: Robert Rodriguez on 'Sin City 2,' 'Machete' sequels (one in space!) -- VIDEO

And you thought you were busy. Robert Rodriguez stopped by EW’s VIP Comic-Con lounge to talk about a few (or many) of his upcoming projects: Sin City 2, two Machete sequels, a Heavy Metal remake, and a Fire and Ice adaptation. Phew.

But you read right — on Thursday night, Rodriguez announced he would be planning a Sin City sequel. And the director tells EW that the film will focus in part on the A Dame to Kill For storyline, which would involve characters played by Clive Owen and Mickey Rourke in the first film. Rodriguez hopes the two stars will be back — along with big names for two more storylines he plans to create for the film. Who is he hoping will jump on board? Rodriguez is keeping mum at this point, but it depends on scheduling: “Availability is going to be key,” he says.

Also on tap is a third Machete film to follow the already-written sequel to the 2010 Danny Trejo film. And Machete 3 hopes to defy gravity. Rodriguez says he sees the third film taking place in space, and plans to air a trailer for the third film ahead of Machete 2. “It’s very Moonraker,” he says.

Bringing things back to planet Earth, Rodriguez also says he has interest from “some really famous filmmakers” to collaborate on a reboot of the 1981 movie Heavy Metal, and plans to begin shooting a Fire and Ice adaptation next year. But first he has to see the Aug. 19 release of Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4D. Should the Machete and Sin City follow-ups pan out, Rodriguez would then be the force behind three franchises. “I guess I’d have to do Sin City, part 3,” Rodriguez says, adding that one of his inspirations was Star Wars director and Indiana Jones producer George Lucas. “If you create a good story that has a lot of story value … I think audiences like that. It’s why they stick with the same TV show over and over.”

—He’s all insecurity now. And he lost his mistress (McGowan) anyways. Hope it was worth it Robert.

  • Rodriguez is paying this price for cheating on wife

It’s sad to see a once good filmmaker fall apart because of his personal indiscretions (cheating on his wife) as these hairbrained badly conceived film projects illustrate. He’s all insecurity now. And he lost his mistress (McGowan) anyways. Hope it was worth it Robert.

Machete was a joyless exploitation movie, staler than a two-day old taco plate. It featured some of the worst acting that any of the cast has done. They can only improve with sequels. Rodriguez has been promising Sin City sequels for a while now, he might never make them.

Did he not direct all 3 Mariachi movies? That would make him the force behind 4 franchises, wouldn’t it?

Machete was a love-it-or-hate-it kinda film. I liked it…and the reviews were pretty good, @Drew…a lot of that acting was on purpose…it was fun and cheesey and pretty awesome.

Bad acting on “purpose,” while speaking bad dialogue didn’t = entertainment in Machete. It was cheesy alright, and lazy. It had the gore of Planet Terror, and ineptitude of Desperado.

oh yeh, Machete had deliberate stunted acting. It is all part of the GrindHouse style of film. A style I tend to really enjoy. Cheesy, over the top, and wooty poo silliness. I am a big fan of Roberts, I love the spy kids series, and can’t wait to see his new projects. I don’t know about the validity of the accusations about a failed marriage, and all, I do know that in any failed marriage there is two sides to the story, and I don’t thinks its fair to say because he had a fling with a star that now he has ruined his career. Most Hollywood marriages fail for the simple reason that you spend months at a time away from home living in trailers on set, surrounded by hot people. Hey wait how do I get into all this… lol

@max. Machete is a poor homage to grindhous films. “Cheesey” and “over the top” movies from Troma are entertaining, Hobo with a Shotgun is entertaining, this was just pathetic. It was bogged down in bad speeches about immigration that sucked any fun out of it and had a Mexican “hero” that looked lethargic next to the overweight Steven Seagal. Rodriguez’s own Planet Terror was so much better.

Instead of coming up with all of these crazy new ideas, maybe Rodriguez could focus on making one good film that was reasonably coherent?

Focus on Sin City 2!!! Ive been waiting for years!! I thought they were stalled because Frank Miller wanted to do another book in series about Nancy exacting her revenge for Hartigans death which was supposed to coincide with the release of the movie. They dont need to storyboard or write a script since they just followed the books like the first time so wtf is the hold up?? Machete 3 concept is hilarious and would love to see that AFTER Sin City 2…i love grindhouse films and how he’s bring them to a new generation …im waching Four Rooms right now!!
