Comic-Con 2011: 'The Amazing Spider-Man' cast on gritty reboot, Dr. Lizard, and cheeseburgers

After appearing on EW’s cover, Andrew Garfield — and the cast of The Amazing Spider-Man — slung his web into EW’s VIP Comic-Con lounge to chat about the gritty reboot of the series set for theaters on July 3, 2012. Why reboot a franchise that saw its last film (Spider-Man 3) released as recent as 2007? “[Spider-Man is] one of the most cinematic characters in the comics universe,” director Marc Webb told EW’s Jess Cagle during their sit-down, which also included Emma Stone, who will play Gwen Stacy, and Rhys Ifans, set to portray Dr. Curt Connors (otherwise known as The Lizard). And Garfield, for one, has a strong passion for the comics character: “It meant so much to me,” he told EW about being a part of The Amazing Spider-Man. Click the jump to listen to Stone describe her character (who, she jokes, “because of my sincerely limited range is a little sassy and sarcastic), Webb discuss why he cast Garfield in the role (surprisingly, it has to do with a cheeseburger), and Dr. Lizard talk dirty.

Andrew is an amazingly engaging actor but not so sure about him as Peter Parker.

cringe… worst interviewer ever. Some people should stick to print media. Can’t Dave Karger do all the interviews?

  • K

I want to be Emma Stone.

    • Amanda

I know right? I have a total girl-crush on Emma Stone. She can do no wrong.

      • Liz Lemon

I still don’t get her yet. She does nothing for me.

  • Wha’ever

I love Emma Stone. I smile whenever I hear her talk !

  • DavidJ

Wow, I was worried Garfield might be too old for the part, but he couldn’t look or sound or act any MORE like a teenager.

  • guest

    he’s a little up his own @ss.

Every dang one of the EW interviews have been awkward and worthless. Game of Thrones interview was the worst!! Everyone looked so uncomfortable, bored and awkward- then the interviewer asks one or two questions that’s it..over!! No depth at all! It’s been a lose-lose all day. I get nothing and the talent looks bad. I say punt this format! EW was NOT the place to go for great cast interviews. I’m going to look elsewhere tomorrow.

My problem has been with the interviewers. Tim Stack is the worst. He’s a decent writer, but is too giggly and tends to talk over the guests a lot. He really needs to focus his questions or better yet, not do any interviews. Sandra Gonzales has been the best and then Adam Varys, as they both have been professional and make the piece all about the guests. Jmo.

Andrew is missing his press tours with Jesse Eisenberg.

  • J

I am so in love with Emma Stone

  • Alex

Gwen Stacy dies…. in the comic.

    Snapped her neck.

    • dan

there are many versions where she lives, but ya it is her death that initially drives mj and parker together

      • Alex

I don’t know why they didn’t bring her back in the book. They brought Harry Osborn back. They destroyed any shred of excitement the book once had. They should of just went ahead and did it.

        Weird.

  • jared

They need to not take themselves so seriously. I love Garfield and Stone but this Spiderman is absolutely pointless.

    • danny

You are pointless. Andrew is an awesome actor and this movie is going to rock. Tobey Maguire is a freaking dork and the last movie was horrible!

      • The Amazing Spider-Man isn’t pointless .

The point is that if Sony doesn’t produce a Spider-Man movie within a certain timeframe the rights for the studio’s cash cow will revert back to Marvel.

  • Woot

    I have a girl crush on Emma Stone… and I’m a guy!

  • Dudester

something seems different about Stone. as if she lost a lot of weight

  • mellie

    emma has a weird face

  • G

I could listen to Andrew Garfield talk all day…….
